Extreme spin squeezing from deep reinforcement learning

Abstract

Spin squeezing (SS) is a recognized resource for realizing measurement precision beyond the standard quantum limit $\ensuremath{\propto}1/\sqrt{N}$. The rudimentary one-axis twisting (OAT) interaction can facilitate SS and has been realized in diverse experiments, but it cannot achieve extreme SS for precision at the Heisenberg limit $\ensuremath{\propto}1/N$. Aided by deep reinforcement learning (DRL), we discover size-independent universal rules for realizing nearly extreme SS with a OAT interaction using merely a handful of rotation pulses. More specifically, only six pairs of pulses are required for up to ${10}^{4}$ particles, while the time taken to reach extreme SS remains on the same order of the optimal OAT squeezing time, which makes our scheme viable for experiments that reported OAT squeezing. This Rapid Communication highlights the potential of DRL for controlled quantum dynamics.

Spin Squeezing through Collective Spin-Spin Interactions

Yanzhen Wang, Xuanchen Zhang, Yong‐Chun Liu

Spin squeezing provides crucial quantum resource for quantum metrology and quantum information science. Here we propose that one axis-twisted (OAT) spin squeezing can be generated from free evolution under a general coupled-spin model with collective spin-spin interactions. We further propose pulse schemes to recover squeezing from parameter imperfections, and reach the extreme squeezing with Heisenberg-limited measurement precision scaling as $1/N$ for $N$ particles. This work provides a feasible method for generating extreme spin squeezing.

Efficient and robust entanglement generation with deep reinforcement learning for quantum metrology

Yuxiang Qiu, Min Zhuang, Jiahao Huang +1 more

Abstract Quantum metrology exploits quantum resources and strategies to improve measurement precision of unknown parameters. One crucial issue is how to prepare a quantum entangled state suitable for high-precision measurement beyond the standard quantum limit. Here, we propose a scheme to optimize the state preparation pulse sequence to accelerate the one-axis twisting dynamics for entanglement generation with the aid of deep reinforcement learning (DRL). We consider the pulse train as a sequence of π /2 pulses along one axis or two orthogonal axes, and the operation is determined by maximizing the quantum Fisher information using DRL. Within a limited evolution time, the ultimate precision bounds of the prepared entangled states follow the Heisenberg-limited scalings. These states can also be used as the input states for Ramsey interferometry and the final measurement precisions still follow the Heisenberg-limited scalings. While the pulse train along only one axis is more simple and efficient, the scheme using pulse sequence along two orthogonal axes show better robustness against atom number difference between simulation and experiment. Our protocol with DRL is efficient and easy to be implemented in state-of-the-art experiments.

Beyond one-axis twisting: Simultaneous spin-momentum squeezing

John Drew Wilson, Simon B. Jäger, J. Reilly +3 more

The creation and manipulation of quantum entanglement is central to improving precision measurements. A principal method of generating entanglement for use in atom interferometry is the process of spin squeezing whereupon the states become more sensitive to $\text{SU}(2)$ rotations. One possibility to generate this entanglement is provided by one-axis twisting (OAT), where a many-particle entangled state of one degree of freedom is generated by a nonlinear Hamiltonian. We introduce a method which goes beyond OAT to create squeezing and entanglement across two distinct degrees of freedom. We present our work in the specific physical context of a system consisting of collective atomic energy levels and discrete collective momentum states, but also consider other possible realizations. Our system uses a nonlinear Hamiltonian to generate dynamics in $\text{SU}(4)$, thereby creating the opportunity for dynamics not possible in typical $\text{SU}(2)$ one-axis twisting. This leads to three axes undergoing twisting due to the two degrees of freedom and their entanglement, with the resulting potential for a more rich context of quantum entanglement. The states prepared in this system are potentially more versatile for use in multiparameter or auxiliary measurement schemes than those prepared by standard spin squeezing.

Persistent atomic spin squeezing at the Heisenberg limit

Ling-Na Wu, Meng Khoon Tey, Li You

Two well-known mechanisms, one-axis twisting (OAT) and two-axis countertwisting (TACT), generate spin-squeezed states dynamically. The latter provides better spin squeezing (SS) but has not been demonstrated as the form of its interaction does not occur naturally in known physical systems. Several proposals for realizing effective TACT transformed from OAT require stringent experimental conditions in order to overcome the resulting nonstationary (oscillating) SS and continuously varying mean spin directions. This work presents a simple scheme that solves both problems by freezing SS at an optimal point and realizing effectively persistent SS by inhibiting further squeezing dynamics. Explicit procedures are outlined for persistent SS of the TACT limit. Protocols based on our scheme favorably relax experimental demands, which significantly brighten the prospects for realizing TACT.

Dynamic synthesis of Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing

Long‐Gang Huang, Feng Chen, Xinwei Li +3 more

Abstract Spin squeezing is a key resource in quantum metrology, allowing improvements of measurement signal-to-noise ratio. Its generation is a challenging task because the experimental realization of the required squeezing interaction remains difficult. Here, we propose a generic scheme to synthesize spin squeezing in non-squeezing systems. By using periodical rotation pulses, the original non-squeezing interaction can be transformed into squeezing interaction, with significantly enhanced interaction strength. The sign of the interaction coefficient is also flippable, facilitating time-reversal readout protocol for nonlinear interferometers. The generated spin squeezing is capable of achieving the Heisenberg limit with measurement precision ∝ 1/N for N particles and its robustness to noises of pulse areas and separations has been verified as well. This work offers a path to extending the scope of Heisenberg-limited quantum precision measurements in non-squeezing systems.

Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing in coupled spin systems

Long‐Gang Huang, Xuanchen Zhang, Yanzhen Wang +3 more

Spin squeezing plays a crucial role in quantum metrology and quantum information science. Its generation is the prerequisite for further applications but still faces an enormous challenge since the existing physical systems rarely contain the required squeezing interactions. Here we propose a universal scheme to generate spin squeezing in coupled spin models with collective spin-spin interactions, which commonly exist in various systems. Our scheme can transform the coupled spin interactions into squeezing interactions and reach the extreme squeezing with Heisenberg-limited measurement precision scaling as $1/N$ for $N$ particles. Only constant and continuous driving fields are required, which is a requirement that is accessible to a series of current realistic experiments. This work greatly enriches the variety of systems that can generate the Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing, with broad applications in quantum precision measurement.
