Abstract

Spin squeezing plays a crucial role in quantum metrology and quantum information science. Its generation is the prerequisite for further applications but still faces an enormous challenge since the existing physical systems rarely contain the required squeezing interactions. Here we propose a universal scheme to generate spin squeezing in coupled spin models with collective spin-spin interactions, which commonly exist in various systems. Our scheme can transform the coupled spin interactions into squeezing interactions and reach the extreme squeezing with Heisenberg-limited measurement precision scaling as $1/N$ for $N$ particles. Only constant and continuous driving fields are required, which is a requirement that is accessible to a series of current realistic experiments. This work greatly enriches the variety of systems that can generate the Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing, with broad applications in quantum precision measurement.

Spin Squeezing through Collective Spin-Spin Interactions

Yanzhen Wang, Xuanchen Zhang, Yong‐Chun Liu

Spin squeezing provides crucial quantum resource for quantum metrology and quantum information science. Here we propose that one axis-twisted (OAT) spin squeezing can be generated from free evolution under a general coupled-spin model with collective spin-spin interactions. We further propose pulse schemes to recover squeezing from parameter imperfections, and reach the extreme squeezing with Heisenberg-limited measurement precision scaling as $1/N$ for $N$ particles. This work provides a feasible method for generating extreme spin squeezing.

Spin squeezing with arbitrary quadratic collective-spin interactions

Z. Hu, Qixian Li, Xuanchen Zhang +3 more

Spin squeezing is vitally important in quantum metrology and quantum information science. The noise reduction resulting from spin squeezing can surpass the standard quantum limit and even reach the Heisenberg limit (HL) in some special circumstances. However, systems that can reach the HL are very limited. Here, we study the spin squeezing in atomic systems with a generic form of the quadratic collective-spin interaction, which can be described by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. We find that the squeezing properties are determined by the initial states and the anisotropic parameters. Moreover, we propose a pulse rotation scheme to transform the model into a two-axis twisting model with Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing. Our study paves the way for reaching HL in a broad variety of systems.

Generating Stable Spin Squeezing by Squeezed-Reservoir Engineering

Si‐Yuan Bai, Jun‐Hong An

As a genuine many-body entanglement, spin squeezing (SS) can be used to realize the highly precise measurement beyond the limit constrained by classical physics. Its generation has attracted much attention recently. It was reported that N two-level systems (TLSs) located near a one-dimensional waveguide can generate SS by using the mediation effect of the waveguide. However, a coherent driving on each TLS is used to stabilize the SS, which raises a high requirement for experiments. We here propose a scheme to generate stable SS resorting to neither the spin-spin coupling nor the coherent driving on the TLSs. Incorporating the mediation role of the common waveguide and the technique of squeezed-reservoir engineering, our scheme exhibits the advantages over previous ones in the scaling relation of the SS parameter with the number of the TLSs. The long-range correlation feature of the generated SS along the waveguide in our scheme may endow it with certain superiority in quantum sensing, e.g., improving the sensing efficiency of spatially unidentified weak magnetic fields.

Heisenberg-Limited Spin Squeezing via Bosonic Parametric Driving

Peter Groszkowski, Hoi-Kwan Lau, Catherine Leroux +2 more

Spin-spin interactions generated by a detuned cavity are a standard mechanism for generating highly entangled spin squeezed states. We show here how introducing a weak detuned parametric (two-photon) drive on the cavity provides a powerful means for controlling the form of the induced interactions. Without a drive, the induced interactions cannot generate Heisenberg-limited spin squeezing, but a weak optimized drive gives rise to an ideal two-axis twist interaction and Heisenberg-limited squeezing. Parametric driving is also advantageous in regimes limited by dissipation, and enables an alternate adiabatic scheme which can prepare optimally squeezed, Dicke-like states. Our scheme is compatible with a number of platforms, including solid-state systems where spin ensembles are coupled to superconducting quantum circuits or mechanical modes.

Analysis of spin-squeezing generation in cavity-coupled atomic ensembles with continuous measurements

Andrea Caprotti, Matteo Barbiero, Marco G. Tarallo +2 more

Abstract We analyze the generation of spin-squeezed states via coupling of three-level atoms to an optical cavity and continuous quantum measurement of the transmitted cavity field in order to monitor the evolution of the atomic ensemble. Using analytical treatment and microscopic simulations of the dynamics, we show that one can achieve significant spin squeezing, favorably scaling with the number of atoms N. However, contrary to some previous literature, we clarify that it is not possible to obtain Heisenberg scaling without the continuous feedback that is proposed in optimal approaches. In fact, in the adiabatic cavity removal approximation and large N limit, we find the scaling behavior N − 2 / 3 for spin squeezing and N − 1 / 3 for the corresponding protocol duration. These results can be obtained only by considering the curvature of the Bloch sphere, since linearizing the collective spin operators tangentially to its equator yields inaccurate predictions. With full simulations, we characterize how spin-squeezing generation depends on the system parameters and departs from the bad cavity regime, by gradually mixing with cavity-filling dynamics until metrological advantage is lost. Finally, we discuss the relevance of this spin-squeezing protocol to state-of-the-art optical clocks.

Two-axis spin squeezing of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates via continuous driving

Wen Huang, Yan‐Lei Zhang, Chang‐Ling Zou +2 more

In two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian leads to spin squeezing with a limitation that scales with the number of atoms as ${N}^{\ensuremath{-}2/3}$. We propose a scheme to transform the one-axis twisting Hamiltonian into a two-axis twisting Hamiltonian, resulting in enhanced spin squeezing proportional to ${N}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ approaching the Heisenberg limit. Instead of pulse sequences, only one continuous driving field is required to realize such a transformation, thus the scheme is promising for experimental realization of a two-axis twisting Hamiltonian. Quantum information processing and quantum metrology may benefit from this method in the future.
