Abstract

We study the evolution of a collisionally inhomogeneous matter wave in a spatial gradient of the interaction strength. Starting with a Bose-Einstein condensate with weak repulsive interactions in quasi-one-dimensional geometry, we monitor the evolution of a matter wave that simultaneously extends into spatial regions with attractive and repulsive interactions. We observe the formation and the decay of solitonlike density peaks, counterpropagating self-interfering wave packets, and the creation of cascades of solitons. The matter-wave dynamics is well reproduced in numerical simulations based on the nonpolynomial Schrödinger equation with three-body loss, allowing us to better understand the underlying behavior based on a wavelet transformation. Our analysis provides new understanding of collapse processes for solitons, and opens interesting connections to other nonlinear instabilities.

Collisionally inhomogeneous Bose–Einstein condensates with binary and three-body interactions in a bichromatic optical lattice

Sudharsan Balasubramanian, R Radha, P Muruganandam

We study the impact of collisionally inhomogeneous binary and three body interaction on Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of a dilute gas in a bichromatic optical lattice. We observe that the localized matter wave density which decreases after the introduction of repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction can be sustained by the addition of constant attractive binary strength in equal amounts. If the balance between repulsive spatially inhomogeneous binary interaction and constant attractive interaction is disturbed, the condensates collapse. Reversal of sign of interaction ensures the longevity of BECs. Any imbalance between attractive spatially inhomogeneous interaction and constant repulsive interaction either results in the collapse of BECs or in the occupation of the condensates at multiple sites on either sides. The introduction of a weak three body interaction in phase with the binary interaction increases the extent of instability of BECs. Reversing the sign of spatially inhomogeneous and constant interaction enhances the stability of BECs.

Dynamics of bright matter-wave solitons in a Bose–Einstein condensate with inhomogeneous scattering length

F. Kh. Abdullaev, A. Gammal, Lauro Tomio

We investigate dynamical effects of a bright soliton in Bose–Einstein condensed (BEC) systems with local and smooth space variations of the two-body atomic scattering length. It includes a discussion about the possible observation of a new type of standing nonlinear atomic matter wave in cigar-type traps. A rich dynamics is observed in the interaction between the soliton and an inhomogeneity. By considering an analytical time-dependent variational approach and also full numerical simulation of one-dimensional and three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equations, we study processes such as trapping, reflection and transmission of the bright matter soliton due to the impurity. We also derive conditions for the collapse of the bright solitary wave, considering a quasi-one-dimensional BEC with attractive local inhomogeneity.

Incoherent Matter-Wave Solitons and Pairing Instability in an Attractively Interacting Bose-Einstein Condensate

Hrvoje Buljan, Moti Segev, Amichay Vardi

The dynamics of matter-wave solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) is considerably affected by the presence of a thermal cloud and the dynamical depletion of the condensate. Our numerical results, based on the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, demonstrate the collapse of the attractively interacting BEC via collisional emission of atom pairs into the thermal cloud, which splits the (quasi-one-dimensional) BEC soliton into two partially coherent solitonic structures of opposite momenta. These incoherent matter waves are analogous to optical random-phase solitons.

Formation of matter-wave soliton trains by modulational instability

Randall G. Hulet, Jason Nguyen, De Luo

Solitons are localized wave packets whose dispersion is compensated by a nonlinearity. Solitons are observed in many wave settings including optics, fluids, plasmas, and matter-waves. Bright matter-wave solitons were first created by quenching the interactions in a quasi-one dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) from repulsive to attractive. Under some conditions a train of up to 10 solitons was formed. Neighboring solitons were observed to repel one another, an effect that was attributed to an alternating π-0-π phase distribution. There has been a theoretical debate whether this phase structure is inherent to the formation of the train, or if it evolves through a series of mergers and annihilations between neighboring solitons that are in-phase, and hence attractive. This paper shows that the interaction quench initiates a modulation instability (MI) in which weak perturbations undergo a nonlinear amplification, resulting in their exponential growth. Results show that the number of solitons is consistent with the initial size of the condensate divided by 2πξ. Furthermore, once formed, there are few solitons lost to merger or annihilation collisions. From this, we conclude that the soliton train is created with an alternating phase structure, rather than evolving into one.

Localized nonlinear matter waves in a Bose–Einstein condensate with spatially inhomogeneous two- and three-body interactions

Deng‐Shan Wang, Xiang‐Gui Li

We investigate the profiles and stability of the localized nonlinear matter waves in a Bose–Einstein condensate with spatially inhomogeneous two- and three-body interactions in various external potentials both analytically and numerically. Several families of localized stationary solutions of the one-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation with cubic–quintic nonlinearities are obtained by similarity transformation. It is shown that the whole Bose–Einstein condensate can have an infinite number of localized nonlinear matter waves determined by certain non-negative integers. The linear and dynamical stabilities of the localized stationary solutions are studied numerically, and some stable localized nonlinear matter waves are found. We demonstrate that the attractive inhomogeneous two- and three-body interactions support linearly and dynamically stable localized nonlinear matter waves, but attractive two-body interaction along with repulsive three-body interaction destroys the linear stability. Moreover, an anharmonic potential is proposed to stabilize the localized nonlinear matter waves in the Bose–Einstein condensate with spatially inhomogeneous interactions.
