Enhancing SPDC brightness using elliptical pump shapes

Abstract

We report on the use of elliptical pump spatial modes to increase the observed brightness of spontaneous parametric downconversion in critically phase-matched crystals. Simulations qualitatively predict this improvement, which depends on the eccentricity and orientation of the pump ellipse. We experimentally confirm a factor of two improvement in brightness when compared to the traditional circular-symmetric pump spatial modes. These results support previous theoretical work that proposes the use of elliptical pump modes to enhance the performance of parametric processes in anisotropic materials.

Enhanced entanglement from Ince-Gaussian pump beams in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Baghdasar Baghdasaryan, S. Fritzsche

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) has been a reliable process for the generation of entangled photon pairs. In this process, a nonlinear quadratic crystal is pumped by a laser field in order to convert (high-energy) photons into correlated photon pairs whose efficient control plays an essential role in various applications of quantum information processing. In particular, the amount of entanglement has been successfully controlled by adjusting the spatial structure of the incident pump field. Here, we theoretically analyze how the entanglement of the down-converted two-photon state can be further enhanced by using Ince-Gaussian beams with well-defined ellipticity $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$, i.e., solutions of the paraxial wave equation in elliptical coordinates. These spatially structured beams are quite universal as they include both the Laguerre-Gaussian beams for $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ as well as the Hermite-Gaussian beams for $\ensuremath{\epsilon}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$. We demonstrate that the entanglement of the generated photon pairs in SPDC can be maximized by a proper choice of $\ensuremath{\epsilon}$ and that such an enhanced entanglement can be observed experimentally in terms of the Schmidt number.

Optimizing the coupling efficiency of spontaneous parametric down-conversion photon pairs into single-mode fibers

Nicolas Schwaller, Geobae Park, Ryo Okamoto +1 more

Both correlated-mode coupling efficiency and photon pair flux (brightness) of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) coupled into single-mode fibers are key parameters for various quantum information science applications. We present an experimental investigation on the optimization of the correlated-mode coupling efficiency and the brightness of frequency-degenerated SPDC photon pairs into single-mode optical fibers. Using photon pairs generated from a type-I phase-matched bulk $\ensuremath{\beta}$-barium borate crystal pumped by a continuous-wave laser, we carefully evaluated both the correlated-mode coupling efficiency and the brightness of SPDC light coupled to a single-mode optical fiber, while continuously changing the focusing of the pump and collection modes, experimenting with Rayleigh lengths from 3 to 280 (for the pump) and 0.2 to 20 (for the collection) times the crystal length. The measured data suggest that the correlated-mode coupling efficiency can be close to unity for any pump focus, however, the optimal Rayleigh length of the collection mode depends on the pump focus parameter, and the brightness can be increased by tightening the pump focus, provided that the Rayleigh length of the collection mode is precisely adjusted. A maximal correlated-mode coupling efficiency of $99.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.3%$ was experimentally achieved. These results will be useful for photonic quantum science and technology using SPDC sources with high heralding efficiencies.

Theory of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion

Yasser Jerónimo-Moreno, S. Rodriguez-Benavides, Alfred B. U’Ren

In this paper we study photon pairs generated in a nonlinear cavity composed of a nonlinear crystal surrounded by mirrors, by the process of spotaneous parametric downconversion. We analyze two different regimes: singly-resonant cavities where the signal and idler modes are resonant and doubly-resonant cavities where the pump mode is also resonant. We present analytic expressions for the joint spectral amplitude in these two cases and study the reduction in emission bandwidth as the cavity coefficient finesse is increased. We also study the enhancement of the source brightness from the presence of the cavity.

Optimal focusing conditions for bright spontaneous parametric down-conversion sources

Lorenzo Coccia, Alberto Santamato, Giuseppe Vallone +1 more

Optimizing the brightness of a spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) source is an important task for many quantum information applications. We investigate the optimal focusing conditions to maximize the number of photons produced in an SPDC process and coupled with single-mode fibers. We provide a general expression for the two-photon wave function, generalizing previous known results, by considering collinear and noncollinear emission. We present analytical expressions for our results in the thin-crystal limit and clarify the relation between different focusing conditions already existing in the literature. Differently from what was previously reported, we show that the optimal ratio between the pump waist and the generated photons waist depends on the emission angle: It is $1/\sqrt{2}$ for collinear degenerate emission and approaches $1/2$ for larger collection angles. The role of spectral filters is also analyzed. We support and enrich our discussion with numerical simulations, performed for type-I SPDC in a $\ensuremath{\beta}$ barium borate crystal. For this type of emission, we also investigate the role of the transverse walk-off outside the thin-crystal regime.

Control of the shape of the spatial mode function of photons generated in noncollinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Gabriel Molina‐Terriza, Stefano Minardi, Yana Deyanova +3 more

We show experimentally how the spatial shape of the pump beam controls the ellipticity of the spatial mode function in noncollinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The degree of ellipticity depends on the pump beam width, especially for highly focused beams. We introduce an effective length, the so-called noncollinear length, that determines the importance of the ellipticity of the spatial mode function. We also discuss the ellipticity induced by the spectrum of the pump beam.

Mode-selective nonlinear interference for high-brightness and high-purity fiber-coupled SPDC sources

Carlos Sevilla-Gutiérrez, Purujit Singh Chauhan, Varun Raj Kaipalath +1 more

Single-mode-fiber-coupled spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) sources are a key resource for photonic quantum technologies, but in single-crystal geometries brightness, heralding efficiency, and spectral purity remain constrained by intrinsic trade-offs. Here, we show how nonlinear interference in a cascaded two-crystal type-II SPDC source can be used to engineer the modal structure of SPDC emission, improving the brightness--heralding-efficiency trade-off by more than one order of magnitude beyond the single-crystal limit. We further demonstrate two routes to near-unity spectral purity while retaining high brightness and/or heralding efficiency, even with standard periodically poled crystals, and study the additional advantages of aperiodic poling with Gaussian phase matching. Using a spectrally resolved Laguerre--Gauss modal decomposition, we show that these improvements arise from mode-selective interference of spatial-spectral SPDC modes within the nonlinear interferometer. We experimentally validate the model through sum-frequency-generation measurements of the spatial-spectral state.
