Abstract

We show experimentally how the spatial shape of the pump beam controls the ellipticity of the spatial mode function in noncollinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The degree of ellipticity depends on the pump beam width, especially for highly focused beams. We introduce an effective length, the so-called noncollinear length, that determines the importance of the ellipticity of the spatial mode function. We also discuss the ellipticity induced by the spectrum of the pump beam.

Shaping the Waveform of Entangled Photons

We demonstrate experimentally tunable control of the joint spectrum, i.e., waveform and degree of frequency correlations, of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion. This control is mediated by the spatial shape of the pump beam in type-I noncollinear configurations.

Spatial control of spontaneous parametric down-conversion photon pairs through the use of apertured Bessel-Gauss pump beams

Dalia Gutiérrez-López, Mónica Maldonado-Terrón, Raul Josue Hernandez +5 more

We demonstrate, both experimentally and theoretically, a method that allows us to modify the spatial properties of photon pairs produced by the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) with an apertured, zeroth-order Bessel-Gauss beam. Concentrating on the use of a half-plane aperture, we show that the phase-matching conditions for non-paraxial pump beams can be controlled by simply changing the aperture orientation. Partially blocking the pump beam, leads to a selection of either one of two individual cones that form a dual-cone SPDC angular spectrum, or a portion of both of them. We can likewise determine the shape and orientation of the conditional angular spectrum. This control of the SPDC spatial properties could be useful for quantum information processing protocols.

Spatial-to-spectral mapping in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Silvia Carrasco, Juan P. Torres, Lluís Torner +3 more

We put forward an approach for manipulating the spectral profile of entangled photon pairs. Such spectral properties are mediated by the geometry of noncollinear spontaneous parametric down-conversion and by selecting the appropriate spatial profile of the pump laser radiation. We show that one can translate spatial features imprinted in the pump beam into desired spectral profiles of the generated entangled-photon state. Particular configurations suitable for generating entangled pairs with ultranarrow spectral width and with multiple-peaked spectra are demonstrated.

On the control of the momentum distribution of paired photons generated by non-collinear type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Omar Calderón-Losada, Alejandra Valencia

We present a theoretical and experimental characterization of the joint spatial distribution of paired photons generated via non-collinear type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Specifically, for the photons created parallel and perpendicular to the optical table, we determine the shape of such distributions and the degree of correlation of these photons. The characterization is done for different sizes of the pump beam waist. We found that it is possible to have different spatial distributions of the photons with the same degree of correlation.

Transverse spatial entanglement in parametric down-conversion

Stephen Patrick Walborn, Carlos Henrique Monken

It is known that the entanglement present in the transverse spatial properties of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion depends explicitly on the characteristics of the pump laser beam. Here we show that, for pump beams described by a Hermite-Gaussian mode, the entanglement depends on the beam width as well as the order of the beam. The amount of entanglement generally increases with the order of the beam and is less dependent on the beam width for higher orders. We propose a method to measure the spatial entanglement directly, independent of the dimension of the subsystems.
