Abstract

In this invited talk, I discuss four important contributions of E.C.G. Sudarshan, among many. They are the V-A theory of weak interaction, Sudarshan - Glauber representation, tachyons and the quantum zeno effect.

The Legacy of George Sudarshan

Giuseppe Marmo, Saverio Pascazio

George Sudarshan was an eclectic thinker, and one of the most profound physicists of the last century. We review here a small part of his oeuvre, focusing on his pioneering contributions to the quantum Zeno effect, quantum channels (the Kraus–Sudarshan representation) and quantum semigroups (the Gorini–Kossakowski–Lindblad–Sudarshan equation). These topics are of crucial importance in the booming field of quantum mechanics and applications.

Remembering George Sudarshan

Alberto Ibort, Giuseppe Marmo

In these brief notes we want to render homage to the memory of E.C.G. Sudarshan, adding it to the many contributions devoted to preserve his memory from a personal point of view.

E.C.G. Sudarshan: The Vedantin Physicist

Dinithi Garusinghe

ECG Sudarshan passed away on Monday, May 16, 2018 at the age of 86 in Texas, USA. He was the most brilliant theoretical physicist of Indian origin of the century. His research spanned a wide range of topics like Particle Physics, Quantum Optics, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Information Theory, Gauge Theories and Classical Mechanics and in each of them he could make unique contributions. He has been credited with numerous important inventions in the field of Theoretical Physics including Optical Coherence, Sudarshan-Glauber Representation, V-A Theory, Tachyons, Quantum Zeno Effect, Open Quantum System, Spin-statistics Theorem, Non-invariance Groups, Positive Maps of Density Matrices, Quantum Computation etc. His contributions include also on subjects like Orientalia, cultural studies, philosophy and religion. This is a brief account of his life and works in remembrance.

Superluminal waves and objects: An up-dated overview of the relevant experiments

Erasmo Recami

After a brief theoretical introduction (based on the standard postulates of Special Relativity, and therefore extending it --or rather non-restricting it-- without any violations: in particular without any violations of the so-called Einstein causality), the main aim of this article is an updated presentation of the status-of-the-art of the superluminal experiments. In particular, we devote such an article to the phenomena met in tunneling through quantum (and classical) barriers [e.g., referring to the Genelalized Hartman Effect]; and in connection with the Localized (nondiffracting) Solutions of the wave equations [e.g., of Maxwell equations]: especially of the X-shaped ones. The interested reader is provided with an extended Bibliography. This paper was written as a homage to E.C.G. Sudarshan, in connection with his pioneering work on the so-called tachyons. Actually, E.C.George Sudarshan, besides the originator of the V-A theory for weak-forces, of quantum optics --the quantum representation of coherent light--, of dynamical maps for open quantum systems, of the Zeno effect, etc., was a pioneer, in the sisties, also of the theory of Tachyons.

George Sudarshan and Quantum Dynamics

Kavan Kishore Modi

These are my recollections of working with George Sudarshan from 2002 to 2008 when I was a PhD student in his group. During these years I learnt a lot of physics and also was a witness to some remarkable occurrences.

A homage to E.C.G.Sudarshan: Superluminal objects and waves (An updated overview of the relevant experiments)

Erasmo Recami

This writing has been prepared on the occasion of the 75th birthday of E.C.George Sudarshan, who (besides the originator of the V-A theory for weak-forces, of quantum optics --the quantum representation of coherent light--, of dynamical maps for open quantum systems, of the Zeno effect, etc.) was a pioneer, already in the sisties, also of the theory of the so-called "tachyons". This paper wishes to be a homage to E.C.G.Sudarshan, in connection with the last-mentioned pioneering work of his. After a brief theoretical introduction (based on the standard postulates of Special Relativity, and therefore extending it --or rather non-restricting it-- without any violations: for example, without any violations of the so-called Einstein causality), the main aim of this article is an updated presentation of the status-of-the-art of the "superluminal" experiments. In particular, we devote such a review to the phenomena met in tunneling through quantum (and classical) barriers [e.g., referring to the Genelalized Hartman Effect]; and in connection with the "Localized (nondiffracting) Solutions" of the wave equantions [e.g., of Maxwell equations]: especially of the "X-shaped" ones. The interested reader is provided with an extended Bibliography.
