Abstract

Squeezed states of light have received renewed attention due to their applicability to quantum-enhanced sensing. To take full advantage of their reduced noise properties to enhance atomic-based sensors, it is necessary to generate narrowband near or on atomic resonance single-mode squeezed states of light. We have previously generated bright two-mode squeezed states of light, or twin beams, that can be tuned to resonance with the D1 line of Rb87 with a non-degenerate four-wave-mixing process in a double-lambda configuration in a Rb85 vapor cell. Here, we report on the use of feedforward to transfer the amplitude quantum correlations present in the twin beams to a single beam for the generation of single-mode amplitude squeezed light. With this technique, we obtain a single-mode squeezed state with −2.9±0.1 dB of squeezing when tuned off resonance and −2.0±0.1 dB when tuned on resonance with the D1 F=2 to F′=2 transition of Rb87.

Generation of Narrowband 87Rb Resonant Squeezed Light with Four-Wave Mixing

Saesun Kim, Alberto M. Marino

We generate narrowband squeezed light resonant with the D1 F = 2 → F′ = 2 transition of 87Rb with four-wave mixing in 85Rb. Two-mode and single-mode resonant squeezing is generated with levels of −6.3 dB and −2.1 dB, respectively.

A Compact Source for Quantum Image Processing with Four-wave Mixing in Rubidium-85

Ulrich Vogl, Ryan T. Glasser, Paul D. Lett

We have built a compact light source for bright squeezed twin-beams at 795\,nm based on four-wave-mixing in atomic $^{85}$Rb vapor. With a total optical power of 400\,mW derived from a free running diode laser and a tapered amplifier to pump the four-wave-mixing process, we achieve 2.1\,dB intensity difference squeezing of the twin beams below the standard quantum limit, without accounting for losses. Squeezed twin beams generated by the type of source presented here could be used as reference for the precise calibration of photodetectors. Transferring the quantum correlations from the light to atoms in order to generate correlated atom beams is another interesting prospect. In this work we investigate the dispersion that is generated by the employed four-wave-mixing process with respect to bandwidth and dependence on probe detuning. We are currently using this squeezed light source to test the transfer of spatial information and quantum correlations through media of anomalous dispersion.

Near-resonant twin-beam generation from degenerate four-wave mixing in hot 133Cs vapor enabled by field-dressed energy levels

Dan Wang, Weiqing Lu, Jingya Han +5 more

Squeezed light near an atomic resonance is beneficial for efficient atom-light quantum interfaces. It is desirable but challenging to directly generate in atoms due to excess noise from spontaneous emission and reabsorption. Here, we report on the use of energy-level modulation to actively control atomic coherence and interference in degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) and then to enhance the DFWM gain process for the generation of near-resonant squeezed twin beams. With this technique, we obtain a −2.6 dB intensity-difference squeezing detuned 100 MHz from the D1 F = 4 to F’ = 4 transition of 133Cs.

Compact fiber-coupled narrowband two-mode squeezed light source

Umang Jain, Jae Woong Choi, Christopher Hull +1 more

Quantum correlated states of light, such as squeezed states, are a fundamental resource for the development of quantum technologies, as they are needed for applications in quantum metrology, quantum computation, and quantum communications. It is thus critical to develop compact, efficient, and robust sources to generate such states. Here, we report on a compact, narrowband, fiber-coupled source of two-mode squeezed states of light at 795 nm based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in an 85Rb atomic vapor. The source is designed in a small modular form factor, with two input fiber-coupled beams, the seed and pump beams required for the FWM, and two output fibers, one for each of the modes of the squeezed state. The system is optimized for low pump power (135 mW) to achieve a maximum intensity-difference squeezing of 4.4 dB after the output of fibers at an analysis frequency of 1 MHz. The narrowband nature of the source makes it ideal for atomic-based quantum sensing and quantum networking configurations that rely on atomic quantum memories. Such a source paves the way for a versatile and portable platform for applications in quantum information science.

Strong Relative-Intensity Squeezing of Light from Four-Wave Mixing in Hot Rb Vapor

Paul D. Lett, Vincent Boyer, Alberto M. Marino +2 more

We use nondegenerate four-wave mixing in hot atomic vapor to generate up to −7.1dB of relative-intensity squeezing between the probe and conjugate beams. This narrowband, multispatial-mode, squeezed light near an atomic resonance is of interest for image processing as well as experiments involving atomic ensembles.
