Abstract

This work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental study of quantum states of light conditionally prepared by subtraction of a random number of photons from the initial multimode thermal state. A fixed number of photons is subtracted from a multimode quantum state, but only a subsystem of a lower number of modes is registered, in which the number of subtracted photons turns out to be a non-fixed random variable. It is shown that the investigation of multiphoton subtracted multimode thermal states provides a direct study of the fundamental quantum-statistical properties of bosons using a simple experimental implementation. The developed experimental setup plays a role of a specific boson lototron, which is based on the fundamental link between the statistics of boson systems and the Polya distribution. It is shown that the calculation of the photon number distribution based on the Polya‟s urn scheme is equivalent to a calculation using statistical weights for boson systems. A mathematical model based on the composition of the Polya distribution and thermal state is developed and verified. The experimental results are in a good agreement with the developed theory.

Multimode thermal states with multiphoton subtraction: Study of the photon-number distribution in the selected subsystem

Konstantin G. Katamadze, G. V. Avosopiants, Nadezhda A. Bogdanova +2 more

Thermal states of light are widely used in quantum optics due to their correlation properties. As is well known, their correlation properties and the photon-number distribution as a whole are strongly dependent on the mode number selected by the detection scheme. The same changes can be caused by photon subtraction. Therefore, we describe the general case of the multimode thermal state after a multiphoton subtraction, when the photon-number statistics is registered by the detector selecting a part of the initial modes. We present an analytical form of the obtained photon-number distribution and its general properties and check them in the experiment.

Multiphoton subtracted thermal states: description, preparation, measurement and utilization

Konstantin G. Katamadze, B. I. Bantysh, Yu. I. Bogdanov +2 more

Photon creation and annihilation are two basic operators in quantum optics. Their experimental implementation provides a perfect toolbox for quantum state engineering. The simplest quantum states, which can be modified both by photon creation and annihilation are thermal states of light. Therefore, the multiphoton subtracted thermal states (MPSTS) draw attention of quantum optics experimentalists last decade. Despite its simplicity they serve as a good testing area for study of a number of quantum phenomena. In the current work we give a review of the recent works related to MPSTS: their theoretical description, preparation and measurement technique and their utilization as a testing area for studying some quantum phenomena like non-Gaussianity, Photonic Maxwell‟s Demon, Quantum Vampire and so on.

Multimode theory of single-photon subtraction

Valentin Averchenko, Clément Jacquard, Valérian Thiel +2 more

We develop a general theory to describe the manipulation of a multimode quantum state of light via the subtraction of a single photon. The theory is applicable for various types of subtraction schemes independent of the physical nature of the light modes, their number or the embedded quantum states. We show that different subtraction schemes can be described in a unified approach through the characterization of their intrinsic subtraction modes. The conditional state of the multimode quantum light after the photon subtraction is defined by the number of subtraction modes and their matching with the light modes. We propose the manipulation of light states by controlling the subtraction modes. Performing a photon subtraction on a multimode quantum resource is promising for the implementation of a number of quantum information protocols in all-optical, multiplexed and scalable way.

Multiphoton quantum-state engineering using conditional measurements

Omar S. Magaña‐Loaiza, Roberto de J. León‐Montiel, Armando Pérez-Leija +7 more

Abstract The quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation predicts characteristic statistical fluctuations for light sources as diverse as sunlight, laser radiation, and molecule fluorescence. Indeed, these underlying statistical fluctuations of light are associated with the fundamental physical processes behind their generation. In this contribution, we experimentally demonstrate that the manipulation of the quantum electromagnetic fluctuations of two-mode squeezed vacuum states leads to a family of quantum-correlated multiphoton states with tunable mean photon numbers and degree of correlation. Our technique relies on the use of conditional measurements to engineer the excitation mode of the field through the simultaneous subtraction of photons from two-mode squeezed vacuum states. The experimental generation of nonclassical multiphoton states by means of photon subtraction unveils novel mechanisms to control fundamental properties of light. As a remarkable example, we demonstrate the engineering of a quantum state of light with up to ten photons, exhibiting nearly Poissonian photon statistics, that constitutes an important step towards the generation of entangled lasers. Our technique enables a robust protocol to prepare quantum states with multiple photons in high-dimensional spaces and, as such, it constitutes a novel platform for exploring quantum phenomena in mesoscopic systems.

Non-Gaussianity of multiple photon-subtracted thermal states in terms of compound-Poisson photon number distribution parameters: theory and experiment

G. V. Avosopiants, Konstantin G. Katamadze, Yu. I. Bogdanov +2 more

Abstract The multiphoton-subtracted thermal states are an interesting example of quantum states of light which are both classical and non-Gaussian. All the properties of such states can be described by just two parameters of compound-Poisson photon number distribution. The non-Gaussianity dependence on these parameters is calculated numerically and analytically. The loss of non-Gaussianity during the optical damping is also studied experimentally.

Thermal states of light are widely used in quantum optics for testing of various quantum phenomena. Particularly, they can be utilized for characterization of photon creation and photon annihilation operations. During the last decade the problem of photon subtraction from multimode quantum states has become of much significance. Therefore in this paper we present a technique for statistical parameter estimation of multimode multiphoton-subtracted thermal states of light, which can be used for the multimode photon annihilation test.
