Abstract

We present systematic proofs of statements about probability representations of qudit density states in terms of standard probability distributions of dichotomic random variables. New relations and new entropic-information inequalities are derived. The examples of 3- and 4- level states are explicitly worked out.

Qubit state vector in probability representation of quantum mechanics

Vladimir N. Chernega, Olga V. Man’ko, Vladimir I. Man’ko

Review of probability representation of quantum mechanics where the system states are identified with fair probability distributions is presented. Examples of qubits and qutrits are given in detail. The explicit expressions of the qubit density matrices and qubit state vectors in terms of probabilities of dichotomic random variables are discussed. The wave function of a qubit state, and its phase which is not contained in the density matrix of the state, are expressed in terms of the dichotomic probabilities. The generalisation of the probability representation to the case of qudit state is considered. The Schrödinger–like equation for spectra of Hermitian and non Hermitian Hamiltonians is written in the new form of equation for the dichotomic probabilities.

Probability Representation of Quantum Channels

Ashot S. Avanesov, Vladimir I. Man’ko

Using the known possibility to associate the completely positive maps with density matrices and recent results on expressing the density matrices with sets of classical probability distributions of dichotomic random variables we construct the probability representation of the completely positive maps. In this representation, any completely positive map of qubit state density matrix is identified with the set of classical coin probability distributions. Examples of the maps of qubit states are studied in detail. The evolution equation of quantum states is written in the form of the classical-like kinetic equation for probability distributions identified with qubit state.

Tomographic entropic inequalities in the probability representation of quantum mechanics

Margarita A. Man’ko, Vladimir I. Man’ko

A review of the tomographic-probability representation of classical and quantum states is presented. The tomographic entropies and entropic uncertainty relations are discussed in connection with ambiguities in the interpretation of the state tomograms which are considered either as a set of the probability distributions of random variables depending on extra parameters or as a single joint probability distribution of these random variables and random parameters with specific properties of the marginals. Examples of optical tomograms of photon states, symplectic tomograms, and unitary spin tomograms of qudits are given. A new universal integral inequality for generic wave function is obtained on the base of tomographic entropic uncertainty relations.

From quantum carpets to quantum suprematism—the probability representation of qudit states and hidden correlations

Margarita A. Man’ko, Vladimir I. Man’ko

Abstract We develop the tomographic-probability picture where quantum states of qudits (spin- j systems, N -level atoms) are described by means of sets of fair classical probability distributions associated with properties of sets of dichotomic classical random variables. We formulate the superposition principle of pure quantum states as nonlinear addition rule of standard probabilities. The invertible map of the density matrices of qudit states onto the probability distributions is illustrated by their geometric representation in terms of triangles and squares called Malevich’s squares. We discuss an analogy of the squares with the quantum carpet picture. New entropic inequalities obtained due to the introduced map of the density matrices onto Malevich’s squares are studied. The correlations in systems without subsystems (hidden correlations) are discussed.

Joint probability distributions and conditional probabilities in the tomographic representation of quantum states

Margarita A. Man’ko

The tomographic-probability distributions associated with quantum states of photons and qudits are generalized and considered as joint probability distributions and conditional probability distributions. Entropic inequalities such as the subadditivity condition as well as nonnegativity of Shannon entropy are applied for obtaining new analogues of entropic uncertainty relations.

Information and entropic characteristics of photon and qudit quantum states

Margarita A. Man’ko

The probability distribution determining the quantum states of photons and qudits are reviewed. Shannon, Rényi and Tsallis entropies associated with the probability distributions are discussed. Shannon information associated with quantum states in the probability representation is considered. Known inequalities for the classical joint probability distributions determining quantum states of multipartite systems are discussed in detail and the relationship to the inequalities known for quantum von Neumann entropy of the states is presented. Properties of subadditivity and strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy of two-partite and multipartite qudit states are considered in view of the subadditivity and strong subadditivity properties of Shannon entropies associated with classical joint probability distributions determining the multiqudit quantum states. The new entropic uncertainty relationships for optical tomograms are suggested as a test for accuracy of the homodyne reconstructing the photon state.
