Higher-Order Topological Mott Insulators

Abstract

We propose a new correlated topological state, which we call a higher-order topological Mott insulator (HOTMI). This state exhibits a striking bulk-boundary correspondence due to electron correlations. Namely, the topological properties in the bulk, characterized by the Z_{3} spin-Berry phase, result in gapless corner modes emerging only in spin excitations (i.e., the single-particle excitations remain gapped around the corner). We demonstrate the emergence of the HOTMI in a Hubbard model on the kagome lattice, and elucidate how strong correlations change gapless corner modes at the noninteracting case.

Higher-order topological Mott insulator on the pyrochlore lattice

Yuichi Otsuka, Tsuneya Yoshida, Koji Kudo +2 more

We provide the first unbiased evidence for a higher-order topological Mott insulator in three dimensions by numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations. This insulating phase is adiabatically connected to a third-order topological insulator in the noninteracting limit, which features gapless modes around the corners of the pyrochlore lattice and is characterized by a [Formula: see text] spin-Berry phase. The difference between the correlated and non-correlated topological phases is that in the former phase the gapless corner modes emerge only in spin excitations being Mott-like. We also show that the topological phase transition from the third-order topological Mott insulator to the usual Mott insulator occurs when the bulk spin gap solely closes.

Characterization of a Topological Mott Insulator in One Dimension

Tsuneya Yoshida, Robert Peters, Satoshi Fujimoto +1 more

We investigate properties of a topological Mott insulator in one dimension by examining the bulk topological invariant and the entanglement spectrum of a correlated electron model. We clarify how gapless edge states in a noninteracting topological band insulator evolve into spinon edge states in a topological Mott insulator. Furthermore, we propose a topological Mott transition, which is a new type of topological phase transition which has never been observed in free fermion systems. This unconventional transition occurs in spin liquid phases in the Mott insulator and is accompanied by zeros of the single-electron Green's function and a gap closing in the spin excitation spectrum.

Topological charge excitations and Green's function zeros in paramagnetic Mott insulators

Emile Pangburn, C. Pépin, Anurag Banerjee

We investigate the emergence of topological features in the charge excitations of Mott insulators in the Chern-Hubbard model. In the strong correlation regime, treating electrons as the sum of holons and doublons excitations, we compute the topological phase diagram of Mott insulators at half-filling using composite operator formalism. The Green function zeros manifest as the tightly bound pairs of such elementary excitations of the Mott insulators. Our analysis examines the winding number associated with the occupied Hubbard bands and the band of Green's function zeros. We show that both the poles and zeros show gapless states and zeros, respectively, in line with bulk-boundary correspondence. The gapless edge states emerge in a junction geometry connecting a topological Mott band insulator and a topological Mott zeros phase. These include an edge electronic state that carries a charge and a charge-neutral gapless zero mode. Our study is relevant to several twisted materials with flat bands where interactions play a dominant role.

Higher-order topological insulator in a modified Haldane-Hubbard model

Tian-Cheng Yi, Hai‐Qing Lin, Rubem Mondaini

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a modified spinless Haldane-Hubbard model, with broken threefold rotational symmetry, employing exact diagonalization calculations. The interplay of asymmetry, interactions, and topology gives rise to a rich phase diagram. The noninteracting limit of the Hamiltonian exhibits a higher-order topological insulator characterized by the existence of corner modes, in contrast to known chiral edge metallic states of the standard Haldane model. Our investigation demonstrates that these symmetry-protected states are robust to the presence of finite interactions. Furthermore, in certain regimes of parameters, we show that a topological Mott insulator exists in this model, where a nontrivial topological bulk coexists with an interaction-driven charge-density wave, whose emergence is characterized by a ${Z}_{2}$-symmetry breaking within the $3d\text{-Ising}$ universality class.

Edge Zeros and Boundary Spinons in Topological Mott Insulators

Niklas Wagner, Daniele Guerci, Andrew J. Millis +1 more

We use a real-space slave-rotor theory of the physics of topological Mott insulators, using the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model as an example, and show that a topological gap in the Green function zeros corresponds to a gap in the bulk spinon spectrum and implies a gapless band of edge zeros and a spinon edge mode. We then consider an interface between a topological Mott insulator and a conventional topological insulator showing how the spinon edge mode of the topological Mott insulator combines with the spin part of the conventional electron topological edge state, leaving a non-Fermi liquid edge mode described by a gapless propagating holon and gapped spinon state. Our work demonstrates the physical meaning of Green function zeros and shows that interfaces between conventional and Mott topological insulators are a rich source of new physics.

Higher-order symmetry-protected topological states for interacting bosons and fermions

Yizhi You, Trithep Devakul, F. J. Burnell +1 more

Here, the authors propose a zoology of exotic materials that are gapped in their interior and on their surfaces but support gapless mode at corners or along hinges. Exemplifying a much richer bulk-boundary correspondence, this phenomenology is now termed a higher-order topological phase. The protected corner or hinge modes are a consequence of spatial symmetry, which traps and pins the low-energy modes localized at the high symmetric point.
