In quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) quantum antiferromagnets, the complicated interplay of intrachain and interchain exchange couplings may give rise to rich phenomena. Motivated by recent progress on field-induced phase transitions in the q1D antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound YbAlO3, we study the phase diagram of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with Ising anisotropic interchain couplings under a longitudinal magnetic field via large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and investigate the role of the spin anisotropy of the interchain coupling on the ground state of the system. We find that the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling can significantly enhance the longitudinal spin correlations and drive the system to an incommensurate AFM phase at intermediate magnetic fields, which is understood as a longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW). With increasing field, the ground state changes to a canted AFM order with transverse spin correlations. We further provide a global phase diagram showing how the competition between the LSDW and the canted AFM states is tuned by the Ising anisotropy of the interchain coupling.
We study the spin-
21 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in both uniform and (perpendicular) staggered magnetic fields using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. This model has been shown earlier to describe the physics of the copper benzoate materials in magnetic field. In the present work, we extend the study to more general case for a systematic investigation of the field-induced gap and related properties of the spin-
21 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain. In particular, we explore the high magnetic field regime where interesting behaviors in the field-induced gap, magnetization, and spin correlation functions are found. Careful examination of the low energy properties and magnetization reveals interesting competing effects of the staggered and uniform fields. The incommensurate behavior in the spin correlation functions is demonstrated and discussed in detail. The present work reproduces earlier results in good agreement with experimental data on copper benzoate and predicts new interesting field-induced features at very high magnetic field.
We study the interplay of electric and magnetic order in the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-
21 XXZ chain with large Ising anisotropy in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, interpreting the DM interaction as a coupling between the local electric polarization and an external electric field. We obtain the ground state phase diagram using the density matrix renormalization group method and compute various ground state quantities like the magnetization, staggered magnetization, electric polarization and spin correlation functions, etc. In the presence of both longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields, there are three different phases corresponding to a gapped N\'eel phase with antiferromagnetic (AF) order, gapped saturated phase, and a critical incommensurate gapless phase. The external electric field modifies the phase boundaries but does not lead to any new phases. Both external magnetic fields and electric fields can be used to tune between the phases. We also show that the transverse magnetic field induces a vector chiral order in the N\'eel phase (even in the absence of an electric field) which can be interpreted as an electric polarization in a direction parallel to the AF order.
The ordering of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic
S=1/2 chains, as relevant for the recent experimentally investigated spin chain materials, is considered theoretically. The one-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model with random exchange interactions is treated numerically on finite chains with the density-matrix renormalization-group approach as well as with the standard renormalization analysis, both within the mean-field approximation for interchain coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$. Results for the ordering temperature
TN and for the ordered moment
m0 are presented and are both reduced with increasing disorder, agreeing with the experimental observations. The most pronounced effect of the random singlet concept appears to be a very large span of local ordered moments, becoming wider with decreasing ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$, consistent with the $\ensuremath{\mu}$-SR experimental findings.
The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of spin-
1∕2 Heisenberg diamond chains are investigated in three different cases: (a)
J1,
J2,
J3>0 (frustrated), (b)
J1,
J3<0,
J2>0 (frustrated), and (c)
J1,
J2>0,
J3<0 (nonfrustrated), where the bond coupling
Ji (i=1,2,3)>0 stands for an antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, and
<0 for a ferromagnetic (F) interaction. The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) technique is invoked to study the properties of the system in the ground state, while the transfer-matrix renormalization-group (TMRG) technique is applied to explore the thermodynamic properties. The local magnetic moments, spin-correlation functions, and static structure factors are discussed in the ground state for the three cases. It is shown that the static structure factor
S(q) shows peaks at wave vectors $q=a\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$
(a=0,1,2,3,4,5) for different couplings in a zero magnetic field, which, however, in the magnetic fields where the magnetization plateau with
m=1∕6 pertains, exhibits the peaks only at
q=0, $2\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$, and $4\ensuremath{\pi}∕3$, which are found to be couplings independent. The DMRG results of the zero-field static structure factor can be nicely fitted by a linear superposition of six modes, where two fitting equations are proposed. It is observed that the six modes are closely related to the low-lying excitations of the system. At finite temperatures, the magnetization, susceptibility, and specific heat show various behaviors for different couplings. The double-peak structures of the susceptibility, and specific heat against temperature are obtained, where the peak positions and heights are found to depend on the competition of the couplings. It is also uncovered that the
XXZ anisotropy of F and AF couplings leads the system of case (c) to display quite different behaviors. In addition, the experimental data of the susceptibility, specific heat, and magnetization for the compound
Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 are fairly compared with our TMRG results.
The research presented here focuses on the theoretical investigation of spinons in quasi one-dimensional quantum spin chains from the perspective of neutron scattering, with emphasis placed on the calculation of dynamic spin structure factors for both unpolarised and polarised incident neutrons. Two anisotropic versions of the Heisenberg spin chain are considered for such an examination: the spin-
1/2 antiferromagnetic
XXZ model and the spin-
1/2 ferromagnetic
XYZ model.The
XYZ model supports spinon scattering (modelled at finite temperature) and is related to the so-called Villain mode. The introduction of a perturbation in the form of an external transverse magnetic field or Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) leads to the emergence of incommensurability in the system; such a result is a signature of fractional excitations. The presence of these interactions also give rise to a chiral response associated with the spinons in the polarised term of the scattering cross section. The inelastic scattering cross section is computed for both unpolarised and polarised neutrons. In relation to the antiferromagnetic
XXZ model, emphasis is on spinon pair creation (modelled at
T=0rmK). Motivated by the presence of a chiral response in the case of the
XYZ model mentioned above, a new technique is developed in order to incorporate DMI and the transverse magnetic field so that one can determine if there is a chiral property associated with the two-spinon system. This technique is numerical in nature and is based on Green function methods. Using the results produced by the Green function approach, the inelastic cross section in the presence of an external transverse magnetic field is computed for the first time. The result is compared with experimental neutron scattering data; good agreement is demonstrated between theory and experiments on
rmCsCoBr3.Finally, the Green function approach is generalised to account for the interactions between spin chains in magnetic compounds described by a staggered field. Various dynamic structure factors are computed for this scenario with results compared to experiment; good agreement between the theory and experiments on
rmRbCoCl3 is shown.
