Abstract

The Drude weight for the spin transport of the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg chain in the critical regime is evaluated exactly for finite temperatures. We combine the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz with the functional relations of type $Y$-system satisfied by the row-to-row transfer matrices. This makes it possible to evaluate the asymptotic behavior of the finite temperature spin Drude weight with respect to the system size. As a result, the Drude weight converges to the results obtained by Zotos (Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1764 (1999)), however with very slow convergence upon increase of the system size. This strong size dependence may explain that extrapolations from various numerical approaches yield conflicting results.

Spin Drude weight for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin

Shinya Ae, Kazumitsu Sakai

Abstract Using generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), we exactly evaluate the finite-temperature spin Drude weight at zero magnetic field for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin and easy-plane anisotropy. First, we construct the fusion hierarchy of the quantum transfer matrices (T-functions) and derive functional relations (T- and Y-systems) satisfied by the T-functions and certain combinations of them (Y-functions). Through analytical arguments, the Y-system is reduced to a set of non-linear integral equations, equivalent to the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations. Then, employing GHD, we calculate the spin Drude weight at arbitrary finite temperatures. As a result, a characteristic fractal-like structure of the Drude weight is observed at arbitrary spin, similar to the spin-1/2 case. In our approach, the solutions to the TBA equations (i.e. the Y-functions) can be explicitly written in terms of the T-functions, thus allowing for a systematic calculation of the high-temperature limit of the Drude weight.

Zero-frequency transport properties of one-dimensional spin- 12 systems

Fabian Heidrich‐Meisner, A. Honecker, D. C. Cabra +1 more

We report a detailed analysis of the Drude weights for both thermal and spin transport in one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems by means of exact diagonalization and analytic approaches at finite temperatures. Transport properties are studied first for the integrable $\mathrm{XXZ}$ model and second for various nonintegrable systems such as the dimerized chain, the frustrated chain, and the spin ladder. We compare our results obtained by exact diagonalization and mean-field theory with those of the Bethe ansatz, bosonization, and other numerical studies in the case of the anisotropic Heisenberg model both in the gapless and gapped regime. In particular, we find indications that the Drude weight for spin transport is finite in the thermodynamic limit for the isotropic chain. For the nonintegrable models, a finite-size analysis of the numerical data for the Drude weights is presented, covering the entire parameter space of the dimerized and frustrated chain. We also discuss which conclusions can be drawn from bosonization regarding the question of whether the Drude weights are finite or not. One of our main results is that the Drude weights vanish in the thermodynamic limit for nonintegrable models.

Fine structure of the nonlinear Drude weights in the spin- 12 XXZ chain

Yuhi Tanikawa, Hosho Katsura

We study nonlinear Drude weights (NLDWs) for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain in the critical regime at zero temperature. The NLDWs are generalizations of the linear Drude weight. Via the nonlinear extension of the Kohn formula, they can be read off from higher-order finite-size corrections to the ground-state energy in the presence of a $U(1)$ magnetic flux. The analysis of the ground-state energy based on the Bethe ansatz reveals that the NLDWs exhibit convergence, power-law, and logarithmic divergence, depending on the anisotropy parameter $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$. We determine the convergent and power-law divergent regions, which depend on the order of the response $n$. Then, we examine the behavior of the NLDWs at the boundary between the two regions and find that they converge for $n=0,1,2\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}(\mathrm{mod}\phantom{\rule{3.33333pt}{0ex}}4)$, while they show logarithmic divergence for $n=3\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}(\mathrm{mod}\phantom{\rule{3.33333pt}{0ex}}4)$. Furthermore, we identify particular anisotropies $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}=cos(\ensuremath{\pi}r/(r+1))$ ($r=1,2,3,...$) at which the NLDW at any order $n$ converges to a finite value.

Finite-size anomalies of the Drude weight: Role of symmetries and ensembles

R. J. Sánchez, Vipin Kerala Varma

We revisit the numerical problem of computing the high temperature spin stiffness, or Drude weight, $D$ of the spin-$1/2$ $XXZ$ chain using exact diagonalization to systematically analyze its dependence on system symmetries and ensemble. Within the canonical ensemble and for states with zero total magnetization, we find $D$ vanishes exactly due to spin-inversion symmetry for all but the anisotropies ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}}_{MN}=cos(\ensuremath{\pi}M/N)$ with $N,M\ensuremath{\in}{\mathbb{Z}}^{+}$ coprimes and $N>M$, provided system sizes $L\ensuremath{\ge}2N$, for which states with different spin-inversion signature become degenerate due to the underlying $s{l}_{2}$ loop algebra symmetry. All these loop-algebra degenerate states carry finite currents which we conjecture [based on data from the system sizes and anisotropies ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}}_{MN}$ (with $N<L/2$) available to us] to dominate the grand-canonical ensemble evaluation of $D$ in the thermodynamic limit. Including a magnetic flux not only breaks spin-inversion in the zero magnetization sector but also lifts the loop-algebra degeneracies in all symmetry sectors---this effect is more pertinent at smaller $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$ due to the larger contributions to $D$ coming from the low-magnetization sectors which are more sensitive to the system's symmetries. Thus we generically find a finite $D$ for fluxed rings and arbitrary $0<\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}<1$ in both ensembles. In contrast, at the isotropic point and in the gapped phase ($\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}\ensuremath{\ge}1$) $D$ is found to vanish in the thermodynamic limit, independent of symmetry or ensemble. Our analysis demonstrates how convergence to the thermodynamic limit within the gapless phase ($\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}<1$) may be accelerated and the finite-size anomalies overcome: $D$ extrapolates nicely in the thermodynamic limit to either the recently computed lower bound or the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz result provided both spin inversion is broken and the additional degeneracies at the ${\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}}_{MN}$ anisotropies are lifted.

Analytical results for the low-temperature Drude weight of the XXZ spin chain

Andrew Urichuk, Jesko Sirker, Andreas Klümper

Nondecaying dc currents in systems showing ballistic transport are characterized by a constant, known as the Drude weight. Here, the authors obtain analytical results for the spin Drude weight in the interacting anisotropic Heisenberg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain at low temperatures. The obtained analytical formula reveals that the Drude weight for any finite temperature exhibits a nowhere-continuous dependence on the spin anisotropy of the model.

Spin transport on the integrable XXZ chain

Using the Bethe ansatz method and generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), properties of the spin transport is analyzed for the integrable XXZ chain with the anisotropy 0 ≤ ∆ < 1.Our approach starts from reconstructing the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin.We obtain the fusion hierarchy of the quantum transfer matrices (T -functions) in the arbitrary spin case, and we derive functional relations (T -and Y -systems) satisfied by the T -functions and certain combinations of them (Y -functions).Through analytical arguments, the Y -system is reduced to a set of non-linear integral equations, equivalent to the TBA equations. At first, we use the TBA equations for some higher-spin chains in order to examine the regular zero frequency contribution to the spin current correlation (spin dc conductivity) for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. In the high temperature limit, we write down the dressed scattering kernels by one quasi-particle bare energies and exactly obtain the spin dc conductivity at zero magnetic field, which is proportional to the inverse temperature β at the β → 0 limit. We find that the high temperature proportionality constant σ reg 0 of the spin dc conductivity is discontinuous at all rational numbers of the anisotropy parameter p 0 = π/ cos -1 ∆ ≥ 2 with the gap increasing larger than the second power of growing magnetization on one quasiparticle. The isotropic ∆ = 1 point is exceptional.Close to this point, σ reg 0 slowly increases in proportion to the first power of the one quasi-particle magnetization. On the other hand, σ reg 0 is proportional to the second power of the same when p 0 approaches irrational numbers. At second, we examine the finite-temperature spin Drude weight for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin, where GHD methods are employed. We calculate the spin Drude weight at zero magnetic field, and we find a characteristic fractal-like structure of the Drude weight at arbitrary spin across a broad range of temperatures, similar to the spin-1/2 case.In our approach, the solutions to the TBA equations (i.e., the Y -functions) can be explicitly written in terms of the T -functions, thus allowing for a systematic calculation of the hightemperature limit of the Drude weight, as well as the spin dc conductivity in the spin 1/2 case.
