Abstract

The spin S=1/2 Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant attention since emerging candidate materials have provided a playground to test non-Abelian anyons. The Kitaev model with higher spins has also been theoretically studied, as it may offer another path to a quantum spin liquid. However, a microscopic route to achieve higher spin Kitaev models in solid state materials has not been rigorously derived. Here we present a theory of the spin S=1 Kitaev interaction in two-dimensional edge-shared octahedral systems. Essential ingredients are strong spin-orbit coupling in anions and strong Hund's coupling in transition metal cations. The S=1 Kitaev and ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions are generated from superexchange paths. Taking into account the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg term from direct-exchange paths, the Kitaev interaction dominates the physics of the S=1 system. Using an exact diagonalization technique, we show a finite regime of S=1 spin liquid in the presence of the Heisenberg interaction. Candidate materials are proposed, and generalization to higher spins is discussed.

Microscopic roadmap to a Kitaev-Yao-Lee spin-orbital liquid

Derek Churchill, Emily Z. Zhang, Hae‐Young Kee

The exactly solvable spin-1/2 Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice has drawn significant interest, as it offers a pathway to realizing the long-sought-after quantum spin liquid. Building upon the Kitaev model, Yao and Lee introduced another exactly solvable model on an unusual star lattice featuring non-abelian spinons. The additional pseudospin degrees of freedom in this model could provide greater stability against perturbations, making this model appealing. However, a mechanism to realize such an interaction in a standard honeycomb lattice remains unknown. Here, we provide a microscopic theory to obtain the Yao-Lee model, on a honeycomb lattice by utilizing strong spin-orbit coupling of anions edge-shared between two e g ions in the exchange processes. This mechanism leads to the desired bond-dependent interaction among spins rather than orbitals, unique to our model, implying that the orbitals fractionalize into gapless Majorana fermions and fermionic octupolar excitations emerge. Since the conventional Kugel-Khomskii interaction also appears, we examine the phase diagram, including these interactions, using classical Monte Carlo simulations and exact diagonalization techniques. Our findings reveal a broad region of disordered states that break rotational symmetry in the bond energy, suggesting intriguing behavior reminiscent of a spin-orbital liquid.

Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian for high-spin d7 Mott insulators

Ryoya Sano, Yasuyuki Kato, Yukitoshi Motome

In the search for quantum spin liquids, candidate materials for the Kitaev model and its extensions have been intensively explored during the past decade, as the models realize the exact quantum spin liquids in the ground state. Thus far, insulating magnets in the low-spin ${d}^{5}$ electron configuration under the strong spin-orbit coupling have been studied for realizing the Kitaev-type bond-dependent anisotropic interactions between the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublets. To extend the candidates, here we investigate the systems in a high-spin ${d}^{7}$ electron configuration, whose ground state is described by the spin-orbital entangled Kramers doublet. By the second-order perturbation in terms of the ${t}_{2g}\ensuremath{-}{t}_{2g}$ and ${t}_{2g}\ensuremath{-}{e}_{g}$ hoppings, we show that the effective spin model possesses the anisotropic Kitaev interactions as well as the isotropic Heisenberg ones. While the Kitaev interaction is always ferromagnetic, the Heisenberg interaction can become either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on the Coulomb interactions and the crystalline electric fields. We also derive the effective model for the low-spin ${d}^{5}$ electron configuration within the same perturbation scheme, in which the Kitaev interaction becomes both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, while the Heisenberg one is always ferromagnetic. Referring to the previous study for the Kitaev-Heisenberg model, we find that the quantum spin liquid phase exists in the reasonable parameter region in both ${d}^{7}$ and ${d}^{5}$ cases, while the former has a richer structure of the phase diagram. We discuss the advantages of the ${d}^{7}$ case in comparison with the ${d}^{5}$ case. Our results indicate that the high-spin ${d}^{7}$ state provides another platform for the Kitaev-type quantum spin liquid.

Theory of the field-revealed Kitaev spin liquid

Jacob S. Gordon, Andrei Catuneanu, Erik Schwartz Sørensen +1 more

Abstract Elementary excitations in entangled states such as quantum spin liquids may exhibit exotic statistics different from those obeyed by fundamental bosons and fermions. Non-Abelian anyons exist in a Kitaev spin liquid—the ground state of an exactly solvable model. A smoking-gun signature of these excitations, namely a half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity, was recently reported in α-RuCl3. While fascinating, a microscopic theory for this phenomenon remains elusive because the pure Kitaev model cannot display this effect in an intermediate magnetic field. Here we present a microscopic theory of the Kitaev spin liquid emerging between the low- and high-field states. Essential to this result is an antiferromagnetic off-diagonal symmetric interaction which allows the Kitaev spin liquid to protrude from the ferromagnetic Kitaev limit under a magnetic field. This generic model displays a strong field anisotropy, and we predict a wide spin liquid regime when the field is perpendicular to the honeycomb plane.

Quantum phase transitions in the spin-1 Kitaev-Heisenberg chain

Wen‐Long You, Gaoyong Sun, Jie Ren +2 more

Recently, it has been proposed that higher-spin analogs of the Kitaev interactions $K>0$ may also occur in a number of materials with strong Hund's and spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we use Lanczos diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods to investigate numerically the $S=1$ Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The ground-state phase diagram and quantum phase transitions are investigated by employing local and nonlocal spin correlations. We identify two ordered phases at negative Heisenberg coupling $J<0$: a ferromagnetic phase with $\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{i}^{z}{S}_{i+1}^{z}\ensuremath{\rangle}>0$ and an intermediate left-left-right-right phase with $\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{i}^{x}{S}_{i+1}^{x}\ensuremath{\rangle}\ensuremath{\ne}0$. A quantum spin liquid is stable near the Kitaev limit, while a topological Haldane phase is found for $J>0$.

Tuning into the Kitaev spin liquid phase: A spin model on the honeycomb lattice with two types of Heisenberg exchange couplings

Yue Yu, Long Liang, Qian Niu +1 more

We study a spin model on honeycomb lattice with two types of Heisenberg exchange couplings, $J$ and $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{J}$, where $J$ is for the conventional spin and $\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{J}$ is for rotated spin. When $J=0$, the system is either in a stripy antiferromagnetic order ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{J}<0$, ferromagnetic for rotated spin) or a zigzag antiferromagnetic order ($\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{J}>0$, antiferromagnetic for rotated spin). The competition between two ferromagnetic orders or between two antiferromagnetic orders induces Kitaev's spin liquid phase, characterized by the exactly solvable Kitaev model ($J=\stackrel{\ifmmode \tilde{}\else \~{}\fi{}}{J}$). Our model can be applied to layered Mott insulators $A$${}_{2}$IrO${}_{3}$ ($A=\text{Li}$, Na). For a monolayer of Li${}_{2}$IrO${}_{3}$, we show that it is possible to tune the controlling parameter into the Kitaev spin liquid regime by a link-dependent Rashba spin-orbital coupling.
