Abstract

On the basis of a quantum microscopic approach we study the cooperative effects induced by the dipole-dipole interaction in an ensemble of pointlike impurity centers located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We analyze the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and on the radiation trapping. We show that the electric field modifies the cooperative Lamb shift, as well as the character of sub- and super-radiant decay. We also demonstrate that electro-optical effects in the presence of a surface are essentially different in comparison with those in free space. The nonmonotonic behavior of electro-optical effects in the presence of a surface with increasing of the electric field has been shown.

Cooperative spontaneous decay of local excitation in a dense and disordered ensemble of point-like impurity atoms near a charged conductive surface

A. S. Kuraptsev

Abstract On the basis of the general quantum microscopic theory we study the process of spontaneous decay of an excited atom in a dense and disordered ensemble of point-like impurity atoms embedded into transparent dielectric and located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We have analyzed the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the character of interatomic dipole-dipole interaction. This leads to the modification of the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and the spontaneous decay dynamics. We have shown that the electric field changes the cooperative Lamb shift, as well as the character of sub- and superradiant decay.

Dipole–dipole interaction between motionless point atoms located near a charged conductive plate

A. S. Kuraptsev, Igor M. Sokolov

Abstract On the basis of a quantum microscopic approach, we study the excitation dynamics of two motionless point atoms located in fixed positions near a perfectly conductive charged surface. We analyze the spontaneous decay rate of individual atoms near the plate, as well as the strength of the dipole–dipole interaction between different atoms. It is shown that the spontaneous decay rate of an excited atom depends to a significant extent on its distance from the mirror. In the case where the interatomic separation is smaller than or comparable to the wavelength of the resonant radiation, the spontaneous decay dynamics of an excited atom is cooperative, so it is described by a multi-exponential law. It is shown that an electrostatic field caused by the charged plate modifies the character of the dipole–dipole interaction.

Light trapping in an ensemble of pointlike impurity centers in a Fabry-Perot cavity

A. S. Kuraptsev, Igor M. Sokolov

We report the development of quantum microscopic theory of quasiresonant dipole-dipole interaction in the ensembles of impurity atoms imbedded into transparent dielectric and located in a Fabry-Perot cavity. On the basis of the general approach we study the simultaneous influence of the cavity and resonant dipole-dipole interaction on the shape of the line of atomic transition as well as on light trapping in dense impurity ensembles. We analyze this influence depending on the size of the ensemble, its density, as well as on rms deviation of the transition frequency shifts caused by the symmetry disturbance of the internal fields of the dielectric medium. Obtained results are compared with the case when the cavity is absent. We show that the cavity can essentially modify cooperative polyatomic effects.

Specific Features of Interatomic Dipole–Dipole Interaction near a Perfectly Conducting Charged Surface

A. S. Kuraptsev, Igor M. Sokolov

Specific features of dipole–dipole interaction between two motionless point atoms located near a perfectly conducting charged plate are investigated theoretically within a consistent quantum microscopic approach. These features are analyzed on the basis of the dynamics of cooperative spontaneous decay of excited states of a diatomic quasimolecule. The decay rate is investigated as a function of the interatomic distance, the orientation angle of the quasimolecule with respect to the plane of the plate, and the distance between the quasimolecule and the plate. It is shown that the conducting plate significantly modifies the character of dipole–dipole interaction even when the plate is not charged. When the plate is charged, the Stark splitting of atomic levels leads to an additional modification of the interatomic interaction. The features observed are explained on the basis of the analysis of the spectrum of collective states of diatomic molecules.

The features of collective level shift and line broadening in a fabry-perot microcavity and near the conducting surface

A. S. Kuraptsev, Igor M. Sokolov

On the basis of consequent microscopic quantum approach we calculate collective level shifts and line broadening in the polyatomic ensemble located in the Fabry-Perot cavity or near the conducting surface. We show that the cavity or the surface can essentially modify dipole-dipole interaction and consequently spectral properties of studied impurity ensembles. This modification is explained by the peculiarities of the structure of modes of electromagnetic field in these cases.

Peculiarities of excitation trapping in dense polyatomic ensemble in a Fabry-Perot cavity

A. S. Kuraptsev, Igor M. Sokolov

We report the investigation of the peculiarities of excitation trapping caused by the cooperative effects in a disordered ensemble of point-like impurity centers (atoms) embedded in a transparent dielectric and located in a Fabry-Perot cavity. On the basis of the general quantum microscopic theory we have calculated cooperative spontaneous decay of an excited atom located in the center of a sample. It is shown that in the case when the distance between the mirrors of a cavity d is less or comparable with resonant wavelength of the atomic transition λ 0 , the character of cooperative effects in a cavity essentially differs from one without a cavity. For the opposite case d ≫ λ 0 cooperative effects in a cavity manifest themselves almost like in the case of absence of a cavity.
