Heating-Induced Long-Range η Pairing in the Hubbard Model

Abstract

We show how, upon heating the spin degrees of freedom of the Hubbard model to infinite temperature, the symmetries of the system allow the creation of steady states with long-range correlations between η pairs. We induce this heating with either dissipation or periodic driving and evolve the system towards a nonequilibrium steady state, a process which melts all spin order in the system. The steady state is identical in both cases and displays distance-invariant off-diagonal η correlations. These correlations were first recognized in the superconducting eigenstates described in Yang's seminal Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 2144 (1989)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.63.2144], which are a subset of our steady states. We show that our results are a consequence of symmetry properties and entirely independent of the microscopic details of the model and the heating mechanism.

Analytical solution for the steady states of the driven Hubbard model

Joseph Tindall, Frank Schlawin, Michael A. Sentef +1 more

Under the action of coherent periodic driving a generic quantum system will undergo Floquet heating and continuously absorb energy until it reaches a featureless thermal state. The phase-space constraints induced by certain symmetries can, however, prevent this and allow the system to dynamically form robust steady states with off-diagonal long-range order. In this work, we take the Hubbard model on an arbitrary lattice with arbitrary filling and, by simultaneously diagonalizing the two possible SU(2) symmetries of the system, we analytically construct the correlated steady states for different symmetry classes of driving. This construction allows us to make verifiable, quantitative predictions about the long-range particle-hole and spin-exchange correlations that these states can possess. In the case when both SU(2) symmetries are preserved in the thermodynamic limit we show how the driving can be used to form a unique condensate which simultaneously hosts particle-hole and spin-wave order.

η pairing and off-diagonal long-range order in a Hubbard model

Chen Ning Yang

It is shown in a simple Hubbard model that through a mechanism called \ensuremath{\eta} pairing one can construct many eigenstates of the Hamiltonian possessing off-diagonal long-range order. The intrapair distance is small. It is shown that these eigenstates are metastable and possess an energy gap.

Steady off-diagonal long-range order state in a half-filled dimerized Hubbard chain induced by a resonant pulsed field

X. Z. Zhang, Z. Song

We show that a resonant pulsed field can induce a steady superconducting state even in the deep Mott insulating phase of the dimerized Hubbard model. The superconductivity found here in the nonequilibrium steady state is due to the $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing mechanism, characterized by the existence of the off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), and is absent in the ground-state phase diagram. The key of the scheme lies in the generation of the field-induced charge density wave (CDW) state that is from the valence bond solid. The dynamics of this state resides in the highly excited subspace of the dimerized Hubbard model and is dominated by a $\ensuremath{\eta}$-spin ferromagnetic model. The decay of such long-living excitation is suppressed because of energy conservation. We also develop a dynamical method to detect the ODLRO of the nonequilibrium steady state. Our finding demonstrates that the nonequilibrium many-body dynamics induced by the interplay between the resonant external field and electron-electron interaction is an alternative pathway to access a new exotic quantum state, and also provides an alternative mechanism for enhancing superconductivity.

Exact eigenstates of multicomponent Hubbard models: SU( N ) magnetic η pairing, weak ergodicity breaking, and partial integrability

Masaya Nakagawa, Hosho Katsura, Masahito Ueda

We construct exact eigenstates of multicomponent Hubbard models in arbitrary dimensions by generalizing the η -pairing mechanism. Our models include the SU ( N ) Hubbard model as a special case. Unlike the conventional two-component case, the generalized η -pairing mechanism permits the construction of eigenstates that feature off-diagonal long-range order and magnetic long-range order. These states form fragmented fermionic condensates due to a simultaneous condensation of multicomponent η pairs. While the η -pairing states in the SU(2) Hubbard model are based on the η -pairing symmetry, the exact eigenstates in the N -component system with N ≥ 3 arise not from symmetry of the Hamiltonian but from a spectrum generating algebra defined in a restricted Hilbert space. We exploit this fact to show that the generalized η -pairing eigenstates do not satisfy the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and serve as quantum many-body scar states. This result indicates a weak breakdown of ergodicity in the N -component Hubbard models for N ≥ 3 . Furthermore, we show that these exact eigenstates constitute integrable subsectors in which the Hubbard Hamiltonian effectively reduces to a noninteracting model. This partial integrability causes various multicomponent Hubbard models to weakly break ergodicity. We propose a method of harnessing dissipation to distill the integrable part of the dynamics and elucidate a mechanism of nonthermalization caused by dissipation. This work establishes the coexistence of off-diagonal long-range order and SU ( N ) magnetism in excited eigenstates of the multicomponent Hubbard models, which presents a possibility of novel out-of-equilibrium pairing states of multicomponent fermions. These models unveil a unique feature of quantum thermalization of multicomponent fermions, which can experimentally be tested with cold-atom quantum simulators. Symplectic symmetry of Hubbard model and η pairing

Chunyan Sun, B. F. Li, Z. S. Li

By means of symplectic group Sp(2M), the symplectic symmetry of the Hubbard model and the η pairing are investigated to approach the eigenstates which have the largest spin multiplicities. The behavior of the off-diagonal long-range order of these eigenstates is examined by the criterion proposed by Yang and the energy diagram of the corresponding eigenvalues is elucidated by the η pairing mechanism. A basis set which is expressible in terms of η and ηa pairings is proposed.

Two generalizations of η pairing in extended Hubbard models

Hui Zhai

The Hubbard model in bipartite lattice has been rigorously proved to have $\ensuremath{\eta}$-paired states as eigenstates by C. N. Yang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 2144 (1989)]. In this paper, this result is first generalized to a triangular lattice and then even to an arbitrary lattice structure. We also consider its generalization to higher-spin Hubbard models. The conditions under which these models have $\ensuremath{\eta}$-paired states as eigenstates were obtained.
