Abstract

In quantum systems theory one of the fundamental problems boils down to: given an initial state, which final states can be reached by the dynamic system in question. Here we consider infinite-dimensional open quantum dynamical systems following a unital Kossakowski–Lindblad master equation extended by controls. More precisely, their time evolution shall be governed by an inevitable potentially unbounded Hamiltonian drift term H 0 , finitely many bounded control Hamiltonians H j allowing for (at least) piecewise constant control amplitudes [Formula: see text] plus a bang-bang (i.e., on-off) switchable noise term Г V in Kossakowski–Lindblad form. Generalizing standard majorization results from finite to infinite dimensions, we show that such bilinear quantum control systems allow to approximately reach any target state majorized by the initial one as up to now it only has been known in finite dimensional analogues. The proof of the result is currently limited to the bounded control Hamiltonians H j and for noise terms Г V with compact normal V.

Reachability in Controlled Markovian Quantum Systems

Frederik vom Ende

In quantum systems theory one of the fundamental problems boils down to: Given an initial state, which final states can be reached by the dynamic system in question? Formulated in the framework of bilinear control systems, the evolution shall be governed by an inevitable Hamiltonian drift term, finitely many control Hamiltonians allowing for (at least) piecewise constant control amplitudes, plus a (possibly bang-bang switchable) noise term in Kossakowski-Lindblad form. Now assuming switchable coupling of finite-dimensional systems to a thermal bath of arbitrary temperature, the core problem of reachability boils down to studying points in the standard simplex amenable to two types of controls that can be used interleaved: Permutations within the simplex, and contractions by a dissipative one-parameter semigroup. We illustrate how the solutions of the core problem pertain to the reachable set of the original controlled Markovian quantum system. This allows us to show that for global as well as local switchable coupling to a temperature-zero bath one can generate every quantum state from every initial state up to arbitrary precision. Moreover we present an inclusion for non-zero temperatures as a consequence of our results on d-majorization. Then we consider infinite-dimensional open quantum-dynamical systems following a unital Kossakowski-Lindblad master equation extended by controls. Here the drift Hamiltonian can be arbitrary, the finitely many control Hamiltonians are bounded, and the switchable noise term is generated by a single compact normal operator. Via new majorization results of ours, we show that such bilinear quantum control systems allow to approximately reach any target state majorized by the initial one, as up to now only has been known in finite-dimensional analogues.

Reachability in Controlled Markovian Quantum Systems

vom Ende, Frederik

We study reachable sets of coherently controllable open quantum systems with switchable coupling of two models: we show that finite-dimensional systems coupled to a temperature-zero bath allow for approximately generating every quantum state from every initial state. Also studying d-majorization yields an upper bound for non-zero temperature. Then we consider infinite-dimensional open systems following a unital evolution. For arbitrary drift, bounded control Hamiltonians, and noise generated by a compact normal operator, one can approximately reach any state majorized by the initial one.

Numerical estimation of reachable and controllability sets for a two-level open quantum system driven by coherent and incoherent controls

Oleg Vasilevich Morzhin, Alexander N. Pechen

The article considers a two-level open quantum system, whose evolution is governed by the Gorini–Kossakowski– Lindblad–Sudarshan master equation with Hamiltonian and dissipation superoperator depending, correspondingly, on piecewise constant coherent and incoherent controls with constrained magnitudes. Additional constraints on controls’ variations are also considered. The problem is analyzed using Bloch parametrization of system’s density matrix. We adapt the section method for obtaining outer parallelepipedal and pointwise estimations of reachable and controllability sets in the Bloch ball via solving a number of problems for optimizing coherent and incoherent controls with respect to some objective criteria. The differential evolution and dual annealing optimization methods are used. The numerical results show how the reachable sets’ estimations depend on distances between the system’s initial states and the Bloch ball’s center point, final times, constraints on controls’ magnitudes and variations.

Global Approximate Controllability of Quantum Systems by Form Perturbations and Applications

Aitor Balmaseda, Davide Lonigro, Juan Manuel Pérez-Pardo

Abstract. We provide sufficient conditions for the approximate controllability of infinite-dimensional quantum control systems corresponding to form perturbations of the drift Hamiltonian modulated by a control function. We rely on previous results on controllability of quantum bilinear control systems and obtain a priori [Formula: see text]-bounds of the controls for generic initial and target states. We apply a stability result for the nonautonomous Schrödinger equation to extend the results to systems defined by form perturbations, including singular perturbations. As an application of our results, we prove approximate controllability of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional box with a point-interaction with tuneable strength at the center of the box.

Quantum control in infinite dimensions and Banach-Lie algebras

Michael Keyl

In finite dimensions, controllability of bilinear quantum control systems can be decided quite easily in terms of the "Lie algebra rank condition" (LARC), such that only the systems Lie algebra has to be determined from a set of generators. In this paper we study how this idea can be lifted to infinite dimensions. To this end we look at control systems on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space which are given by an unbounded drift Hamiltonian H0and bounded control Hamiltonians H1,...,HN. The drift H0is assumed to have empty continuous spectrum. We use recurrence methods and the theory of Abelian von Neumann algebras to develop a scheme, which allows us to use an approximate version of LARC, in order to check approximate controllability of the control sysPtem in question.

On Reachable and Controllability Sets for Minimum-Time Control of an Open Two-Level Quantum System

Oleg Vasilevich Morzhin, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

Abstract We consider a two-level open quantum system whose dynamics is governed by the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad equation with Hamiltonian and dissipation superoperator depending, respectively, on coherent and incoherent controls. Results about reachability, controllability, and minimum-time control are obtained in terms of the Bloch parametrization. First, we consider the case when the zero coherent and incoherent controls satisfy the Pontryagin maximum principle in the class of piecewise continuous controls. Second, for zero coherent control and for incoherent control lying in the class of constant functions, the reachability and controllability sets of the system are exactly described and some analytical results on the minimum-time control are found. Third, we consider a series of increasing values of the final time and the corresponding classes of controls with zero incoherent control and with coherent control equal to zero until a switching time instant and to a cosine function after it. The corresponding reachable points in the Bloch ball are numerically obtained and visualized. Fourth, a known method for estimating reachable sets is adapted and used to analyze the situation where the zero coherent and incoherent controls satisfy the Pontryagin maximum principle in the class of piecewise continuous controls while, as shown numerically, are not optimal.
