Abstract

The article considers a two-level open quantum system, whose evolution is governed by the Gorini–Kossakowski– Lindblad–Sudarshan master equation with Hamiltonian and dissipation superoperator depending, correspondingly, on piecewise constant coherent and incoherent controls with constrained magnitudes. Additional constraints on controls’ variations are also considered. The problem is analyzed using Bloch parametrization of system’s density matrix. We adapt the section method for obtaining outer parallelepipedal and pointwise estimations of reachable and controllability sets in the Bloch ball via solving a number of problems for optimizing coherent and incoherent controls with respect to some objective criteria. The differential evolution and dual annealing optimization methods are used. The numerical results show how the reachable sets’ estimations depend on distances between the system’s initial states and the Bloch ball’s center point, final times, constraints on controls’ magnitudes and variations.

On Reachable and Controllability Sets for Minimum-Time Control of an Open Two-Level Quantum System

Oleg Vasilevich Morzhin, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

Abstract We consider a two-level open quantum system whose dynamics is governed by the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad equation with Hamiltonian and dissipation superoperator depending, respectively, on coherent and incoherent controls. Results about reachability, controllability, and minimum-time control are obtained in terms of the Bloch parametrization. First, we consider the case when the zero coherent and incoherent controls satisfy the Pontryagin maximum principle in the class of piecewise continuous controls. Second, for zero coherent control and for incoherent control lying in the class of constant functions, the reachability and controllability sets of the system are exactly described and some analytical results on the minimum-time control are found. Third, we consider a series of increasing values of the final time and the corresponding classes of controls with zero incoherent control and with coherent control equal to zero until a switching time instant and to a cosine function after it. The corresponding reachable points in the Bloch ball are numerically obtained and visualized. Fourth, a known method for estimating reachable sets is adapted and used to analyze the situation where the zero coherent and incoherent controls satisfy the Pontryagin maximum principle in the class of piecewise continuous controls while, as shown numerically, are not optimal.

On optimization of coherent and incoherent controls for two-level quantum systems

Oleg Vasilevich Morzhin, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

This paper considers some control problems for closed and open two-level quantum systems. The closed system's dynamics is governed by the Schrödinger equation with coherent control. The open system dynamics is governed by the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad master equation whose Hamiltonian depends on coherent control and superoperator of dissipation depends on incoherent control. For the closed system, we consider the problem of generation of the phase shift gate for some values of phases and final times for which we numerically show that zero coherent control, which is a stationary point of the objective functional, is not optimal; it gives an example of subtle point for practical solving quantum control problems. The two-stage method, which was developed in [48] for generic $N$-level open quantum systems for approximate generation of a given target density matrix, is modified here for the case of two-level systems. We modify the first ("incoherent") stage by numerically optimizing piecewise constant incoherent control instead of using constant incoherent control analytically computed using eigenvalues of the target density matrix. Exact analytical formulas are derived for the system state evolution, the objective functions and their gradients for the modified first stage. These formulas are then applied in the two-step gradient projection method. The numerical simulations show that the modified first stage duration can be significantly less than the unmodified first stage duration, but at the cost of performing optimization in the class of piecewise constant controls.

Generation of Density Matrices for Two Qubits Using Coherent and Incoherent Controls

Oleg Vasilevich Morzhin, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

Abstract In this work, we consider a pair of qubits controlled by coherent and incoherent controls. The dynamics of the two-qubit system is driven by a Gorini–Kossakowsky–Sudarchhan–Lindblad master equation where coherent control enters into the Hamiltonian and incoherent control inters into both the Hamiltonian (via Lamb shift) and the dissipative superoperator. Two classes of interaction between the system and the coherent field are considered. For this system, we analyze the control problem of generating a given target density matrix which is formulated as minimizing the Hilbert–Schmidt distance between the final density matrix and the target density matrix. Incoherent control is modeled as a sum of constant in time Gaussians with centers related with the transitions frequencies between the energy levels of the qubits. Coherent control in general formulation is considered as measurable function and in numerical experiments as piecewise constant function with constraints on magnitudes and variations. Finite-dimensional numerical optimization is performed using the dual annealing method; the corresponding results are described for some initial and target density matrices and for some set of the parameters of the control problem.

Quantum Gate Generation in Two-Level Open Quantum Systems by Coherent and Incoherent Photons Found with Gradient Search

Vadim N. Petruhanov, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

In this work, we consider an environment formed by incoherent photons as a resource for controlling open quantum systems via an incoherent control. We exploit a coherent control in the Hamiltonian and an incoherent control in the dissipator which induces the time-dependent decoherence rates γk(t) (via time-dependent spectral density of incoherent photons) for generation of single-qubit gates for a two-level open quantum system which evolves according to the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad (GKSL) master equation with time-dependent coefficients determined by these coherent and incoherent controls. The control problem is formulated as minimization of the objective functional, which is the sum of Hilbert-Schmidt norms between four fixed basis states evolved under the GKSL master equation with controls and the same four states evolved under the ideal gate transformation. The exact expression for the gradient of the objective functional with respect to piecewise constant controls is obtained. Subsequent optimization is performed using a gradient type algorithm with an adaptive step size that leads to oscillating behaviour of the gradient norm vs. iterations. Optimal trajectories in the Bloch ball for various initial states are computed. A relation of quantum gate generation with optimization on complex Stiefel manifolds is discussed. We develop methodology and apply it here for unitary gates as a testing example. The next step is to apply the method for generation of non-unitary processes and to multi-level quantum systems.

Reachable sets for two-level open quantum systems driven by coherent and incoherent controls

Lev Vyacheslavovich Lokutsievskiy, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen

Abstract In this work, we study controllability in the set of all density matrices for a two-level open quantum system driven by coherent and incoherent controls. In Pechen (2011 Phys. Rev. A 84 042106) an approximate controllability, i.e. controllability with some precision, was shown for generic N -level open quantum systems driven by coherent and incoherent controls. However, the explicit formulation of this property, including the behavior of this precision as a function of transition frequencies and decoherence rates of the system, was not known. The present work provides a rigorous analytical study of reachable sets for two-level open quantum systems. First, it is shown that for N = 2 the presence of incoherent control does not affect the reachable set (while incoherent control may affect the time necessary to reach particular state). Second, the reachable set in the Bloch ball is described and it is shown that already just for one coherent control any point in the Bloch ball can be achieved with precision δ ∼ γ / ω , where γ is the decoherence rate and ω is the transition frequency. Typical values are δ ≲ 10 −3 that implies high accuracy of achieving any density matrix. Moreover, we show that most points in the Bloch ball can be exactly reached, except of two lacunae of size ∼ δ . For two coherent controls, the system is shown to be completely controllable in the set of all density matrices. Third, the reachable set as a function of the final time is found and shown to exhibit a non-trivial structure.
