Abstract

Abstract In this work we study how entanglement of purification (EoP) and the new quantity of “complexity of purification” are related to each other using theEP=EWconjecture. First, we consider two strips in the same side of a boundary and study the relationships between the entanglement of purification of this mixed state and the parameters of the system such as dimension, temperature, length of the strips and the distance between them. Next, using the same setup, we introduce two definitions for the complexity of mixed states, complexity of purification (CoP) and the interval volume (VI). We study their connections to other parameters similar to the EoP case. Then, we extend our study to more general examples of BTZ black holes solution in massive gravity, charged black holes and multipartite systems. Finally, we give various interpretations of our results using resource theories such as LOCC and also bit thread picture.

Bit threads and holographic entanglement of purification

Dong-Hui Du, Chong-Bin Chen, Fu-Wen Shu

Abstract The entanglement of purification (EoP), which measures the classical correlations and entanglement of a given mixed state, has been conjectured to be dual to the area of the minimal cross section of the entanglement wedge in holography. Using the surface-state correspondence, we propose a “bit thread” formulation of the EoP. With this formulation, proofs of some known properties of the EoP are performed. Moreover, we show that the quantum advantage of dense code (QAoDC), which reflects the increase in the rate of classical information transmission through quantum channel due to entanglement, also admits a flow interpretation. In this picture, we can prove the monogamy relation of QAoDC with the EoP for tripartite states. We also derive a new lower bound for S(AB) in terms of QAoDC, which is tighter than the one given by the Araki-Lieb inequality.

Holographic entanglement of purification for thermofield double states and thermal quench

Run-Qiu Yang, Cheng-Yong Zhang, Wen-Ming Li

Abstract We explore the properties of holographic entanglement of purification (EoP) for two disjoint strips in the Schwarzschild-AdS black brane and the Vaidya-AdS black brane spacetimes. For two given strips on the same boundary of Schwarzschild-AdS spacetime, there is an upper bound of the separation beyond which the holographic EoP will always vanish no matter how wide the strips are. In the case that two strips are in the two boundaries of the spacetime respectively, we find that the holographic EoP exists only when the strips are wide enough. If the width is finite, the EoP can be nonzero in a finite time region. For thermal quench case, we find that the equilibrium time of holographic EoP is only sensitive to the width of strips, while that of the holographic mutual information is sensitive not only to the width of strips but also to their separation.

Subsystem complexity and holography

César A. Agón, Matthew Headrick, Brian G. Swingle

Abstract As a probe of circuit complexity in holographic field theories, we study sub-system analogues based on the entanglement wedge of the bulk quantities appearing in the “complexity = volume” and “complexity = action” conjectures. We calculate these quantities for one exterior region of an eternal static neutral or charged black hole in general dimensions, dual to a thermal state on one boundary with or without chemical potential respectively, as well as for a shock wave geometry. We then define several analogues of circuit complexity for mixed states, and use tensor networks to gain intuition about them. In the action approach, we find two possible cases depending on an ambiguity in the definition of the action associated with a counterterm. In one case, there is a promising qualitative match between the holographic action and what we call the purification complexity, the minimum number of gates required to prepare an arbitrary purification of the given mixed state. In the other case, the match is to what we call the basis complexity, the minimum number of gates required to prepare the given mixed state starting from a minimal complexity state with the same eigenvalue spectrum. One way to fix this ambiguity is to choose an action definition such that UV divergent part is positive, in which case the best match to the action result is the basis complexity. In contrast, the holographic volume does not appear to match any of our definitions of mixed-state complexity.

Holographic study of entanglement and complexity for mixed states

Ashis Saha, Sunandan Gangopadhyay

In this paper, we holographically quantify the entanglement and complexity for mixed states by following the prescription of purification. The bulk theory we consider in this work is a hyperscaling violating solution, characterized by two parameters, hyperscaling violating exponent $\ensuremath{\theta}$ and dynamical exponent $z$. This geometry is due to a nonrelativistic strongly coupled theory with hidden Fermi surfaces. We first compute the holographic analogy of entanglement of purification, denoted as the minimal area of the entanglement wedge cross section and observe the effects of $z$ and $\ensuremath{\theta}$. Then in order to probe the mixed state complexity we compute the mutual complexity for the Banados Teitelboim Zanelli (BTZ) black hole and the hyperscaling violating geometry by incorporating the holographic subregion complexity conjecture. We carry this out for two disjoint subsystems separated by a distance and also when the subsystems are adjacent with subsystems making up the full system. Furthermore, various aspects of holographic entanglement entropy such as the entanglement Smarr relation, the Fisher information metric, and the butterfly velocity have also been discussed.

Bit thread, entanglement distillation, and entanglement of purification

Yi-Yu Lin, Jia-Rui Sun, Yuan Sun

We investigate the relations between bit thread, entanglement distillation, and entanglement of purification in the holographic framework. Specifically, we give a bit thread interpretation for the one-shot entanglement distillation (OSED) tensor network, which can be understood as reconstructing the geometric structure of the bulk spacetime from the entanglement information of the boundary quantum system through the ``surface growth scheme.'' Moreover, by showing that the holographic entanglement of purification (EoP) process can be regarded as a special case of our ``surface growth scheme,'' we naturally obtain the bit thread interpretation of the holographic EoP in our framework, which turns out to be different from the existing interpretations. Since our interpretation for holographic EoP is obtained in a more general and physical framework, the advantage of our version is that it is more natural, and possibly more reasonable, to reflect the real physical entanglement structures.

Holographic Study of Entanglement of Purification for Excited States

Mohammad Sahraei, Mohammad Javad Vasli, M. Reza Mohammadi Mozaffar +1 more

We evaluate the entanglement of purification (EoP), which measures correlations between two subsystems, for excited states dual to asymptotically AdS spacetimes using holography. In this framework EoP is given by the minimal cross sectional area of an entanglement wedge. We carry out a perturbative analysis for calculating EoP between the vacuum and other states for a symmetric configuration consisting of two disjoint strips and obtain analytical results in the specific regimes of the parameter space. In particular, when the states described by purely gravitational excitations in the bulk we find that the leading correction to EoP is negative and the correlation between the subregions decreases. We also study other types of excitations upon adding the extra matter fields including current and scalar condensate. For the latter class of excitations, we find that the variation of EoP is negative, when the dimension of the scalar operator respects the unitarity bound. Finally, we discuss how these results are consistent with the behavior of other correlation measures including the holographic mutual information.
