Emergent Glassy Dynamics in a Quantum Dimer Model

Abstract

We consider the quench dynamics of a two-dimensional quantum dimer model and determine the role of its kinematic constraints. We interpret the nonequilibrium dynamics in terms of the underlying equilibrium phase transitions consisting of a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition between a columnar ordered valence bond solid (VBS) and a valence bond liquid (VBL), as well as a first-order transition between a staggered VBS and the VBL. We find that quenches from a columnar VBS are ergodic and both order parameters and spatial correlations quickly relax to their thermal equilibrium. By contrast, the staggered side of the first-order transition does not display thermalization on numerically accessible timescales. Based on the model's kinematic constraints, we uncover a mechanism of relaxation that rests on emergent, highly detuned multidefect processes in a staggered background, which gives rise to slow, glassy dynamics at low temperatures even in the thermodynamic limit.

Quench dynamics of the 2dXYmodel

Asja Jelić, Leticia F. Cugliandolo

We investigate the out of equilibrium dynamics of the two-dimensional XY model when cooled across the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) phase transition using different protocols. We focus on the evolution of the growing correlation length and the density of topological defects (vortices). By using Monte Carlo simulations we first determine the time and temperature dependence of the growing correlation length after an infinitely rapid quench from above the transition temperature to the quasi-long-range order region. The functional form is consistent with a logarithmic correction to the diffusive law and it serves to validate dynamic scaling in this problem. This analysis clarifies the different dynamic roles played by bound and free vortices. We then revisit the Kibble–Zurek mechanism in thermal phase transitions in which the disordered state is plagued with topological defects. We provide a theory of quenching rate dependence in systems with the BKT-type transition that goes beyond the equilibrium scaling arguments. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for a host of physical systems with vortex excitations, including planar ferromagnets and liquid crystals.

Periodic quenches across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition

Kate Brown, Thomas Bland, P. Comaron +1 more

The quenched dynamics of an ultracold homogeneous atomic two-dimensional Bose gas subjected to periodic quenches across the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition are discussed.Specifically, we address the effect of periodic cycling of the effective atomic interaction strength between a thermal disordered state above and a highly ordered state below the critical BKT interaction strength, by means of numerical simulations of the stochastic projected Gross-Pitaevskii equation.Probing the emerging dynamics as a function of the frequency of sinusoidal driving from low to high frequencies reveals diverse dynamical features, including phase-lagged quasiadiabatic reversible condensate formation, resonant excitation consistent with an intrinsic system relaxation timescale, and the gradual establishment of dynamically recurring or time-averaged nonequilibrium states with enhanced coherence, which are neither condensed nor thermal. Our study paves the way for experimental observation of such driven nonequilibrium ultracold superfluid states.

Example of a first-order Néel to valence-bond-solid transition in two dimensions

Arnab Sen, Anders W. Sandvik

We consider the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interaction $J$ and an additional multispin interaction ${Q}_{3}$ on the square lattice. The ${Q}_{3}$ term consists of three bond-singlet projectors and is chosen to favor the formation of a valence-bond solid (VBS) where the valence bonds (singlet pairs) form a staggered pattern. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition from the N\'eel state to the VBS as a function of ${Q}_{3}/J$. We study the model using quantum Monte Carlo (stochastic series expansion) simulations. The N\'eel-VBS transition in this case is strongly first order in nature, in contrast to similar previously studied models with continuous transitions into columnar VBS states. The qualitatively different transitions illustrate the important role of an emerging $U(1)$ symmetry in the latter case, which is not possible in the present model due to the staggered VBS pattern (which does not allow local fluctuations necessary to rotate the local VBS order parameter).

Glassy dynamics of a two-dimensional non-disordered spin model

Juan P. Garrahan

We study the low temperature dynamics of a two dimensional spin system, which displays glassiness despite the absence of disorder or frustration, and is an explicit realization of the “hierarchically constrained dynamics” scenario for glassy systems. We solve exactly the statics of the model, and study in detail the dynamical behavior of one-time and two-time quantities.

Quantum kinetics of quenched two-dimensional Bose superfluids

Clément Duval, Nicolas Cherroret

We study theoretically the nonequilibrium dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) uniform Bose superfluid following a quantum quench, from its short-time (prethermal) coherent dynamics to its long-time thermalization. Using a quantum hydrodynamic description combined with a Keldysh field formalism, we derive quantum kinetic equations for the low-energy phononic excitations of the system and characterize both their normal and anomalous momentum distributions. We apply this formalism to the interaction quench of a 2D Bose gas and study the ensuing dynamics of its quantum structure factor and coherence function, both recently measured experimentally. Our results indicate that, in two dimensions, a description in terms of independent quasiparticles becomes quickly inaccurate and should be systematically questioned when dealing with nonequilibrium scenarios.

Quantum phase transitions around the staggered valence-bond solid

Cenke Xu, Leon Balents

Motivated by recent numerical results, we study the quantum phase transitions between ${Z}_{2}$ spin-liquid, N\'eel-ordered, and various valence-bond solid (VBS) states on the honeycomb and square lattices, with emphasis on the staggered VBS. In contrast to the well-understood columnar VBS order, the staggered VBS is not described by an $\mathit{XY}$-order parameter with ${Z}_{N}$ anisotropy close to these quantum phase transitions. Instead, we demonstrate that on the honeycomb lattice, the staggered VBS is more appropriately described as an O(3)- or CP(2)-order parameter with cubic anisotropy, while on the square lattice it is described by an O(4)- or CP(3)-order parameter.
