Exact factorization-based density functional theory of electron-phonon systems

Abstract

Density functional theory is generalized to incorporate electron-phonon coupling. A Kohn-Sham equation yielding the electronic density ${n}_{U}(\mathbf{r})$, a conditional probability density depending parametrically on the phonon normal mode amplitudes $U={{U}_{\mathbf{q}\ensuremath{\lambda}}}$, is coupled to the nuclear Schr\"odinger equation of the exact factorization method. The phonon modes are defined from the harmonic expansion of the nuclear Schr\"odinger equation. A nonzero Berry curvature on nuclear configuration space affects the phonon modes, showing that the potential energy surface alone is generally not sufficient to define the phonons. An orbital-dependent functional approximation for the nonadiabatic exchange-correlation energy reproduces the leading-order nonadiabatic electron-phonon-induced band structure renormalization in the Fr\"ohlich model.

Coupled Kohn-Sham equations for electrons and phonons

C. Y. Wang, Müller, T., Sangeeta Sharma +2 more

This work establishes the algebraic structure of the Kohn-Sham equations to be solved in a density formulation of electron and phonon dynamics, including the superconducting order parameter. A Bogoliubov transform is required to diagonalize both the fermionic and bosonic Kohn-Sham Hamiltonians since they both represent a non-interacting quantum field theory. The Bogoliubov transform for phonons is non-Hermitian in the general case, and the corresponding time-evolution is non-unitary. Several sufficient conditions for ensuring that the bosonic eigenvalues are real are provided and a practical method for solving the system is described. Finally, we produce a set of approximate mean-field potentials which are functionals of the electronic and phononic density matrices and depend on the electron-phonon vertex.

Inverse Kohn–Sham Equations Derived from the Density Equation Theory

T. Kato, Katsuyuki Nobusada, Shinji Saito

We formulate the inverse Kohn–Sham equations based on the density equation theory. The present formulation relies on neither action functionals nor force balance equation, but is constructed by comparing the first-order density equation for the electron interacting real system and that for the electron non-interacting Kohn–Sham system. The derived inverse Kohn–Sham integral equation requires information of an exact ground-state electron density to calculate an exact Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state and it requires an exact time-dependent electron density and a time-derivative of the exact time-dependent first-order density matrix to calculate an exact time-dependent Kohn–Sham potential. A possible algorithm to construct the Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state is suggested as well as a solution algorithm for the time-dependent inverse Kohn–Sham problem without resorting to any approximations. These two solution algorithms, in combination, suggest a way to perform an exact time-dependent density functional calculation as a predictive method.

Time-dependent Kohn-Sham formalism

Andreas Görling

Within density-functional theory a time-dependent perturbation theory is derived that yields exact orbital-dependent expressions for the time-dependent exchange-correlation potential in the form of a perturbation series. This leads to an exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham scheme based on perturbation theory. In first order an ``exchange-only'' Kohn-Sham procedure is obtained, that is a generalization of a recently presented time-dependent optimized potential method. The exact, in higher order, but quite complicated expressions for the exchange-correlation potential may serve as a starting point for the construction of approximate exchange-correlation potentials. An adiabatic connection or coupling constant path between a time-dependent physical system and its corresponding Kohn-Sham system is introduced.

A Rigorous Extension of the Kohn-Sham Equation for Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Koichi Kusakabe

By introducing a set of auxiliary equations representing a many-body system, we have derived an extension of the Kohn-Sham scheme for the density functional theory. These equations consist of a Kohn-Sham-type equation determining single-particle orbitals and an eigen-value equation for an effective many-body problem. A variational method similar to the Kohn-Sham technique was utilized to derive effective interactions as well as effective potentials without artificial substitution of a Hubbard-type interaction and a mean-field correction in the energy functional. The second equation is described by an effective many-body Hamiltonian with both 2-body interactions and mean-field terms. Rigorous formulation of the extended Kohn-Sham equation is also given in accordance with the Hadjisavvas-Theophilou formulation. Our formulation can be interpreted as a way to define models of the strongly correlated electron systems, e.g. the Hubbard model

Expressions for the Exchange Correlation Potential and Exchange Correlation Functional of Kohn--Sham Density Functional Theory

James P. Finley

The State--Specific Kohn--Sham Density Functional Theory [arXiv:physics/0506037] is used to derive the Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation potential $\vxc$ and exchange-correlation energy $\Eco$ as explicit functionals of $v_s$ and $ϕ_1$, where $v_s$ is the local, one-body potential from the Kohn--Sham equations, and $ϕ_1$ is the spinless one-particle density matrix from the Kohn--Sham noninteracting state, say $|ϕ_1\ran$. In other words, $|ϕ_1\ran$ is the ground state eigenfunction of the noninteracting Schrödinger equation with the one-body potential $v_s$. For simplicity, we only consider noninteracting states that are closed-shell states and interacting states that are nondegenerate, singlet ground-states.

Model Hamiltonian for strongly correlated systems: Systematic, self-consistent, and unique construction

Ryan Requist, Eberhard K. U. Gross

An interacting lattice model describing the subspace spanned by a set of strongly correlated bands is rigorously coupled to density functional theory to enable ab initio calculations of geometric and topological material properties. The strongly correlated subspace is identified from the occupation number band structure as opposed to a mean-field energy band structure. The self-consistent solution of the many-body model Hamiltonian and a generalized Kohn-Sham equation exactly incorporates momentum-dependent and crystal-symmetric correlations into electronic structure calculations in a way that does not rely on a separation of energy scales. Calculations for a multiorbital Hubbard model demonstrate that the theory accurately reproduces the many-body macroscopic polarization.
