Abstract

Injecting a sufficiently large energy density into an isolated many-particle system prepared in a state with long-range order will lead to the melting of the order over time. Detailed information about this process can be derived from the quantum mechanical probability distribution of the order parameter. We study this process for the paradigmatic case of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain. We determine the full quantum mechanical distribution function of the staggered subsystem magnetization as a function of time after a quantum quench from the classical N\'eel state. We establish the existence of an interesting regime at intermediate times that is characterized by a very broad probability distribution. Based on our findings we propose a simple general physical picture of how long-range order melts.

Dynamics of the order parameter statistics in the long range Ising model

Nishan Ranabhat, Mario Collura

We study the relaxation of the local ferromagnetic order in the transverse field quantum Ising chain with power-law decaying interactions \sim 1/r^\alpha ∼ 1 / r α . We prepare the system in the GHZ state and study the time evolution of the probability distribution function (PDF) of the order parameter within a block of \ell ℓ when quenching the transverse field. The model is known to support long range order at finite temperature for \alpha\leq 2.0 α ≤ 2.0 . In this regime, quasi-localized topological magnetic defects are expected to strongly affect the equilibration of the full probability distribution. We highlight different dynamical regimes where gaussification mechanism may be slowed down by confinement and eventually breaks. We further study the PDF dynamics induced by changing the effective dimensionality of the system; we mimic this by quenching the range of the interactions. As a matter of fact, the behavior of the system crucially depends on the value of \alpha α governing the unitary evolution.

Full counting statistics in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain

Mario Collura, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Stefan Groha

Abstract The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain exhibits a quantum critical regime characterized by quasi long-range magnetic order at zero temperature. We quantify the strength of quantum fluctuations in the ground state by determining the probability distributions of the components of the (staggered) subsystem magnetization. Some of these exhibit scaling and the corresponding universal scaling functions can be determined by free fermion methods and by exploiting a relation with the boundary sine-Gordon model.

Out-of-equilibrium full counting statistics in Gaussian theories of quantum magnets

Riccardo Senese, Jacob H. Robertson, Fabian H. L. Eßler

We consider the probability distributions of the subsystem (staggered) magnetization in ordered and disordered models of quantum magnets in D dimensions. We focus on Heisenberg antiferromagnets and long-range transverse-field Ising models as particular examples. By employing a range of self-consistent time-dependent mean-field approximations in conjunction with Holstein-Primakoff, Dyson-Maleev, Schwinger boson and modified spin-wave theory representations we obtain results in thermal equilibrium as well as during non-equilibrium evolution after quantum quenches. To extract probability distributions we derive a simple formula for the characteristic function of generic quadratic observables in any Gaussian theory of bosons.

Relaxation of the order-parameter statistics in the Ising quantum chain

Mario Collura

We study the out-of-equilibrium probability distribution function of the local order parameter in the transverse field Ising quantum chain. Starting from a fully polarised state, the relaxation of the ferromagnetic order is analysed: we obtain a full analytical description of the late-time stationary distribution by means of a remarkable relation to the partition function of a 3-states classical model. Accordingly, depending on the phase whereto the post-quench Hamiltonian belongs, the probability distribution may locally retain memories of the initial long-range order. When quenching deep in the broken-symmetry phase, we show that the stationary order-parameter statistics is indeed related to that of the ground state. We highlight this connection by inspecting the ground-state equilibrium properties, where we propose an effective description based on the block-diagonal approximation of the n n -point spin correlation functions.

Many-body localization and thermalization in the full probability distribution function of observables

Elena Canovi, Davide Rossini, Rosario Fazio +2 more

We investigate the relation between thermalization following a quantum quench and many-body localization in quasi-particle space in terms of the long-time full distribution function of physical observables. In particular, expanding on our recent work (Canovi et al 2011 Phys. Rev. B 83 094431), we focus on the long-time behavior of an integrable XXZ chain subject to an integrability-breaking perturbation. After a characterization of the breaking of integrability and the associated localization/delocalization transition using the level spacing statistics and the properties of the eigenstates, we study the effect of integrability breaking on the asymptotic state after a quantum quench of the anisotropy parameter, looking at the behavior of the full probability distribution of the transverse and longitudinal magnetization of a subsystem. We compare the resulting distributions with those obtained in equilibrium at an effective temperature set by the initial energy. We find that, while the long-time distribution functions appear to always agree qualitatively with the equilibrium ones, quantitative agreement is obtained only when integrability is fully broken and the relevant eigenstates are diffusive in quasi-particle space.

Relaxation after quantum quenches in the spin- 1 2 Heisenberg XXZ chain

Maurizio Fagotti, Mario Collura, Fabian H. L. Eßler +1 more

We consider the time evolution after quantum quenches in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg XXZ quantum spin chain with Ising-type anisotropy. The time evolution of short-distance spin-spin correlation functions is studied by numerical tensor network techniques for a variety of initial states, including N\'eel and Majumdar-Ghosh states and the ground state of the XXZ chain at large values of the anisotropy. The various correlators appear to approach stationary values, which are found to be in good agreement with the results of exact calculations of stationary expectation values in appropriate generalized Gibbs ensembles. In particular, our analysis shows how symmetries of the post-quench Hamiltonian that are broken by particular initial states are restored at late times.
