Abstract

We study the effect of the non-Gaussian average over the random couplings in a complex version of the celebrated Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Using a Polchinski-like equation and random tensor Gaussian universality, we show that the effect of this non-Gaussian averaging leads to a modification of the variance of the Gaussian distribution of couplings at leading order in $N$. We then derive the form of the effective action to all orders. An explicit computation of the modification of the variance in the case of a quartic perturbation is performed for both the complex SYK model mentioned above and the SYK generalization proposed in D. Gross and V. Rosenhaus [J. High Energy Phys. 02 (2017) 093].

Combinatorial aspects of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Matteo Laudonio, Romain Pascalie, Adrian Tanasă

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a model of $q$ interacting fermions whose large N limit is dominated by melonic graphs. In this review we first present a diagrammatic proof of that result by direct, combinatorial analysis of its Feynman graphs. Gross and Rosenhaus have then proposed a generalization of the SYK model which involves fermions with different flavors. In terms of Feynman graphs, these flavors can be seen as reminiscent of the colors used in random tensor theory. Applying modern tools from random tensors to such a colored SYK model, all leading and next-to-leading orders diagrams of the 2-point and 4-point functions in the large $N$ expansion can be identified. We then study the effect of non-Gaussian average over the random couplings in a complex, colored version of the SYK model. Using a Polchinski-like equation and random tensor Gaussian universality, we show that the effect of this non-Gaussian averaging leads to a modification of the variance of the Gaussian distribution of couplings at leading order in $N$. We then derive the form of the effective action to all orders.

The SYK model and random tensors: Gaussian universality

Thomas Krajewski, Matteo Laudonio, Romain Pascalie +1 more

The SYK model involves N Majorana fermions in 1+0 dimensions with quenched Gaussian dis- order and proves to be exactly solvable in the large N limit at strong coupling. It has been initially proposed by Sachdev and Ye as a model of condensed matter and later gained some interest as a toy model of AdS/CFT correspondence, thanks to the work of Kitaev. On the other side, random tensors are generalisations of random matrices to objets that carry more than two indices. It turns out that the SYK model and random tensors involve a special class of Feynman graphs known as "melons". We will briefly review both constructions. Then, we will show how non Gaussian disorder can be reduced to a Gaussian one, treating the coupling as a random tensor, thanks to Gurau’s Gaussian universality result.

Disorder in the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev model

Yizhuang Liu, Maciej A. Nowak, Ismail Zahed A

We give qualitative arguments in support of the mesoscopic nature of the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model in the regime with q2/N≪1 with N Majorana particles coupled by antisymmetric and random interactions of range q. Using a stochastic deformation of the SYK model, we show that its characteristic determinant obeys a viscid Burgers equation with a small spectral viscosity in the regime with q/N=1/2. In particular, the stochastic evolution of the SYK model can be mapped exactly onto that of random matrix theory, with universal Airy oscillations at the edges.

Random coupling model of turbulence as a classical Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Xu-Yao Hu, Vladimir Rosenhaus

We point out that a classical analog of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, a solvable model of quantum many-body chaos, was studied long ago in the turbulence literature. Motivated by the Navier-Stokes equation in the turbulent regime and the nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing plasma turbulence, in which there is mixing between many different modes, the random coupling model has a Gaussian-random coupling between any four of a large number N of modes. The model was solved in the 1960s, before the introduction of large-N path-integral techniques, using a method referred to as the direct interaction approximation. We use the path integral to derive the effective action for the model. The large-N saddle gives an integral equation for the two-point function, which is very similar to the corresponding equation in the SYK model. The connection between the SYK model and the random coupling model may, on the one hand, provide new physical contexts in which to realize the SYK model and, on the other hand, suggest new models of turbulence and techniques for studying them.

A note on Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev like model without random coupling

Takahiro Nishinaka, Seiji Terashima

We study a description of the large N limit of the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model in terms of quantum mechanics without quenched disorder. Instead of random couplings, we introduce massive scalar fields coupled to fermions, and study a small mass limit of the theory. We show that, under a certain condition, the correlation functions of fermions reproduce those of the SYK model with a temperature dependent coupling constant in the large N limit. We also discuss a supersymmetric generalization of our quantum mechanical model. As a byproduct, we develop an efficient way of estimating the large N behavior of correlators in the SYK model.

Extension of the SYK model to 1+1 dimensions in the strong coupling limit

Andy A. V. Yunge, Alessandro De Martino, A. Tagliacozzo

We study a $1+1$ (space-time)-dimensional extension of the $0+1$-dimensional Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model for $N$ Majorana fermions, with random all-to-all quartic interactions, averaged over disorder. At large interaction couplings and large $N$, the conformal symmetry of the effective action emerges, which is not broken spontaneously as in the original $0+1$ SYK model. Two-point correlators are obtained from a coupling expansion of the Schwinger-Dyson equations. For $N=4$, the model can be mapped onto complex fermions and solved exactly via the bosonization technique, featuring two branches of excitations: a gapped ``pseudocharge'' mode and a gapless ``pseudospin'' mode. We give an approximate analytic form of the two-point correlators at large distances and zero temperature for $N=4$, which is adopted heuristically to evaluate an approximation to the large-$N$ free energy in the zero temperature limit, numerically. The fact that this energy displays an absolute minimum at a finite value of the gap, though in a restricted range of parameters, suggests that a gapped branch of excitations is also present in our extension of the model at least in that range of parameters.
