Abstract

We study a description of the large N limit of the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model in terms of quantum mechanics without quenched disorder. Instead of random couplings, we introduce massive scalar fields coupled to fermions, and study a small mass limit of the theory. We show that, under a certain condition, the correlation functions of fermions reproduce those of the SYK model with a temperature dependent coupling constant in the large N limit. We also discuss a supersymmetric generalization of our quantum mechanical model. As a byproduct, we develop an efficient way of estimating the large N behavior of correlators in the SYK model.

Supersymmetric Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Wenbo Fu, Davide Gaiotto A, JUAN M. MALDACENA +1 more

We discuss a supersymmetric generalization of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. These are quantum mechanical models involving $N$ Majorana fermions. The supercharge is given by a polynomial expression in terms of the Majorana fermions with random coefficients. The Hamiltonian is the square of the supercharge. The $\mathcal{N}=1$ model with a single supercharge has unbroken supersymmetry at large $N$, but nonperturbatively spontaneously broken supersymmetry in the exact theory. We analyze the model by looking at the large $N$ equation, and also by performing numerical computations for small values of $N$. We also compute the large $N$ spectrum of ``singlet'' operators, where we find a structure qualitatively similar to the ordinary SYK model. We also discuss an $\mathcal{N}=2$ version. In this case, the model preserves supersymmetry in the exact theory and we can compute a suitably weighted Witten index to count the number of ground states, which agrees with the large $N$ computation of the entropy. In both cases, we discuss the supersymmetric generalizations of the Schwarzian action which give the dominant effects at low energies.

Combinatorial aspects of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Matteo Laudonio, Romain Pascalie, Adrian Tanasă

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a model of $q$ interacting fermions whose large N limit is dominated by melonic graphs. In this review we first present a diagrammatic proof of that result by direct, combinatorial analysis of its Feynman graphs. Gross and Rosenhaus have then proposed a generalization of the SYK model which involves fermions with different flavors. In terms of Feynman graphs, these flavors can be seen as reminiscent of the colors used in random tensor theory. Applying modern tools from random tensors to such a colored SYK model, all leading and next-to-leading orders diagrams of the 2-point and 4-point functions in the large $N$ expansion can be identified. We then study the effect of non-Gaussian average over the random couplings in a complex, colored version of the SYK model. Using a Polchinski-like equation and random tensor Gaussian universality, we show that the effect of this non-Gaussian averaging leads to a modification of the variance of the Gaussian distribution of couplings at leading order in $N$. We then derive the form of the effective action to all orders.

Family of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models motivated by experimental considerations

Étienne Lantagne-Hurtubise, Chengshu Li, Marcel Franz

Several condensed-matter platforms have been proposed recently to realize the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in their low-energy limit. In these proposed realizations, the characteristic SYK behavior is expected to occur under certain assumptions about the underlying physical system that (i) render all bilinear terms small compared to four-fermion interactions and (ii) ensure that the coupling constants are approximately all-to-all and independent random variables. In this work we explore, both analytically and numerically, the family of models that arises when we relax these assumptions in ways motivated by real physical systems. By relaxing (i) and allowing large bilinear terms, we obtain a novel, exactly solvable cousin of the $\mathrm{SYK}$ model. It exhibits two distinct phases separated by a quantum phase transition characterized by a power-law, ${\ensuremath{\sim}|\ensuremath{\omega}|}^{\ensuremath{-}1/3}$, scaling of the low-energy spectral density, despite being a noninteracting model. By relaxing (ii), we obtain close relatives of the $\mathrm{SYK}$ model which exhibit interesting behaviors, including a chaotic non-Fermi liquid phase with continuously varying fermion scaling dimension, and a phase transition to a disordered Fermi liquid as a function of interaction range and disorder length scale.

SYK and SYK-like Models

Pyry Kuusela

In this thesis, we discuss the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and tensor models with similar properties. The SYK model is a quantum field theoretical model describing N interacting fermions, whose coupling constants are drawn from a Gaussian ensemble. Noteworthy properties of the SYK model include that it is analytically solvable in the large N limit, that it exhibits conformal symmetry at low energies and that it is maximally chaotic. These properties are remarkably similar to those of a 1 + 1 dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. It has been conjectured the SYK model is a holographic dual to the black hole. We introduce a set of Feynman rules for the SYK model. Using these rules, we show that in the large N limit the diagrams that contribute to the two-point function are all so-called iterated melonic diagrams. This allows us to derive a Schwinger-Dyson equation for the two-point function, which, in turn, can be solved exactly in the infrared limit. We also consider the four-point function. In the large N limit, the leading-order correction to the four-point function is given by so-called ladder diagrams. This allows us to derive an explicit expression for the four-point function. The SYK model can be generalized in a few different ways. In this thesis, we consider the generalization where the fermions act through q-fold interactions instead of quartic interactions present in the original SYK model. In particular, considerable simplifications can be achieved in the q → ∞ limit or q = 2 case, which we study. While the SYK model has many interesting properties, its random couplings limit its usability especially as a dual to a Schwarzschild black hole. We therefore also consider tensor models which do not have this drawback but manage to preserve the interesting properties of the SYK model. In the last chapter, we briefly inspect the chaotic behaviour of the SYK and tensor models and derive Lyapunov exponent for them. It can be shown that the expression saturates an upper bound for Lyapunov exponents of a large class of quantum systems, including large N systems.

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model and Matter Without Quasiparticles

Wenbo Fu

This thesis is devoted to the study of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models, which describe matter without quasiparticles. The SYK model is an exactly solvable model that is hoped to bring insights into the understanding of strongly correlated materials.\nThe main part discusses different aspects of SYK models. Chapter 2 presents numerical studies of the SYK models, shows its non-Fermi liquid nature and verifies the analytical predictions on two-point function and thermal entropies. Chapter 3 considers the thermodynamic and transport properties of the complex SYK models in higher dimensional generalizations, we show some universal relations obtained from SYK models which are consistent with holographic theories. Chapter 4 discusses a supersymmetric generalization of the SYK model. We show a different a scaling from the normal SYK model both analytically and numerically. We also discuss a different origin of the extensive zero temperature entropy in $\\mathcal{N}=2$ theory. Chapter 5 considers a continuous set of boson-fermion SYK models with a tunable low-energy scaling dimension. From the explicit computation of out of time ordered correlators, we find the theory is less chaotic in the free fermion limit. Chapter 6 describes the phases of a solvable $t$-$J$ model of electrons with an SYK-like form. We find a $\\mathbb{Z}_2$ fractionalization picture where the deconfined phase is similar to the pseudo gap regime of underdoped cuprates, while the `quasi-Higgs' phase is similar to the metallic phase of overdoped cuprates.
