Abstract

Quantum splines are curves in a Hilbert space or, equivalently, in the corresponding Hilbert projective space, which generalize the notion of Riemannian cubic splines to the quantum domain. In this paper, we present a generalization of this concept to general density matrices with a Hamiltonian approach and using a geometrical formulation of quantum mechanics. Our main goal is to formulate an optimal control problem for a nonlinear system on [Formula: see text] which corresponds to the variational problem of quantum splines. The corresponding Hamiltonian equations and interpolation conditions are derived. The results are illustrated with some examples and the corresponding quantum splines are computed with the implementation of a suitable iterative algorithm.

Existence of Quantum Splines via Fourth-Order Gradient Flows

Chun-Chi Lin, Yang-Kai Lue, Dung The Tran

We establish a rigorous existence theory for the quantum splines introduced by Brody, Holm, and Meier in Physical Review Letters (2012). These curves arise as solutions of a variational problem on the unitary group describing optimally controlled quantum evolutions. By formulating the problem within a geometric gradient flow framework for Riemannian spline interpolation, we construct a well-posed fourth order evolution whose asymptotic limits realize the desired quantum splines. The analysis requires adapting the variational structure to boundary conditions dictated by the physical model, which are not directly amenable to the setting in our recently developed framework for gradient flows of Riemannian spline interpolation. We show that, despite these difficulties, the modified system admits a rigorous analytical treatment, yielding both existence and a constructive procedure for generating quantum splines. Our results provide a mathematical foundation for the variational description of smooth quantum control trajectories and clarify the analytical structure underlying their formation.

Quantum Splines

Dorje C. Brody, Darryl D. Holm, David M. Meier

A quantum spline is a smooth curve parametrized by time in the space of unitary transformations, whose associated orbit on the space of pure states traverses a designated set of quantum states at designated times, such that the trace norm of the time rate of change of the associated Hamiltonian is minimized. The solution to the quantum spline problem is obtained, and is applied in an example that illustrates quantum control of coherent states. An efficient numerical scheme for computing quantum splines is discussed and implemented in the examples.

Quantum Riemannian Cubics with Obstacle Avoidance for Quantum Geometric Model Predictive Control

Leonardo Colombo

We propose a geometric model predictive control framework for quantum systems subject to smoothness and state constraints. By formulating quantum state evolution intrinsically on the projective Hilbert space, we penalize covariant accelerations to generate smooth trajectories in the form of Riemannian cubics, while incorporating state-dependent constraints through potential functions. A structure-preserving variational discretization enables receding-horizon implementation, and a Lyapunov-type stability result is established for the closed-loop system. The approach is illustrated on the Bloch sphere for a two-level quantum system, providing a viable pathway toward predictive feedback control of constrained quantum dynamics.

On the controllability of quantum-mechanical systems

Garng M. Huang, TZYH JONG TARN, John W. Clark

The systems-theoretic concept of controllability is elaborated for quantum-mechanical systems, sufficient conditions being sought under which the state vector ψ can be guided in time to a chosen point in the Hilbert space ℋ of the system. The Schrödinger equation for a quantum object influenced by adjustable external fields provides a state-evolution equation which is linear in ψ and linear in the external controls (thus a bilinear control system). For such systems the existence of a dense analytic domain 𝒟ω in the sense of Nelson, together with the assumption that the Lie algebra associated with the system dynamics gives rise to a tangent space of constant finite dimension, permits the adaptation of the geometric approach developed for finite-dimensional bilinear and nonlinear control systems. Conditions are derived for global controllability on the intersection of 𝒟ω with a suitably defined finite-dimensional submanifold of the unit sphere Sℋ in ℋ. Several soluble examples are presented to illuminate the general theoretical results.

Geometric Hamiltonian formulation of quantum mechanics in complex projective spaces

Davide Pastorello

In finite dimension (at least), Quantum Mechanics can be formulated as a proper Hamiltonian theory where a notion of phase space is given by the projective space P(H) constructed on the Hilbert space H of the considered quantum theory. It is well-known P(H) can be equipped with a structure of Kähler manifold, in particular we have a symplectic form and a Poisson structure; Quantum dynamics can be described in terms of a Hamiltonian vector field on P(H). In this paper, exploiting the notion and properties of so-called frame functions, I describe a general prescription for associating quantum observables to real functions on P(H), classical-like observables, and quantum states to probability densities on P(H), Liouville densities, in order to obtain a complete and meaningful Hamiltonian formulation of a finite-dimensional quantum theory.
