Quantum Splines

Abstract

A quantum spline is a smooth curve parametrized by time in the space of unitary transformations, whose associated orbit on the space of pure states traverses a designated set of quantum states at designated times, such that the trace norm of the time rate of change of the associated Hamiltonian is minimized. The solution to the quantum spline problem is obtained, and is applied in an example that illustrates quantum control of coherent states. An efficient numerical scheme for computing quantum splines is discussed and implemented in the examples.

A general framework for quantum splines

L. Abrunheiro, M. Camarinha, Jesús Clemente-Gallardo +2 more

Quantum splines are curves in a Hilbert space or, equivalently, in the corresponding Hilbert projective space, which generalize the notion of Riemannian cubic splines to the quantum domain. In this paper, we present a generalization of this concept to general density matrices with a Hamiltonian approach and using a geometrical formulation of quantum mechanics. Our main goal is to formulate an optimal control problem for a nonlinear system on [Formula: see text] which corresponds to the variational problem of quantum splines. The corresponding Hamiltonian equations and interpolation conditions are derived. The results are illustrated with some examples and the corresponding quantum splines are computed with the implementation of a suitable iterative algorithm.

Existence of Quantum Splines via Fourth-Order Gradient Flows

Chun-Chi Lin, Yang-Kai Lue, Dung The Tran

We establish a rigorous existence theory for the quantum splines introduced by Brody, Holm, and Meier in Physical Review Letters (2012). These curves arise as solutions of a variational problem on the unitary group describing optimally controlled quantum evolutions. By formulating the problem within a geometric gradient flow framework for Riemannian spline interpolation, we construct a well-posed fourth order evolution whose asymptotic limits realize the desired quantum splines. The analysis requires adapting the variational structure to boundary conditions dictated by the physical model, which are not directly amenable to the setting in our recently developed framework for gradient flows of Riemannian spline interpolation. We show that, despite these difficulties, the modified system admits a rigorous analytical treatment, yielding both existence and a constructive procedure for generating quantum splines. Our results provide a mathematical foundation for the variational description of smooth quantum control trajectories and clarify the analytical structure underlying their formation.

NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS OF QUANTUM MECHANICAL PROBLEMS USING THE BASIS-SPLINE COLLOCATION METHOD

D. O. Odero, Jerry L. Peacher, D H Madison

The time-dependent and time-independent Schrödinger equations have been numerically solved for several quantum mechanical problems with known analytical solutions using the basis-spline collocation algorithm. This algorithm has been demonstrated to be efficient and versatile. The results from these calculations illustrate the necessary numerical considerations required for solving both time-independent and time-dependent Schrödinger equations and form a basis that could be used for solving these and similar problems.

Quantum Brachistochrone Curves as Geodesics: Obtaining Accurate Minimum-Time Protocols for the Control of Quantum Systems

Xiaoting Wang, Michele Allegra, Kurt A. Jacobs +3 more

Most methods of optimal control cannot obtain accurate time-optimal protocols. The quantum brachistochrone equation is an exception, and has the potential to provide accurate time-optimal protocols for a wide range of quantum control problems. So far, this potential has not been realized, however, due to the inadequacy of conventional numerical methods to solve it. Here we show that the quantum brachistochrone problem can be recast as that of finding geodesic paths in the space of unitary operators. We expect this brachistochrone-geodesic connection to have broad applications, as it opens up minimal-time control to the tools of geometry. As one such application, we use it to obtain a fast numerical method to solve the brachistochrone problem, and apply this method to two examples demonstrating its power.

Trajectory tracking control of quantum systems

Shuang Cong, Jianxiu Liu

For quantum state trajectory tracking of density matrix in Liouville equation of quantum systems, with the help of concept in quantum system control, one can apply unitary transformation both to controlled system and free-evolutionary target system such as to change the time-variant and non-stationary target system into a stationary state. Therefore, the quantum state trajectory tracking problem becomes a steering one. State steering control law of the system transformed is designed by means of the Lyapunov stability theorem. Finally, numerical simulation experiments are given for a five-level energy quantum system. The comparison analysis of original system’s trajectory tracking with other method illustrates the advantage in control time of the method proposed.
