Abstract

Abstract We present a treatment of the triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model (TAFIM) based on a small number of elementary ideas common to statistical and solid-state physics. The TAFIM is represented as a reduced BCS model in one space, one (imaginary) time dimension. The representation is approximate for nonzero temperature, but allows quick derivation of asymptotically exact thermodynamic functions, and the divergence of the spin–spin correlation length. The fermionic representation is exact at zero temperature. We demonstrate the existence of a two-dimensional continuum of zero-temperature equilibrium macrostates characterized by satisfied bond fractions of the three different orientations, and calculate their entropy densities.

Triangular Ising antiferromagnet through a fermionic lens, part 1: free energy, zero-temperature phases and spin-spin correlation

Amir Nourhani, Vincent H. Crespi, Paul E. Lammert

We develop a fermionic formulation of the triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet (TIAFM) which is both calculationally convenient and intuitively appealing to imaginations steeped in conventional condensed matter physics. It is used to elucidate a variety of aspects of zero-temperature models. Cylindrical systems possess multiple distinguished by the number of circumferential satisfied bonds and by entropy density. On the plane, phases are labelled by densities of satisfied bonds of two different orientations. A local particle (semi)conservation law in the fermionic picture lies behind both these features as well as the classic power-law falloff of the spin-spin correlation function, which is also derived from the fermionic perspective.

Free-Fermion Models and Two-Dimensional Ising Models Under Zero Field and Imaginary Field i(π/2)kBT

De-Zhang Li, Xin Wang, Xiao‐Bao Yang

The Ising model is famous in condensed matter and statistical physics. In this work we present a free-fermion formulation of the two-dimensional classical Ising models on honeycomb, triangular and Kagomé lattices. Each Ising model is studied in the cases of a zero field and of an imaginary field i(π/2)kBT. We employ the decorated lattice technique, star-triangle transformation, and weak-graph expansion method to exactly map each Ising model in both cases into an eight-vertex model on the square lattice. The resulting vertex weights are shown to satisfy the free-fermion condition. In the zero-field case, each Ising model is an even free-fermion model. In the case of the imaginary field, the Ising model on the honeycomb lattice is an even free-fermion model, while the models on the triangular and Kagomé lattices are odd free-fermion models. We obtain the exact solution of the Kagomé lattice Ising model under the imaginary field i(π/2)kBT, a result not previously reported in the literature. We also show that the frustrated Ising models on the triangular and Kagomé lattices in the imaginary field still exhibit a non-zero residual entropy.

Ising antiferromagnet on a finite triangular lattice with free boundary conditions

Seung‐Yeon Kim

The exact integer values for the density of states of the Ising model on an equilateral triangular lattice with free boundary conditions are evaluated up to L = 24 spins on a side for the first time by using the microcanonical transfer matrix. The total number of states is 2 N s = 2300 ≈ 2.037 × 1090 for L = 24, where N s = L(L+1)/2 is the number of spins. Classifying all 2300 spin states according to their energy values is an enormous work. From the density of states, the exact partition function zeros in the complex temperature plane of the triangular-lattice Ising model are evaluated. Using the density of states and the partition function zeros, we investigate the properties of the triangularlattice Ising antiferromagnet. The scaling behavior of the ground-state entropy and the form of the correlation length at T = 0 are studied for the triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet with free boundary conditions. Also, the scaling behavior of the Fisher edge singularity is investigated.

Triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with a transverse field at zero temperature

K. A. Penson, Rémi Jullien, Pierre M. Pfeuty

The ground-state properties of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with Ising constant J in a transverse field h are investigated by a real-space renormalisation group method. For h=0, the known properties (energy=-J, finite entropy, no order) are recovered. For h not=0, the ground state remains highly degenerate, no order exists and the correlation function exhibits power-law behaviour up to (h/J)c approximately=1.41, where a phase transition takes place to a non-degenerate ground state. At h/J=(h/J)c, power-law behaviour is still observed for the correlation function but with a different exponent. Just above this region a gap Delta opens ( Delta approximately ((h/J)-(h/J)c)s with s=0.8) and the coherence length of the correlation function xi diverges as xi varies as ((h/J)-(h/J)c)-v with v=0.8. This corresponds to a three-dimensional classical model where h is replaced by the temperature. In this type of system, where the ground state has a degeneracy proportional to N2/3 it is predicted that a transition will occur at a finite T c to a low-temperature phase without order but with power-law behaviour for the correlation function, as for the classical XY model in two dimensions.

Some Exact Results on the Ising Antiferromagnet with General Spin S on the Triangular Lattice

D. Hajdukovć, B. U. Vujičić

Abstract A triangular lattice is considered which consists of five chains, i.e. a lattice with N = 5 × L sites. In the thermodynamic limit (L → ∞) and in the critical magnetic field, the exact ground‐state entropy for such a lattice is obtained as an explicit function of spin S. It is shown that this exact result for the lattice finite in one and infinite in the other dimension is an excellent approximation for the triangular lattice infinite in both dimensions.

Ising-Model Spin Correlations on the Triangular Lattice

John Stephenson

A Pfaffian representation, of the partition function of the triangular lattice is used to derive expressions for various two, four, and six spin correlations in terms of Pfaffians. The pair correlations along a diagonal are expressed as a Toeplitz determinant whose limiting form yields the spontaneous magnetization. At the ferromagnetic critical point the correlations decay as 1/r12 with approximately radial symmetry. At the antiferromagnetic zero point the ground state is highly degenerate—it has finite entropy—and on a given sublattice the pair correlations along a row decay as ε/r12, where ε=+ε0 on the sublattice containing the origin spin and ε≃−12ε0 on the other two sublattices. Finally, the perpendicular susceptibility, χ⊥, which depends on a finite number of correlations, is calculated; its ferromagnetic behavior is similar to that of the perpendicular susceptibilities of the quadratic and honeycomb lattices, but for an antiferromagnet χ⊥ diverges as 1/T at low temperatures.
