Abstract

Generation of ``squeezed'' light is a key technology for quantum information processing with continuous variables. In this field, continuous-variable quantum sampling is a promising candidate for near-term demonstration of quantum advantage. Despite many years of progress, though, a squeezed-light source suitable for quantum sampling has not been demonstrated. This work finally provides a blueprint for squeezed-light sources that can be used for large-scale quantum sampling applications, and thus will have an impact on advancing photonic quantum technology for practical deployment.

Integrated continuous-variable quantum light sources for quantum computing

Xuezhi Zhu, Siyu Ren, Yunyun Cao +1 more

Continuous-variable (CV) quantum light sources are the essential resource for quantum computation. Integrated CV quantum light sources offer a scalable pathway by harnessing low-loss nonlinear materials, versatile device architectures, and CMOS-compatible fabrication processes enabled by integrated photonics platforms. In this review, we briefly introduce recent progress on integrated CV quantum light sources, including single-mode squeezed states, two-mode squeezed states, and multimode entangled states. The key performance metrics of CV quantum light sources, such as the squeezing level, bandwidth, purity, and mode multiplexing, are analyzed. We highlight representative implementations of lithium niobate, silicon nitride, and silica platforms for CV quantum light sources and discuss major challenges for realizing integrated large-scale and fault-tolerant CV quantum computation.

Programmable time-multiplexed squeezed light source

Hiroko Tomoda, Takato O. Yoshida, Takahiro Kashiwazaki +3 more

One of the leading approaches to large-scale quantum information processing (QIP) is the continuous-variable (CV) scheme based on time multiplexing (TM). As a fundamental building block for this approach, quantum light sources to sequentially produce time-multiplexed squeezed-light pulses are required; however, conventional CV TM experiments have used fixed light sources that can only output the squeezed pulses with the same squeezing levels and phases. We here demonstrate a programmable time-multiplexed squeezed light source that can generate sequential squeezed pulses with various squeezing levels and phases at a time interval below 100 ns. The generation pattern can be arbitrarily chosen by software without changing its hardware configuration. This is enabled by using a waveguide optical parametric amplifier and modulating its continuous pump light. Our light source will implement various large-scale CV QIP tasks.

Integrated Quantum Optics: Experiments towards integrated quantum-light sources and quantum-enhanced sensing

Ulrich B. Hoff

The work presented in this thesis is focused on experimental application and generation of continuous variable quantum correlated states of light in integrated dielectric structures. Squeezed states are among the most exploited continuous variable optical states for free-space quantum-enhanced sensing and communication protocols, but for these developments to be applicable for future technologies they must be transformed to an integrated architecture compatible with current electro-optical technology. So far only little work has been done in this direction, but two such contributions are made in this thesis: Firstly, we present proof-of-principle demonstration of interfacing squeezed light with an on-chip optomechanical resonator, demonstrating a quantum-enhanced sensitivity to the vibrations of the micromechanical object. Secondly, work on developing an integrated source of squeezed light is presented and an optimized device design is proposed. The devices have been fabricated and tested optically and preliminary interrogations of the output quantum noise have been performed.
