Tunable spin-orbit coupling and magnetic superstripe phase in a Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

Superstripe phases in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), possessing both crystalline structure and superfluidity, open a new avenue for exploring exotic quantum matters---supersolids. However, conclusive detection and further exploration of a superstripe is still challenging in experiments because of its short period, low visibility, fragility against magnetic-field fluctuation, or short lifetime. Here we propose a scheme in a spin-orbit coupled BEC which overcomes these obstacles and generates a robust magnetic superstripe phase, with only spin-density (no total density) modulation due to the magnetic translational symmetry, ready for direct real-space observation. In the scheme, two hyperfine spin states are individually Raman coupled with a largely detuned third state, which induce a momentum-space separation between two lower band dispersions, yielding an effective spin-1/2 system with tunable spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman fields. Without effective Zeeman fields, spin-dependent interaction dominates, yielding a magnetic superstripe phase with a long tunable period and high visibility. Our scheme provides a platform for observing and exploring exotic properties of superstripe phases as well as novel physics with tunable spin-orbit coupling.

Tunable spin superstripe phase with a long period and high visibility

Xi-Wang Luo, Chuanwei Zhang

Recent experimental observation of superstripe phases in double well optical lattices with Raman-assisted tunneling using Bragg reflection opens a new avenue for exploring supersolids, exotic quantum matters possessing both crystalline structure and superfluidity. However, direct real-space detection of a superstripe is still challenging in experiments because of its short period and low visibility. Here we propose a scheme for generating a spin superstripe phase [i.e., only spin (no total) density modulation] with a long period ($\sim $5 $\mu $m) and high visibility ($\sim $100%) in a spin-orbit coupled BEC, which can be directly observed in the real-space. In the scheme, two hyperfine spin states are individually Raman coupled with a largely-detuned third state, which induce a momentum-space separation between two lower band dispersions, yielding an effective spin-1/2 system with tunable spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman fields. Spin-Tensor–Momentum-Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Xi-Wang Luo, Kuei Sun, Chuanwei Zhang

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atomic gases provides a powerful platform for exploring many interesting quantum phenomena. In these studies, spin represents the spin vector (spin 1/2 or spin 1) and orbit represents the linear momentum. Here we propose a scheme to realize a new type of spin-tensor-momentum coupling (STMC) in spin-1 ultracold atomic gases. We study the ground state properties of interacting Bose-Einstein condensates with STMC and find interesting new types of stripe superfluid phases and multicritical points for phase transitions. Furthermore, STMC makes it possible to study quantum states with dynamical stripe orders that display density modulation with a long tunable period and high visibility, paving the way for the direct experimental observation of a new dynamical supersolidlike state. Our scheme for generating STMC can be generalized to other systems and may open the door for exploring novel quantum physics and device applications.

Emergence of spin-mixed superstripe phases in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 condensates

Sanu Kumar Gangwar, Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Paulsamy Muruganandam +1 more

We numerically investigate the ground state phases and quench dynamics of spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. For finite Rabi coupling, the system exhibits zero-momentum, elongated zero-momentum, and stripe phases, while in the limit $Ω\rightarrow 0$, the superstripe wave phases emerge. Varying the attractive density-density ($c_0$) and spin-exchange ($c_2$) interactions induces the transition from stripe and superstripe phases to the elongated zero-momentum phase, characterized by miscibility and polarization. The condensate remains miscible in the zero-momentum phase and partially miscible for the elongated, stripe, and superstripe phases. Quenching in Rabi coupling stabilizes the condensate, while spin-orbit coupling quenching leads to fluctuations or the formation of complex patterns, with the stripe phase exhibiting the vanishing of the zeroth spin component over time. Our results may offer valuable insights into engineering exotic quantum phases in ultracold atomic gases.

Magnetic stripe soliton and localized stripe wave in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

Li-Chen Zhao, Xi-Wang Luo, Chuanwei Zhang

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atomic gases opens a new avenue for engineering solitons with internal spatial structures through tuning atomic band dispersions. However, the types of the resulting stripe solitons in a spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) have been limited to dark-dark or bright-bright with the same density profiles for different spins. Here we propose that general types of stripe solitons, including magnetic stripe solitons (e.g., dark-bright) and localized stripe waves (neither bright nor dark), could be realized in a spin-1 BEC with widely tunable band dispersions through modulating the coupling between three spin states and the linear momentum of atoms. Surprisingly, a moving magnetic stripe soliton can possess both negative and positive effective masses at different velocities, leading to a zero-mass soliton at certain velocity. Our work showcases the great potential of realizing novel types of solitons through band dispersion engineering, which may provide a new approach for exploring soliton physics in many physical branches.

Ground-state phase and superfluidity of tunable spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Jun-Cheng Liang, Yanchao Zhang, Chen Jiao +2 more

We theoretically study the ground-state phases and superfluidity of tunable spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) under the periodic driving of Raman coupling. An effective time-independent Floquet Hamiltonian is proposed by using a high-frequency approximation, and we find single-particle dispersion, spin-orbit-coupling, and asymmetrical nonlinear two-body interaction can be modulated effectively by the periodic driving. The critical Raman coupling characterizing the phase transition and relevant physical quantities in three different phases (the stripe phase, plane-wave phase, and zero momentum phase) are obtained analytically. Our results indicate that the boundary of ground-state phases can be controlled and the system will undergo three different phase transitions by adjusting the external driving. Interestingly, we find the contrast of the stripe density can be enhanced by the periodic driving in the stripe phase. We also study the superfluidity of tunable spin-orbit-coupled BECs and find the dynamical instability can be tuned by the periodic driving of Raman coupling. Furthermore, the sound velocity of the ground-state and superfluidity state can be controlled effectively by tuning the periodic driving strength. Our results indicate that the periodic driving of Raman coupling provides a powerful tool to manipulate the ground-state phase transition and dynamical instability of spin-orbit-coupled BECs.

Supersolid phase of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: A perturbation approach

Giovanni Italo Martone, S. Stringari

The phase diagram of a Bose-Einstein condensate with Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling includes a stripe phase with supersolid features. In this work we develop a perturbation approach to study the ground state and the Bogoliubov modes of this phase, holding for small values of the Raman coupling. We obtain analytical predictions for the most relevant observables (including the periodicity of stripes, sound velocities, compressibility, and magnetic susceptibility) which are in excellent agreement with the exact (non perturbative) numerical results, obtained for significantly large values of the coupling. We further unveil the nature of the two gapless Bogoliubov modes in the long-wavelength limit. We find that the spin branch of the spectrum, corresponding in this limit to the dynamics of the relative phase between the two spin components, describes a translation of the fringes of the equilibrium density profile, thereby providing the crystal Goldstone mode typical of a supersolid configuration. Finally, using sum-rule arguments, we show that the superfluid density can be experimentally accessed by measuring the ratio of the sound velocities parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the spin-orbit coupling.
