Abstract

We address SU(1,1) interferometry in the presence of phase diffusion and photon losses and evaluate analytically the corresponding quantum Fisher information. Using this result we determine the thresholds on the noise parameters, as a function of total mean photon number, in order to beat the standard quantum limit to phase sensitivity.

Sub-shot-noise-limited phase estimation via SU(1,1) interferometer with thermal states

Xiaoping Ma, Chenglong You, Sushovit Adhikari +4 more

We theoretically study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with a thermal state and a squeezed vacuum state as inputs and parity detection as the measurement. We find that the phase sensitivity can beat the shot-noise limit and approaches the Heisenberg limit, with increasing input photon number, in an ideal situation. We also consider the e ect of various noises, including photon loss, dark counts, and thermal photon noise. Our results show that the phase sensitivity is below the shot-noise limit with photon loss and dark counts, but cannot beat the shot-noise limit in the presence of thermal noise.

Phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer in photon-loss via photon operations

Youke Xu, Teng Zhao, Qingqian Kang +3 more

We study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with photon loss by using three different photon operations schemes, i.e., performing photon-addition operation on the input port of the SU(1,1) interferometer (Scheme A), the interior of SU(1,1) interferometer (Scheme B), and both of them (Scheme C). We compare the performance of the three schemes in phase estimation by performing the same times of photon-addition operation to the mode b. The results show that Scheme B improves the phase sensitivity best in ideal case, and Scheme C performs well against internal loss, especially in the case of strong loss. All the three schemes can beat the standard quantum limit in the presence of photon loss, but Scheme B and Scheme C can break through the standard quantum limit in a larger loss range.

Phase estimation of phase shifts in two arms for an SU(1,1) interferometer with coherent and squeezed vacuum states

Qian-Kun Gong, Dong Li, Chun-Hua Yuan +2 more

We theoretically present the quantum Cramér-Rao bounds (QCRB) of an SU(1,1) interferometer for Gaussian states input with and without the internal photonic losses. The phase shifts in the single arm and in the double arms are studied and the corresponding analytical expressions of quantum Fisher information with Gaussian input states are presented. Different from the traditional Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the QCRB of single arm case is slightly higher or lower than that of double arms case depending on the input states. With a fixed mean photon number and for pure Gaussian state input, the optimal sensitivity is achieved with a squeezed vacuum input in one mode and the vacuum input in the other. We compare the QCRB with the standard quantum limit and Heisenberg limit. In the case of small internal losses the QCRB can beat the standard quantum limit.

Phase sensitivity for an SU(1,1) interferometer via multiphoton subtraction at the output port

Jiang, Tao, Zekun Zhao, Qingqian Kang +4 more

In the field of quantum precision measurement, enhancing phase sensitivity is crucial for various applications, including quantum metrology and quantum sensing technologies. We theoretically investigate the improvement in phase sensitivity and quantum Fisher information achieved through multiphoton subtraction operations at the output port of an SU(1,1) interferometer under conditions of photon loss. We use vacuum and coherent states as the inputs and detect the outputs by intensity detection. The results indicate that internal photon losses within the SU(1,1) interferometer have a more significant impact on the phase sensitivity compared to external photon losses. Moreover, increasing the number of photon subtractions m effectively enhances both the phase sensitivity and the quantum Fisher information. Notably, even under conditions of severe photon loss, the multiphoton subtraction operations can enable the phase sensitivity to surpass the standard quantum limit, approaching both the Heisenberg limit and the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. This study provides a new theoretical basis for enhancing the phase sensitivity in the SU(1,1) interferometer.

Quantum-enhanced SU(1,1) interferometry via a Fock state

Shuai Wang, Jiandong Zhang, Xue-xiang Xu

In this paper, we derive a general expression of the quantum Fisher information of an SU(1,1) interferometer with an arbitrary state and a Fock state as inputs by the phase-averaging method. Our results show that the same quantum Fisher information can be obtained regardless of the specific form of the arbitrary state. Then, we analytically prove that the parity measurement can saturate the quantum Cramer-Rao bound when the estimated phase sits at the optimal working point. For practical reasons, we investigate the phase sensitivity when the arbitrary state is a coherent or thermal state. We further show that a Fock state can indeed enhance the phase sensitivity within a constraint on the total mean photon number inside the interferometer.
