Abstract

Abstract We unravel the dynamical stability of a fully polarized one-dimensional ultracold few-fermion spin-1/2 gas subjected to inhomogeneous driving of the itinerant spins. Despite the unstable character of the total spin-polarization the existence of an interaction regime is demonstrated where the spin-correlations lead to almost maximally aligned spins throughout the dynamics. The resulting ferromagnetic order emerges from the build up of superpositions of states of maximal total spin. They comprise a decaying spin-polarization and a dynamical evolution towards an almost completely unpolarized NOON-like state. Via single-shot simulations we demonstrate that our theoretical predictions can be detected in state-of-the-art ultracold experiments.

Itinerant Ferromagnetism in an Ultracold Atom Fermi Gas

R. A. Duine, Allan H. MacDonald

We address the possible occurrence of ultracold atom ferromagnetism by evaluating the free energy of a spin polarized Fermi gas to second order in its interaction parameter. We find that Hartree-Fock theory underestimates the tendency toward ferromagnetism, predict that the ferromagnetic transition is first order at low temperatures, and point out that the spin coherence time of gases prepared in a ferromagnetic state is strongly enhanced as the transition is approached. We relate our results to recent experiments.

Stability of a fully magnetized ferromagnetic state in repulsively interacting ultracold Fermi gases

Xiaoling Cui, Hui Zhai

We construct a variational wave function to study whether a fully polarized Fermi sea of ultracold atoms is energetically stable against a single spin flip. Our variational wave function contains short-range correlations at least to the same level as Gutzwiller's projected wave function. For the Hubbard lattice model and the continuum model with pure repulsive interaction, we show that a fully polarized Fermi sea is generally unstable even for infinite repulsive strength. By contrast, for a resonance model, the ferromagnetic state is possible if the $s$-wave scattering length is positive and sufficiently large and the system is prepared to be orthogonal to the molecular bound state. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that more exotic correlations can destabilize the ferromagnetic state.

Interplay of phase separation and itinerant magnetism for correlated few fermions in a double-well

Georgios M. Koutentakis, S. I. Mistakidis, Peter Schmelcher

Abstract We explore the stability of the phase separation phenomenon in few-fermion spin-1/2 systems confined in a double-well potential. It is shown that within the SU(2) symmetric case, where the total spin is conserved, the phase separation cannot be fully stabilized. An interaction regime characterized by metastable phase separation emerges for intermediate interactions which is inherently related with ferromagnetic spin–spin correlations emerging within each of the wells. The breaking of the SU(2) symmetry crucially affects the stability properties of the system as the phase separated state can be stabilized even for weak magnetic potential gradients. Our results imply an intricate relation between the phenomena of phase separation and ferromagnetism that lies beyond the view of the Stoner instability.

Short-Time Spin Dynamics in Strongly Correlated Few-Fermion Systems

Sebastiano Peotta, Davide Rossini, Pietro Silvi +3 more

The nonequilibrium spin dynamics of a one-dimensional system of repulsively interacting fermions is studied by means of density-matrix renormalization group simulations. We focus on the short-time decay of the oscillation amplitudes of the centers of mass of spin-up and spin-down fermions. Because of many body effects, the decay is found to evolve from quadratic to linear in time, and eventually back to quadratic as the strength of the interaction increases. The characteristic rate of the decay increases linearly with the strength of repulsion in the weak-coupling regime, while it is inversely proportional to it in the strong-coupling regime. Our predictions can be tested in experiments on tunable ultracold few-fermion systems in one-dimensional traps.

Disordered structures in ultracold spin-imbalanced Fermi gas

Buğra Tüzemen, Tomasz Zawiślak, Gabriel Wlazłowski +1 more

Abstract We investigate properties of spin-imbalanced ultracold Fermi gas in a large range of spin polarizations at low temperatures. We present results of microscopic calculations based on mean-field and density functional theory approaches, with no symmetry constraints. At low polarization values we predict the structure of the system as consisting of several spin-polarized droplets. As the polarization increases, the system self-organizes into a disordered structures similar to liquid crystals, and energetically they can compete with ordered structures such as grid-like domain walls. At higher polarizations the system starts to develop regularities that, in principle, can be called supersolid, where periodic density modulation and pairing correlations coexist. The robustness of the results has been checked with respect to temperature effects, dimensionality, and the presence of a trapping potential. Dynamical stability has also been investigated.

Spin-imbalanced fermion on a dynamic lattice

Jie Liu, Xiaofan Zhou, Suotang Jia

We investigate the magnetic order of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermion dynamical lattice, where itinerant fermions are coupled to bond-centered localized spins via an Ising-like spin dependent hopping. The model provides an anisotropic dynamical extension of conventional spin-1/2 fermion systems, in which the motion of itinerant fermions is directly modulated by the configuration of localized spins. Using density matrix renormalization group simulations, we map out the ground state phase diagram in various parameter spaces. Depending on the interplay among the hopping dependent on localized spins, the longitudinal field, and the external Zeeman field, two distinct phases are obtained: a paramagnetic phase and a spin-density-wave phase. Most notably, in the partially spin-polarized fermion phase, the spin-density wave ordering wave vector exhibits two distinct phenomena, corresponding respectively to the nesting vectors $2k_{F\uparrow}$ and $2k_{F\downarrow}$ of the spin-resolved Fermi surfaces. We further demonstrate that the two spin-density wave phases are robust against the repulsive Hubbard interaction between itinerant fermions. Our results reveal a novel route for tuning magnetic modulations in one-dimensional correlated systems and enrich the microscopic understanding of dynamical lattice magnetism.
