Abstract

We investigate the magnetic order of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermion dynamical lattice, where itinerant fermions are coupled to bond-centered localized spins via an Ising-like spin dependent hopping. The model provides an anisotropic dynamical extension of conventional spin-1/2 fermion systems, in which the motion of itinerant fermions is directly modulated by the configuration of localized spins. Using density matrix renormalization group simulations, we map out the ground state phase diagram in various parameter spaces. Depending on the interplay among the hopping dependent on localized spins, the longitudinal field, and the external Zeeman field, two distinct phases are obtained: a paramagnetic phase and a spin-density-wave phase. Most notably, in the partially spin-polarized fermion phase, the spin-density wave ordering wave vector exhibits two distinct phenomena, corresponding respectively to the nesting vectors $2k_{F\uparrow}$ and $2k_{F\downarrow}$ of the spin-resolved Fermi surfaces. We further demonstrate that the two spin-density wave phases are robust against the repulsive Hubbard interaction between itinerant fermions. Our results reveal a novel route for tuning magnetic modulations in one-dimensional correlated systems and enrich the microscopic understanding of dynamical lattice magnetism.

Magnetic order and strongly correlated effects in the one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice

Xiaofan Zhou, Jingtao Fan, Suotang Jia

We investigate the magnetic order and related strongly correlated effects in a one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice with transverse field. This model is the anisotropic limit of the conventional isotropic Kondo lattice model, in the sense that the itinerant electrons interact with the localized magnetic moments via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Adopting the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method, we map out the ground-state phase diagram in various parameter spaces. Depending on the Kondo coupling and filling number, three distinct phases, including a metallic paramagnetic, a metallic ferromagnetic, and a gapped spin-density wave phase, are obtained. The spin-density wave is characterized by an ordering wave vector, which coincides with the nesting wave vector of the Fermi surface. This makes the corresponding magnetic transition a spin analog of the Peierls transition occurring in the one-dimensional metal. Moreover, by analyzing the momentum distribution function and charge correlation function, the conduction electrons are shown to behave like free spinless fermions in the ferromagnetic phase. We finally discuss the effect of the repulsive Hubbard interaction between conduction electrons. Our paper enriches the Kondo physics and deepens the current understanding of the heavy fermion compounds.

Magnetic localization in the spin-polarized one-dimensional Anderson-Hubbard model

Masahiko Okumura, S. Yamada, Nobuhiko Taniguchi +1 more

In order to study an interplay of disorder, correlation, and spin imbalance on antiferromagnetism, we systematically explore the ground state of one-dimensional spin-imbalanced Anderson-Hubbard model by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. We find that disorders localize the antiferromagnetic spin-density wave induced by imbalanced fermions and the increase in the disorder magnitude shrinks the areas of the localized antiferromagnetized regions. Moreover, the antiferromagnetism finally disappears above a large disorder. The localization behaviors are observable in atomic Fermi gases loaded on optical lattices as broadening of the momentum distribution of the spin density by using the Stern-Gerlach type of time-of-flight imaging.

Spin-imbalance in a 2D Fermi-Hubbard system

Peter T. Brown, Debayan Mitra, Elmer Guardado-Sanchez +7 more

The interplay of strong interactions and magnetic fields gives rise to unusual forms of superconductivity and magnetism in quantum many-body systems. Here, we present an experimental study of the two-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model-a paradigm for strongly correlated fermions on a lattice-in the presence of a Zeeman field and varying doping. Using site-resolved measurements, we revealed anisotropic antiferromagnetic correlations, a precursor to long-range canted order. We observed nonmonotonic behavior of the local polarization with doping for strong interactions, which we attribute to the evolution from an antiferromagnetic insulator to a metallic phase. Our results pave the way to experimentally mapping the low-temperature phase diagram of the Fermi-Hubbard model as a function of both doping and spin polarization, for which many open questions remain.

Multitude of phases in correlated lattice fermion systems with spin-dependent disorder

Jan Skolimowski, D. Vollhardt, Krzysztof Byczuk

The magnetic phases induced by the interplay between disorder acting only on particles with a given spin projection ('spin-dependent disorder') and a local repulsive interaction is explored. To this end the magnetic ground state phase diagram of the Hubbard model at half-filling is computed within dynamical mean-field theory combined with the geometric average over disorder, which is able to describe Anderson localization. Five distinct phases are identified: a ferromagnetically polarized metal, two types of insulators, and two types of spin-selective localized phases. The latter four phases possess different long-range order of the spins. The predicted phase diagram may be tested experimentally using cold fermions in optical lattices subject to spin-dependent random potentials.

Itinerant magnetism in the triangular-lattice Hubbard model at half doping: Application to twisted transition metal dichalcogenides

Yuchi He, Roman Rausch, Matthias Peschke +4 more

We use unrestricted Hartree-Fock, density matrix renormalization group, and variational projected entangled-pair state calculations to investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the triangular-lattice Hubbard model at “half doping” relative to single occupancy, i.e., at fillings of ( 1 ± 1 2 ) electrons per site. The electron-doped case has a nested Fermi surface in the noninteracting limit, and hence a weak-coupling instability toward density-wave orders whose wave vectors are determined by Fermi-surface nesting conditions. We find that at moderate-to-strong interaction strengths, other spatially modulated orders arise, with wave vectors distinct from the nesting vectors. In particular, we identify a series of closely competing, itinerant long-wavelength magnetically ordered states, yielding to uniform ferromagnetic order at the largest interaction strengths. For half-hole doping and a similar range of interaction strengths, our data indicate that magnetic orders are most likely absent.
