Abstract

Under an appropriate symmetric bulk bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry protected topological phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki matrix product state wave function for the odd integer spin chains, a bulk critical entanglement spectrum can be obtained, describing the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the topological phase from the trivial state with the same symmetry. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry-breaking phase transitions. Recently, the framework of matrix product states for topological phases with Majorana fermions/parafermions has been established. Here we first generalize these fixed-point matrix product states with the zero correlation length to the more generic ground-state wave functions with a finite correlation length for the general one-dimensional interacting Majorana fermion/parafermion systems. Then we employ the previous method to decode quantum criticality to the interacting Majorana fermion/parafermion matrix product states. The obtained quantum critical spectra are described by the conformal field theories with central charge $c\ensuremath{\le}1$, characterizing the quantum critical theories separating the fermionic/parafermionic topological phase from the trivial phases with the same symmetry.

Critical-entanglement spectrum of one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological phases

Wen-Jia Rao, Xin Wan, Guang-Ming Zhang

Under an appropriate symmetric extensive bipartition in a one-dimensional symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, a bulk critical-entanglement spectrum can be obtained, resembling the excitation spectrum of the critical point separating the SPT phase from the trivial (vacuum) state. Such a critical point is beyond the standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm for symmetry-breaking phase transitions. For the $S=1$ SPT (Haldane) phase with the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki exact wave function, the resulting critical-entanglement spectrum has a residual entropy per lattice site ${s}_{r}=0.67602$, showing a delocalized version of the edge excitations in the SPT phase. From the wave function corresponding to the lowest entanglement energy level, the central charge of the critical point can be extracted $c\ensuremath{\approx}1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01$. The critical theory can be identified as the same effective field theory as the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain or the spin-1/2 Haldane-Shastry model with inverse-square long-range interaction.

Matrix product states for topological phases with parafermions

Wen-Tao Xu, Guang-Ming Zhang

In the Fock representation, we propose a framework to construct the generalized matrix product states (MPS) for topological phases with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions. Unlike the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ Majorana fermions, the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions form intrinsically interacting systems. Here we explicitly construct two topologically distinct classes of irreducible ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ parafermionic MPS wave functions, characterized by one or two parafermionic zero modes at each end of an open chain. Their corresponding parent Hamiltonians are found as the fixed point models of the single ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ parafermion chain and two-coupled parafermion chains with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{3}$ symmetry. Our results thus pave the road to investigate all possible topological phases with ${\mathbb{Z}}_{p}$ parafermions within the matrix product representation in one dimension.

Quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd-integer spin model as the entanglement Hamiltonian of the integer-spin Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki states

Wen-Jia Rao, Guang-Ming Zhang, Kun Yang

Applying a symmetric bulk bipartition to the one-dimensional Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence-bond solid (VBS) states for the integer spin-$S$ Haldane gapped phase, we can create an array of fractionalized spin-$S$/2 edge states with the super unit cell $l$ in the reduced bulk system, and the topological properties encoded in the VBS wave functions can be revealed. The entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) with even $l$ corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-$S$/2 model. For the even integer spins, the EH still describes the Haldane gapped phase. For the odd integer spins, however, the EH just corresponds to the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg half-odd integer-spin model with spinon excitations, characterizing the critical point separating the topological Haldane phase from the trivial gapped phase. Our results thus demonstrate that the topological bulk property not only determines its fractionalized edge states but also the quantum criticality associated with the topological phase, where the elementary excitations are precisely those fractionalized edge degrees of freedom confined in the bulk of the topological phase.

Topological Phases of Parafermions: A Model with Exactly Solvable Ground States

Fernando Iemini, Christophe Mora, Leonardo Mazza

Parafermions are emergent excitations that generalize Majorana fermions and can also realize topological order. In this Letter, we present a nontrivial and quasi-exactly-solvable model for a chain of parafermions in a topological phase. We compute and characterize the ground-state wave functions, which are matrix-product states and have a particularly elegant interpretation in terms of Fock parafermions, reflecting the factorized nature of the ground states. Using these wave functions, we demonstrate analytically several signatures of topological order. Our study provides a starting point for the nonapproximate study of topological one-dimensional parafermionic chains with spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetry in the absence of strong edge modes.

Tensor network implementation of bulk entanglement spectrum

Timothy H. Hsieh, Liang Fu, Xiao-Liang Qi

Many topologically nontrivial states of matter possess gapless degrees of freedom on the boundary, and when these boundary states delocalize into the bulk, a phase transition occurs, and the system becomes topologically trivial. We show that tensor networks provide a natural framework for analyzing such topological phase transitions in terms of the boundary degrees of freedom which mediate it. To do so, we make use of a correspondence between a topologically nontrivial ground state and its phase transition to a trivial phase established in T. Hsieh and L. Fu (arXiv:1305.1949). This involved computing the bulk entanglement spectrum (BES) of the ground state upon tracing out an extensive subsystem. This work implements BES via tensor network representations of ground states. In this framework, the universality class of the quantum critical entanglement Hamiltonian in $d$ spatial dimensions is either derived analytically or mapped to a classical statistical model in $d+1$ dimensions, which can be studied using Monte Carlo or tensor renormalization-group methods. As an example, we analytically derive the universality classes of topological phase transitions from the spin-1 chain Haldane phase and demonstrate that the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) wave function (and its generalizations) remarkably contains critical six-vertex (and, in general, eight-vertex) models within it.

Topologically distinct critical theories emerging from the bulk entanglement spectrum of integer quantum Hall states on a lattice

Qiong Zhu, Xin Wan, Guang-Ming Zhang

The critical theories for the topological phase transitions of integer quantum Hall states to a trivial insulating state with the same symmetry can be obtained by calculating the ground state entanglement spectrum under a symmetric checkerboard bipartition. In contrast to the gapless edge excitations under the left-right bipartition, a quantum network with bulk gapless excitations naturally emerges without fine tuning. On a large finite lattice, the resulting critical theory for the $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$ state is the (2 + 1)-dimensional relativistic quantum field theory characterized by a single Dirac cone spectrum and a pair of fractionalized zero-energy states, while for the $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ state the critical theory exhibits a parabolic spectrum and no sign of fractionalization in the zero-energy states. A triangular correspondence is established among the bulk topological theory, gapless edge theory, and the critical theory via the ground state entanglement spectrum.
