Abstract

Abstract In this paper, a method to accelerate population transfer by designing nonadiabatic evolution paths is proposed. We apply the method to realize robust and accelerated population transfer with a transmon qutrit. By numerical simulation, we show that this method allows a robust population transfer between the ground states in a Λ system. Moreover, the total pulse area for the population transfer is low as 1.9π that verifies the evolution is accelerated without increasing the pulse intensity. Therefore, the method is easily implementable based on the modern pulse shaper technology and it provides selectable schemes with interesting applications in quantum information processing.

Fast and robust population transfer with a Josephson qutrit via shortcut to adiabaticity

Zhi‐Bo Feng, Xiao-Jing Lu, Run‐Ying Yan +1 more

We propose an effective scheme to implement fast and robust population transfer with a Josephson qutrit via shortcut to adiabaticity. Facilitated by the level-transition rule, a Λ-configuration resonant interaction can be realized between microwave drivings and the qutrit with sufficient level anharmonicity, from which we perform the reversible population transfers via invariant-based shortcut. Compared with the detuned drivings, the utilized resonant drivings shorten the transfer times significantly. Further analysis of the dependence of transfer time on Rabi couplings is helpful to experimental investigations. Thanks to the accelerated process, transfer operation is highly insensitive to noise effects. Thus the protocol could provide a promising avenue to experimentally perform fast and robust quantum operations on Josephson artificial atoms.

Superadiabatic population transfer in a three-level superconducting circuit

Antti P. Vepsäläinen, Sergey Danilin, Gheorghe Sorin Paraoanu

Adiabatic manipulation of the quantum state is an essential tool in modern quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate the speedup of the adiabatic population transfer in a three-level superconducting transmon circuit by suppressing the spurious nonadiabatic excitations with an additional two-photon microwave pulse. We apply this superadiabatic method to the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage, realizing fast and robust population transfer from the ground state to the second excited state of the quantum circuit.

Fast population transfer with a superconducting qutrit via non-Hermitian shortcut to adiabaticity

Xin-Ping Dong, Zhi‐Bo Feng, Xiao-Jing Lu +2 more

Non-Hermitian dissipation dynamics, capable of turning the conventionally detrimental decoherence effects to useful resources for state engineering, is highly attractive to quantum information processing. In this work, an effective scheme is developed for implementing fast population transfer with a superconducting qutrit via the non-Hermitian shortcut to adiabaticity (STA). We first deal with a Λ-configuration interaction between the qutrit and microwave drivings, in which the dephasing-assisted qubit state inversion requiring an overlarge dephasing rate is constructed non-adiabatically. After introducing a feasible ancillary driving that directly acts upon the qubit states, the target state transfer can be well realized but with an accessible qubit dephasing rate. Moreover, a high fidelity could be numerically obtained in the considered system. The strategy could provide a new route towards the non-Hermitian shortcut operations on superconducting quantum circuits.

Ultrafast stimulated Raman parallel adiabatic passage by shaped pulses

Ghassen Dridi, S. Guérin, Vagharshak Hakobyan +2 more

We present a general and versatile technique of population transfer based on parallel adiabatic passage by femtosecond shaped pulses. Their amplitude and phase are specifically designed to optimize the adiabatic passage corresponding to parallel eigenvalues at all times. We show that this technique allows the robust adiabatic population transfer in a Raman system with the total pulse area as low as $3\ensuremath{\pi}$, corresponding to a fluence of one order of magnitude below the conventional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process. This process of short duration, typically picosecond and subpicosecond, is easily implementable with the modern pulse shaper technology and opens the possibility of ultrafast robust population transfer with interesting applications in quantum information processing.

Nonleaky and accelerated population transfer in a transmon qutrit

Xiao-Jing Lu, M. Li, Zhongan Zhao +4 more

We propose a theoretical scheme for implementing nonleaky and accelerated population transfer with a transmon qutrit. For a transmon-regime artificial atom with weak level anharmonicity, the leakage effects on the target population transfer are considerable. Allowed by the level-transition rule, a two-photon resonant interaction can be obtained between the qutrit and microwave drivings. In the regime of large detuning, by adopting the technique of invariant-based inverse engineering, the population transfer with no leakage errors can be sped up drastically when compared with the adiabatic operation. Moreover, the accelerated operation is highly robust against decoherence effects. Thanks to these distinctive advantages, the proposed protocol could offer a promising avenue to optimal quantum operations on transmon artificial atoms.

Population Transfer in a Nitrogen-Vacancy Spin Qutrit via Shortcuts to Adiabaticity with Simplified Drivings

Run‐Ying Yan, Zhi‐Bo Feng

Optimal control of quantum system is significant for information science and technology. Here, an efficient scheme is proposed for implementing fast population transfer in a spin qutrit of nitrogen-vacancy center via shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) with simplified drivings. At two-photon resonance, a $$\Lambda $$ -configuration interaction between the spin qutrit and driving fields can be obtained effectively. By the invariant-based STA, the reversible population transfer can be realized using the Rabi pulses with sine and cosine waveforms. Compared with the superadiabatic transitionless driving, the present pulses in our strategy become simplified technically, contributing to reduce the error effect of control parameter deviations. Moreover, the high-fidelity quantum operations can be performed with the accessible decoherence rates. The protocol could offer an optimized avenue towards the STA-based quantum control of spin qutrit experimentally.
