Entropic Uncertainty Relations for Successive Generalized Measurements

Abstract

We derive entropic uncertainty relations for successive generalized measurements by using general descriptions of quantum measurement within two distinctive operational scenarios. In the first scenario, by merging two successive measurements into one we consider successive measurement scheme as a method to perform an overall composite measurement. In the second scenario, on the other hand, we consider it as a method to measure a pair of jointly measurable observables by marginalizing over the distribution obtained in this scheme. In the course of this work, we identify that limits on one’s ability to measure with low uncertainty via this scheme come from intrinsic unsharpness of observables obtained in each scenario. In particular, for the Lüders instrument, disturbance caused by the first measurement to the second one gives rise to the unsharpness at least as much as incompatibility of the observables composing successive measurement.

Unsharpness of generalized measurement and its effects in entropic uncertainty relations

Kyunghyun Baek, Wonmin Son

Under the scenario of generalized measurements, it can be questioned how much of quantum uncertainty can be attributed to measuring device, independent of the uncertainty in the measured system. On the course to answer the question, we suggest a new class of entropic uncertainty relation that differentiates quantum uncertainty from device imperfection due to the unsharpness of measurement. In order to quantify the unsharpness, we suggest and analyze the quantity that characterizes the uncertainty in the measuring device, based on Shannon entropy. Using the quantity, we obtain a new lower bound of entropic uncertainty with unsharpness and it has been shown that the relation can also be obtained under the scenario that sharp observables are affected by the white noise and amplitude damping.

Optimized entropic uncertainty for successive projective measurements

Kyunghyun Baek, Tristan Farrow, Wonmin Son

We focus here on the uncertainty of an observable $Y$ caused by a precise measurement of $X$. We illustrate the effect by analyzing the general scenario of two successive measurements of spin components $X$ and $Y$. We derive an optimized entropic uncertainty limit that quantifies the necessary amount of uncertainty observed in a subsequent measurement of $Y$. We compare this bound to recently derived error-disturbance relations and discuss how the bound quantifies the information of successive quantum measurements.

Entropic uncertainty relations for successive measurements of canonically conjugate observables

Alexey E. Rastegin

Uncertainties in successive measurements of general canonically conjugate variables are examined. Such operators are approached within a limiting procedure of the Pegg–Barnett type. Dealing with unbounded observables, we should take into account a finiteness of detector resolution. An appropriate reformulation of two scenarios of successive measurements is proposed and motivated. Uncertainties are characterized by means of generalized entropies of both the Rényi and Tsallis types. The Rényi and Tsallis formulations of uncertainty relations are obtained for both the scenarios of successive measurements of canonically conjugate operators. Entropic uncertainty relations for the cases of position and momentum are separately discussed. image

Entropic Uncertainty Relations via Direct-Sum Majorization Relation for Generalized Measurements

Kyunghyun Baek, Hyunchul Nha, Wonmin Son

We derive an entropic uncertainty relation for generalized positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) measurements via a direct-sum majorization relation using Schur concavity of entropic quantities in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Our approach provides a significant improvement of the uncertainty bound compared with previous majorization-based approaches (Friendland, S.; Gheorghiu, V.; Gour, G. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2013, 111, 230401; Rastegin, A.E.; Życzkowski, K. J. Phys. A, 2016, 49, 355301), particularly by extending the direct-sum majorization relation first introduced in (Rudnicki, Ł.; Puchała, Z.; Życzkowski, K. Phys. Rev. A 2014, 89, 052115). We illustrate the usefulness of our uncertainty relations by considering a pair of qubit observables in a two-dimensional system and randomly chosen unsharp observables in a three-dimensional system. We also demonstrate that our bound tends to be stronger than the generalized Maassen–Uffink bound with an increase in the unsharpness effect. Furthermore, we extend our approach to the case of multiple POVM measurements, thus making it possible to establish entropic uncertainty relations involving more than two observables.

Uncertainty and Certainty Relations for Successive Projective Measurements of a Qubit in Terms of Tsallis' Entropies

Alexey E. Rastegin

Abstract We study uncertainty and certainty relations for two successive measurements of two-dimensional observables. Uncertainties in successive measurement are considered within the following two scenarios. In the first scenario, the second measurement is performed on the quantum state generated after the first measurement with completely erased information. In the second scenario, the second measurement is performed on the post-first-measurement state conditioned on the actual measurement outcome. Induced quantum uncertainties are characterized by means of the Tsallis entropies. For two successive projective measurement of a qubit, we obtain minimal and maximal values of related entropic measures of induced uncertainties. Some conclusions found in the second scenario are extended to arbitrary finite dimensionality. In particular, a connection with mutual unbiasedness is emphasized.

Generalized uncertainty relations for multiple measurements

Lin Wu, Xue‐Ke Song, Liu Ye +1 more

Abstract The uncertainty relation is regarded as a remarkable feature of quantum mechanics differing from the classical counterpart, and it plays a backbone role in the region of quantum information theory. In principle, the uncertainty relation offers a nontrivial limit to predict the outcome of arbitrarily incompatible observed variables. Therefore, to pursue a more general uncertainty relations ought to be considerably important for obtaining accurate predictions of multi-observable measurement results in genuine multipartite systems. In this article, we derive a generalized entropic uncertainty relation (EUR) for multi-measurement in a multipartite framework. It is proved that the bound we proposed is stronger than the one derived from Renes et al. in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103,020402(2009) ] for the arbitrary multipartite case. As an illustration, we take several typical scenarios that confirm that our proposed bound outperforms that presented by Renes et al. Hence, we believe our findings provide generalized uncertainty relations with regard to multi-measurement setting, and facilitate the EUR’s applications on quantum precision measurement regarding genuine multipartite systems.
