Abstract

The chiral Majorana fermion is a massless self-conjugate fermion which can arise as the edge state of certain 2D topological matters. It has been theoretically predicted and experimentally observed in a hybrid device of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator and a conventional superconductor. Its closely related cousin, the Majorana zero mode in the bulk of the corresponding topological matter, is known to be applicable in topological quantum computations. Here we show that the propagation of chiral Majorana fermions leads to the same unitary transformation as that in the braiding of Majorana zero modes and propose a platform to perform quantum computation with chiral Majorana fermions. A Corbino ring junction of the hybrid device can use quantum coherent chiral Majorana fermions to implement the Hadamard gate and the phase gate, and the junction conductance yields a natural readout for the qubit state.

Realization of arbitrary two-qubit quantum gates based on chiral Majorana fermions*

Qing Yan, Qing‐Feng Sun

Quantum computers are in hot-spot with the potential to handle more complex problems than classical computers can. Realizing the quantum computation requires the universal quantum gate set {T, H, CNOT} so as to perform any unitary transformation with arbitrary accuracy. Here we first briefly review the Majorana fermions and then propose the realization of arbitrary two-qubit quantum gates based on chiral Majorana fermions. Elementary cells consist of a quantum anomalous Hall insulator surrounded by a topological superconductor with electric gates and quantum-dot structures, which enable the braiding operation and the partial exchange operation. After defining a qubit by four chiral Majorana fermions, the single-qubit T and H quantum gates are realized via one partial exchange operation and three braiding operations, respectively. The entangled CNOT quantum gate is performed by braiding six chiral Majorana fermions. Besides, we design a powerful device with which arbitrary two-qubit quantum gates can be realized and take the quantum Fourier transform as an example to show that several quantum operations can be performed with this space-limited device. Thus, our proposal could inspire further utilization of mobile chiral Majorana edge states for faster quantum computation.

Universal topological quantum computation with strongly correlated Majorana edge modes

Ye-Min Zhan, Yuge Chen, Bin Chen +3 more

Abstract Majorana-based quantum gates are not complete for performing universal topological quantum computation while Fibonacci-based gates are difficult to be realized electronically and hardly coincide with the conventional quantum circuit models. In reference Hu and Kane (2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 120 066801), it has been shown that a strongly correlated Majorana edge mode in a chiral topological superconductor can be decomposed into a Fibonacci anyon τ and a thermal operator anyon ɛ in the tricritical Ising model. The deconfinement of τ and ɛ via the interaction between the fermion modes yields the anyon collisions and gives the braiding of either τ or ɛ. With these braidings, the complete members of a set of universal gates, the Pauli gates, the Hadamard gate and extra phase gates for one-qubit as well as controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate for two-qubits, are topologically assembled. Encoding quantum information and reading out the computation results can be carried out through electric signals. With the sparse-dense mixed encodings, we set up the quantum circuit where the CNOT gate turns out to be a probabilistic gate and design the corresponding devices with thin films of the chiral topological superconductor. As an example of the universal topological quantum computing, we show the application to Shor’s integer factorization algorithm.

Quantum gates for Majoranas zero modes in topological superconductors in one-dimensional geometry

Marek Narożniak, Matthieu Dartiailh, Jonathan P. Dowling +2 more

We propose and analyze a physical system capable of performing topological quantum computation with Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in a one-dimensional topological superconductor (1DTS). One of the leading methods to realize quantum gates in a 1DTS is to use T junctions, which allows one to maneuver MZMs in such a manner as to achieve braiding. In this paper, we propose a scheme for implementing quantum logical gates in a purely one-dimensional geometry without T junctions, instead replacing it with an auxiliary qubit. This has the additional benefit of introducing a non-Clifford gate, corresponding to one- and two-logical-qubit $Z$ rotations. We first design a topologically protected logical $Z$ gate based entirely on local interactions within the 1DTS. Using an auxiliary qubit coupled to the topological superconductors, we extend the $Z$ gate to non-Clifford single- and multiqubit arbitrary rotations with partial topological protection. Finally, to perform universal quantum computing, we introduce a scheme for performing arbitrary unitary rotations, albeit without topological protection. We develop a formalism based on unitary braids which creates transitions between different topological phases of the 1DTS system. The unitary formalism can be simply converted to an equivalent adiabatic scheme, which we numerically simulate, and we show that high-fidelity operations should be possible with reasonable parameters.

New universal gates for topological quantum computation with Fibonacci-$\boldsymbol{\varepsilon}$ composite Majorana edge modes on topological superconductor multilayers

Xi Luo, Yu-Ge Chen, Ye-Min Zhan +2 more

We propose a new design of universal topological quantum computer device through a hybrid of the 1-, 2- and 7-layers of chiral topological superconductor ($\chi$TSC) thin films. Based on the $SO(7)_1/(G_2)_1$ coset construction, strongly correlated Majorana fermion edge modes on the 7-layers of $\chi$TSC are factorized into the composite of the Fibonacci $\tau$-anyon and $\varepsilon$-anyon modes in the tricritical Ising model. Furthermore, the deconfinement of $\tau$ and $\varepsilon$ via the interacting potential gives the braiding of either $\tau$ or $\varepsilon$. Topological phase gates are assembled by the braidings. With these topological phase gates, we find a set of fully topological universal gates for the $(\tau,\varepsilon)$ composite Majorana-Ising-type quantum computation. Because the Hilbert space still possesses a tensor product structure of quibts and is characterized by the fermion parities, encoding quantum information in this machine is more efficient and substantial than that with Fibonacci anyons. The computation results is easier to be read out by electric signals, so are the initial data inputted.

Non-Abelian braiding of Majorana-like edge states and quantum gates in electric circuits

Motohiko Ezawa

Majorana fermions subject to the non-Abelian braid group are believed to be the basic ingredients of future topological quantum computations. In this work, we propose to simulate Majorana fermions of the Kitaev model in electric circuits. We generate an arbitral number of segments in a Kitaev chain which are in the topological phase. A pair of Majorana-like edge states emerge at the edges of a topological sector, which is observed by impedance peaks. When the Kitaev chain contains $N$ topological sectors, the degeneracy of the zero-admittance states is $2^{N}$. A set of AC voltages along the chain plays a role of the wave function. An \textit{LC} resonator attached to each Majorana-like edge state registers the phase and the absolute value of the voltage. One qubit consists of the in-phase and opposite-phase states made of two \textit{LC} resonators installed in one topological sector. It is possible to braid any pair of neighboring edge states with the aid of T-junction geometry. By calculating the Berry phase acquired by their eigenfunctions, the braiding is shown to generate one-qubit and two-qubit unitary operations. We explicitly construct Clifford quantum gates based on them. The present scheme may simulate topological quantum computations based on electric circuits.

Quantum Computation using Vortices and Majorana Zero Modes of a px+ipy Superfluid of Fermionic Cold Atoms

Sumanta Tewari, S. Das Sarma, Chetan Nayak +2 more

We propose to use the recently predicted two-dimensional "weak-pairing" px + ipy superfluid state of fermionic cold atoms as a platform for topological quantum computation. In the core of a vortex, this state supports a zero-energy Majorana mode, which moves to finite energy in the corresponding topologically trivial "strong-pairing" state. By braiding vortices in the "weak-pairing" state, unitary quantum gates can be applied to the Hilbert space of Majorana zero modes. For readout of the topological qubits, we propose realistic schemes suitable for atomic superfluids.

New universal gates for topological quantum computation with Fibonacci-ε\boldsymbol{\varepsilon}ε composite Majorana edge modes on topological superconductor multilayers
