Quantum phase space trajectories with application to quantum cosmology

Abstract

We develop an approach to quantum dynamics based on quantum phase space trajectories. The latter are built from a unitary irreducible representation of the symmetry group of the respective classical phase space. We use a quantum action functional to derive the basic equations. In principle, our formulation is equivalent to the Hilbert space formulation. However, the former allows for consistent truncations to reduced phase spaces in which approximate quantum dynamics can be derived. We believe that our approach can be very useful in the domain of quantum cosmology and therefore, we use the cosmological phase space example to establish the basic equations of this formalism.

Phase space formulation of quantum mechanics and quantum cosmology

We develop a phase space formulation of quantum mechanics based on unitary irreducible representations of classical phase spaces. We use a quantum action functional to derive the basic equations. In principle, our formulation is equivalent to the Hilbert space formulation. COVARIANT INTEGRAL QUANTIZATIONS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO QUANTUM COSMOLOGY

Jean‐Pierre Gazeau

We present a general formalism for giving a measure space paired with a separable Hilbert space a quantum version based on a normalized positive operator-valued measure. The latter are built from families of density operators labeled by points of the measure space. We especially focus on group representation and probabilistic aspects of these constructions. Simple phase space examples illustrate the procedure: plane (Weyl-Heisenberg symmetry), half-plane (affine symmetry). Interesting applications to quantum cosmology (“smooth bouncing”) for Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric are presented and those for Bianchi I and IX models are mentioned.

Classical and Quantum Integrability: A Formulation That Admits Quantum Chaos

Paul Bracken

The concept of integrability of a quantum system is developed and studied. By formulating the concepts of quantum degree of freedom and quantum phase space, a realization of the dynamics is achieved. For a quantum system with a dynamical group G in one of its unitary irreducible representative carrier spaces, the quantum phase space is a finite topological space. It is isomorphic to a coset space G/R by means of the unitary exponential mapping, where R is the maximal stability subgroup of a fixed state in the carrier space. This approach has the distinct advantage of exhibiting consistency between classical and quantum integrability. The formalism will be illustrated by studying several quantum systems in detail after this development.

Integrability and nonintegrability of quantum systems. II. Dynamics in quantum phase space

Wei-Min Zhang, D.H. Feng, Jian-Min Yuan

Based on the concepts of integrability and nonintegrability of a quantum system presented in a previous paper [Zhang, Feng, Yuan, and Wang, Phys. Rev. A 40, 438 (1989)], a realization of the dynamics in the quantum phase space is now presented. For a quantum system with dynamical group scrG and in one of its unitary irreducible-representation carrier spaces ${\mathit{gerh}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$, the quantum phase space is a 2${\mathit{M}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$-dimensional topological space, where ${\mathit{M}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$ is the quantum-dynamical degrees of freedom. This quantum phase space is isomorphic to a coset space scrG/scrH via the unitary exponential mapping of the elementary excitation operator subspace of scrg (algebra of scrG), where scrH (\ensuremath{\subset}scrG) is the maximal stability subgroup of a fixed state in ${\mathit{gerh}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}}$. The phase-space representation of the system is realized on scrG/scrH, and its classical analogy can be obtained naturally. It is also shown that there is consistency between quantum and classical integrability. Finally, a general algorithm for seeking the manifestation of ``quantum chaos'' via the classical analogy is provided. Illustrations of this formulation in several important quantum systems are presented.

Linear canonical transformations and quantum phase: a unified canonical and algebraic approach

Tugrul Hakioglu

The algebra of generalized linear quantum canonical transformations is examined in the prespective of Schwinger's unitary-canonical basis. Formulation of the quantum phase problem within the theory of quantum canonical transformations and in particular with the generalized quantum action-angle phase space formalism is established and it is shown that the conceptual foundation of the quantum phase problem lies within the algebraic properties of the quantum canonical transformations in the quantum phase space. The representations of the Wigner function in the generalized action-angle unitary operator pair for certain Hamiltonian systems with the dynamical symmetry are examined. This generalized canonical formalism is applied to the quantum harmonic oscillator to examine the properties of the unitary quantum phase operator as well as the action-angle Wigner function.
