Abstract

We investigated the optimal spectral design of periodic structure of narrow lines (AFC-structure) within the inhomogeneously broadened atomic transition which are created for the implementation of broadband AFC photon echo quantum memory. The influence of the spectral design on the suppression of negative dispersion effects in the AFC-echo retrieval was studied for different spectroscopic parameters of atomic media. The maps of the assigned spectral quantum efficiency have been constructed for the created AFC-structures characterized by different spectral design, finesse and optical depth. Based on the performed analysis, we discuss the possible ways for experimental implementation of highly efficient broadband AFC-protocol.

Optimal periodic frequency combs for high-efficiency optical quantum memory based on rare-earth ion crystals

Арсланов Наркис Мусавирович, Sergey A. Moiseev

The possibility of enhancing the quantum efficiency of photon echo broadband quantum memory in rare-earth-ion-doped crystals with a frequency comb structure of optical transition inhomogeneous broadening is studied. We have found the optimal parameters of the frequency combs for implementing the pre-assigned quantum efficiency in the chosen spectral range of the optical transitions of rare-earth ions with real parameters. The obtained results allow the conditions to be formulated for increasing the efficiency of broadband quantum memory. The possibilities of experimental implementation of such memory are also discussed.

Maps of Broadband Quantum Memory Based on an Atomic Frequency Comb

Арсланов Наркис Мусавирович, Sergey A. Moiseev

Abstract The influence of the parameters of an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in the shape of an atomic frequency comb on dispersion effects in the quantum-memory protocol implemented in such an atomic system is investigated. The results allowed maps to be constructed of dispersion and quantum efficiency for implementation of the studied protocol in rare-earth-doped crystals that are promising for creation of a quantum repeater.

Off-resonant Raman-echo quantum memory for inhomogeneously broadened atoms in a cavity

Sergey A. Moiseev

A scheme of photon echo-based quantum memory in the optimal optical QED cavity with off-resonant Raman atomic transition is proposed. The scheme employs the atomic ensembles characterized by an optically thin resonant transition and natural inhomogeneous broadening of the resonant line composed of the arbitrary narrow homogeneous spectral components. The scheme provides robust and quite simple coherent control of the light atoms dynamics that can be implemented by using an existing optical technique and opens a practical way for realization of the efficient long-lived multimode optical quantum memory.

Echo protocols of an optical quantum memory

S. A. Moiseev, K. I. Gerasimov, Mansur M. Minnegaliev +3 more

Based on new obtained analytical results, the main properties of photon echo quantum memory protocols are analysed and discussed together with recently achieved experimental results. The main attention is paid to studying the influence of spectral dispersion and nonlinear interaction of light pulses with resonant atoms. The distinctive features of the effect of spectral dispersion on the quantum storage of broadband signal pulses in the studied echo protocols are identified and discussed. Using photon echo area theorem, closed analytical solutions for echo protocols of quantum memory are obtained, describing the storage of weak and intense signal pulses, allowing us to find the conditions for the implementation of high efficiency in the echo protocols under strong nonlinear interaction of signal and control pulses with atoms. The key existing practical problems and the ways to solve them in realistic experimental conditions are outlined. We also briefly discuss the potential of using the considered photon echo quantum memory protocols in a quantum repeater.

Multimode quantum memory based on atomic frequency combs

Mikael Afzelius, Christoph Simon, Hugues de Riedmatten +1 more

An efficient multimode quantum memory is a crucial resource for long-distance quantum communication based on quantum repeaters. We propose a quantum memory based on spectral shaping of an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition into an atomic frequency comb (AFC). The spectral width of the AFC allows efficient storage of multiple temporal modes without the need to increase the absorption depth of the storage material, in contrast to previously known quantum memories. Efficient readout is possible thanks to rephasing of the atomic dipoles due to the AFC structure. Long-time storage and on-demand readout is achieved by use of spin states in a lambda-type configuration. We show that an AFC quantum memory realized in solids doped with rare-earth-metal ions could store hundreds of modes or more with close to unit efficiency, for material parameters achievable today.

Lineshape Optimization in Inhomogeneous ΛΛΛ-type Quantum Memory

Kai Shinbrough, Donny R. Pearson, Virginia O. Lorenz +1 more

Photonic quantum memory is a crucial elementary operation in photonic quantum information processing. While many physically distinct memory protocols and hardware implementations have been applied to this task, the development of a quantum memory performant in all relevant metrics simultaneously (e.g., efficiency, bandwidth, lifetime, etc.) is still an open challenge. In this work, we focus on inhomogeneously broadened ensembles of $Λ$-type quantum emitters, which have long coherence lifetimes and broad bandwidth compatibility, but tend to exhibit low efficiency, in part due to technical constraints on medium growth and preparation, and in part due to inefficient use of a key resource in these systems: the inhomogeneously broadened excited state lineshape. We investigate the properties of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for a survey of inhomogeneous lineshapes that are straightforward to realize experimentally, and optimize the memory efficiency for each lineshape over a large range of experimental parameters. We compare the optimal EIT efficiency to the well-known atomic frequency comb (AFC) protocol, which also relies on spectral shaping of the inhomogeneous broadening, and observe that with sufficient control field power the optimized lineshapes allow more efficient storage. Finally, we optimize over the inhomogeneous lineshape in a protocol agnostic fashion by numerically constructing the linear integral kernel describing the memory interaction and using a singular value decomposition and interpolation procedure to ensure optimality of the resulting lineshape.
