Design and Implementation of Quantum Repeaters: Insights on Quantum Entanglement Purification

Karoki A. Mũgambi, Geoffrey O. Okeng'o

Quantum communication is a groundbreaking technology that is driving the future of information transmission and communication technologies to a new paradigm. It relies on quantum entanglement to facilitate the transmission of quantum states between parties. Quantum repeaters are crucial for facilitating long-distance quantum communication. These quantum devices act as intermediaries between adjacent communication channel segments within a fragmented quantum network, allowing for entanglement swapping between the channel segments. This entanglement swapping process establishes entanglement links between the endpoints of adjacent segments, gradually creating a continuous entanglement connection over the entire length of the transmission channel. The established quantum link can be utilized for secure and efficient quantum communication between distant sender and receiver nodes. This study focuses on quantum entanglement purification, a protocol aimed at maintaining high fidelity entangled states above the operational threshold of the communication channel. This study investigates the optimal stage for executing the purification protocol and applies optimization schemes to evaluate various purification protocols. We use IBM Qiskit for circuit implementation and simulation. The results offer valuable insights into future approaches to implementing practical quantum repeaters and shed light on existing and anticipated challenges.

Simulation of Quantum Repeater Networks under Decoherence and Purification Constraints

Wenhan Li, Shiyu Zhang

Long-distance quantum communication requires reliable entanglement distribution, but direct generation with protocols such as Barrett--Kok suffers from exponentially decreasing success probability with distance, making it impractical over hundreds of kilometers. Quantum repeaters address this by segmenting the channel and combining entanglement generation, swapping, and purification. In this work, we present a simulation framework for chain-based repeaters under continuous-time depolarizing noise. Our model implements heralded entanglement generation, Bell-state swapping, and multi-round purification, with configurable chain length, noise levels, and purification depth. Numerical results highlight how memory decoherence constrains performance, how purification mitigates fidelity loss, and how time and entanglement costs scale with distance. While simplified, the framework offers a flexible tool for exploring trade-offs in repeater design and provides a basis for extensions toward more complex network scenarios.

Feasible measurement-based entanglement purification in linear optics

Peishun Yan, Lan Zhou, Wei Zhong +1 more

Entanglement purification is used to distill high quality entangled states from several noisy low quality entangled states, and it plays a key role in quantum repeater. The measurement-based entanglement purification protocol (MB-EPP) does not require local two-qubit gates or single-particle measurements on the noisy pairs and may offer significant advantages compared with the gate-based EPPs. We present an alternative MB-EPP in linear optics. Subsequently, we provide a detailed analysis on the realization of this MB-EPP using spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) sources. By delicately designing the optical circuits, the double-pair emission noise caused by SPDC sources can be eliminated automatically. Combined with suitable quantum memory and entanglement swapping, this MB-EPP may have application potential in the implementation of a practical measurement-based quantum repeater.
