A spacetime derivation of the Lorentzian OPE inversion formula

Abstract

Abstract Caron-Huot has recently given an interesting formula that determines OPE data in a conformal field theory in terms of a weighted integral of the four-point function over a Lorentzian region of cross-ratio space. We give a new derivation of this formula based on Wick rotation in spacetime rather than cross-ratio space. The derivation is simple in two dimensions but more involved in higher dimensions. We also derive a Lorentzian inversion formula in one dimension that sheds light on previous observations about the chaos regime in the SYK model.

Light-ray operators in conformal field theory

Petr Kravchuk

We argue that every CFT contains light-ray operators labeled by a continuous spin J. When J is a positive integer, light-ray operators become integrals of local operators over a null line. However for non-integer J , light-ray operators are genuinely nonlocal and give the analytic continuation of CFT data in spin described by Caron-Huot. A key role in our construction is played by a novel set of intrinsically Lorentzian integral transforms that generalize the shadow transform. Matrix elements of light-ray operators can be computed via the integral of a double-commutator against a conformal block. This gives a simple derivation of Caron-Huot’s Lorentzian OPE inversion formula and lets us generalize it to arbitrary four-point functions. Furthermore, we show that light-ray operators enter the Regge limit of CFT correlators, and generalize conformal Regge theory to arbitrary four-point functions. The average null energy operator is an important example of a light-ray operator. Using our construction, we find a new proof of the average null energy condition (ANEC), and furthermore generalize the ANEC to continuous spin.

Spin in Conformal Field Theory

Petr Kravchuk

We study various questions related to operators with spin in quantum conformal field theory in dimensions higher than two. In particular, we classify conformally-invariant tensor structures which appear in correlation functions of local operators and develop tools for computation of conformal blocks which contribute to these functions. We study the crossing equations for four-point functions using numerical and analytical techniques. Finally, we explore the question of analytic continuation of local operators in spin, which leads us to a simple proof of a generalized Lorentzian inversion formula.

Thermal one-point functions: CFT’s with fermions, large d and large spin

Justin R. David, Srijan Kumar

A bstract We apply the OPE inversion formula on thermal two-point functions of fermions to obtain thermal one-point function of fermion bi-linears appearing in the corresponding OPE. We primarily focus on the OPE channel which contains the stress tensor of the theory. We apply our formalism to the mean field theory of fermions and verify that the inversion formula reproduces the spectrum as well as their corresponding thermal one-point functions. We then examine the large N critical Gross-Neveu model in d = 2 k + 1 dimensions with k even and at finite temperature. We show that stress tensor evaluated from the inversion formula agrees with that evaluated from the partition function at the critical point. We demonstrate the expectation values of 3 different classes of higher spin currents are all related to each other by numerical constants, spin and the thermal mass. We evaluate the ratio of the thermal expectation values of higher spin currents at the critical point to the Gaussian fixed point or the Stefan-Boltzmann result, both for the large N critical O ( N ) model and the Gross-Neveu model in odd dimensions. This ratio is always less than one and it approaches unity on increasing the spin with the dimension d held fixed. The ratio however approaches zero when the dimension d is increased with the spin held fixed.

More on supersymmetric and 2d analogs of the SYK model

Jeff Murugan, Douglas Stanford, Edward Witten

In this paper, we explore supersymmetric and 2d analogs of the SYK model. We begin by working out a basis of (super)conformal eigenfunctions appropriate for expanding a four-point function. We use this to clarify some details of the 1d supersymmetric SYK model. We then introduce new bosonic and supersymmetric analogs of SYK in two dimensions. These theories consist of N fields interacting with random q-field interactions. Although models built entirely from bosons appear to be problematic, we find a supersymmetric model that flows to a large N CFT with interaction strength of order one. We derive an integral formula for the four-point function at order 1/N , and use it to compute the central charge, chaos exponent and some anomalous dimensions. We describe a problem that arises if one tries to find a 2d SYK-like CFT with a continuous global symmetry.

Random statistics of OPE coefficients and Euclidean wormholes

Alexandre Belin, Jan De Boer A

Abstract We propose an ansatz for OPE coefficients in chaotic conformal field theories which generalizes the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and describes any OPE coefficient involving heavy operators as a random variable with a Gaussian distribution. In two dimensions this ansatz enables us to compute higher moments of the OPE coefficients and analyse two and four-point functions of OPE coefficients, which we relate to genus-2 partition functions and their squares. We compare the results of our ansatz to solutions of Einstein gravity in AdS 3 , including a Euclidean wormhole that connects two genus-2 surfaces. Our ansatz reproduces the non-perturbative correction of the wormhole, giving it a physical interpretation in terms of OPE statistics. We propose that calculations performed within the semi-classical low-energy gravitational theory are only sensitive to the random nature of OPE coefficients, which explains the apparent lack of factorization in products of partition functions.
