Application of Shemesh theorem to quantum channels

Abstract

Completely positive maps are useful in modeling the discrete evolution of quantum systems. Spectral properties of operators associated with such maps are relevant for determining the asymptotic dynamics of quantum systems subjected to multiple interactions described by the same quantum channel. We discuss a connection between the properties of the peripheral spectrum of completely positive and trace preserving map and the algebra generated by its Kraus operators A(A1,…,AK). By applying the Shemesh and Amitsur-Levitzki theorems to analyse the structure of the algebra A(A1,…,AK), one can predict the asymptotic dynamics for a class of operations.

Multiplicative properties of quantum channels

Mizanur Rahaman

Abstract In this paper, we study the multiplicative behaviour of quantum channels, mathematically described by trace preserving, completely positive maps on matrix algebras. It turns out that the multiplicative domain of a unital quantum channel has a close connection to its spectral properties. A structure theorem (theorem 2.5), which reveals the automorphic property of an arbitrary unital quantum channel on a subalgebra, is presented. Various classes of quantum channels (irreducible, primitive, etc) are then analysed in terms of this stabilising subalgebra. The notion of the multiplicative index of a unital quantum channel is introduced, which measures the number of times a unital channel needs to be composed with itself for the multiplicative algebra to stabilise. We show that the maps that have trivial multiplicative domains are dense in completely bounded norm topology in the set of all unital completely positive maps. Some applications in quantum information theory are discussed.

Operator algebra generalization of a theorem of Watrous and mixed unitary quantum channels

David W. Kribs, Jeremy Levick, Rajesh Pereira +1 more

Abstract We establish an operator algebra generalization of Watrous’ theorem (Watrous 2009 Quantum Inf. Comput. 9 403–413) on mixing unital quantum channels (completely positive trace-preserving maps) with the completely depolarizing channel, wherein the more general objects of focus become (finite-dimensional) von Neumann algebras, the unique trace preserving conditional expectation onto the algebra, the group of unitary operators in the commutant of the algebra, and the fixed point algebra of the channel. As an application, we obtain a result on the asymptotic theory of quantum channels, showing that all unital channels are eventually mixed unitary. We also discuss the special case of the diagonal algebra in detail, and draw connections to the theory of correlation matrices and Schur product maps.

Shemesh Theorem and Its Relation With the Zero-Error Quantum Information Theory

Marciel Medeiros de Oliveira, Micael Andrade Dias, Andresso da Silva +1 more

In this paper, our objective is to establish results that connect Shemesh theorem with quantum zero-error information theory. To achieve this, we will first introduce definitions and properties related to the zero-error capacity of a quantum channel, with particular emphasis on demonstrating that the eigenstates common to the Kraus operators representing the quantum channel are fixed points. This result has previously been employed to develop a test for determining whether a quantum channel possesses positive zero-error capacity. In this work, we demonstrate that the eigenstates common to the Kraus operators representing the channel reside within the Shemesh subspace. Consequently, the fixed points of the quantum channel act as a bridge between Shemesh theorem and quantum zero-error information theory, thereby enabling the derivation of new results on the zero-error capacity of quantum channels.

Infinite dimensional generalizations of Choi’s Theorem

Shmuel Friedland

In this paper we give a simple sequence of necessary and sufficient finite dimensional conditions for a positive map between certain subspaces of bounded linear operators on separable Hilbert spaces to be completely positive. These criterions are natural generalization of Choi’s characterization for completely positive maps between pairs of linear operators on finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. We apply our conditions to a completely positive map between two trace class operators on separable Hilbert spaces. A completely positive map μ is called a quantum channel, if it is trace preserving, and μ is called a quantum subchannel if it decreases the trace of a positive operator. We give simple neccesary and sufficient condtions for μ to be a quantum subchannel. We show that μ is a quantum subchannel if and only if it hasHellwig-Kraus representation. The last result extends the classical results of Kraus and the recent result of Holevo for characterization of a quantum channel.

Lectures on Open Quantum Systems

Marco Merkli, Ángel Neira

These notes are a short introduction to the mathematical theory of open quantum systems. They are meant to serve as an entry point into a broad research area which has applications across the quantum sciences dealing with systems subjected to external noise. The guiding idea is to let the key structures of the theory emerge from a concrete model. By working through the dissipative Jaynes-Cummings model the reader will dis- cover explicitly how irreversible dynamics arises from a unitary system-reservoir evolution. The notions of the continuous mode limit, correlation functions, spectral density appear in a natural manner and lead to the evolution equation of the open system in form of a master equation. This sets the stage for the more general analysis of completely positive, trace preserving (CPTP) maps and the study of quantum dynamical semigroups. We motivate and prove the Kraus representation theorem, the dilation theorem and the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) theorem. Working through the exercises (for which full solutions are supplied) will reinforce the ideas introduced in the main text.
