Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate photonic tensor network states by sequential scattering of photons in waveguide QED systems. We show that sequential scatterings can convert a series of unentangled photons into any type of matrix product states. We also demonstrate the possibility of generating projected entangled pair states with an arbitrary graph structure by photon re-scattering.

Generation of photonic tensor network states with circuit QED

Zhi-Yuan Wei, J. I. Cirac, Daniel Malz

We propose a circuit QED platform and protocol to generate microwave photonic tensor network states deterministically. We first show that using a microwave cavity as ancilla and a transmon qubit as emitter is a good platform to produce photonic matrix product states. The ancilla cavity combines a large controllable Hilbert space with a long coherence time, which we predict translates into a high number of entangled photons and states with a high bond dimension. Going beyond this paradigm, we then consider a natural generalization of this platform, in which several cavity-qubit pairs are coupled to form a chain. The photonic states thus produced feature a two-dimensional entanglement structure and can be interpreted as radial plaquette projected entangled pair states [Wei, Malz, and Cirac, Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 010607 (2022)], which include many paradigmatic states, such as the broad class of isometric tensor network states, graph states, and string-net states.

Photonic-Fock-state scattering in a waveguide-QED system and their correlation functions

Yuecheng Shen, Jung‐Tsung Shen

We investigate the problem of arbitrary photonic-Fock-state scattering in a waveguide-QED system which consists of a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a two-level system. By imposing the open boundary conditions that directly describe the physical settings, we construct a complete set of eigenstates of the system, and elucidate the mathematical structures of the eigenstates. In particular, we show that the eigenstates include a set of multiphoton extended states and multiphoton bound states, formed by all possible partitions of the photon number $N$. The total number of the eigenstates is exactly described by the integer number partition function $Z(N)$. Using the set of eigenstates, we form the scattering matrix, which facilitates the calculations of the scattered photon states, for the scattering processes. With the scattered photon states, we compute the photon correlation functions that manifestly exhibit the bunching and antibunching behaviors in the scattered photon states. As a concrete example, we discuss in detail with a focus on the three-photon Fock state. Such a capability to generate photonic entanglement from unentangled Fock states will have broad applications in quantum information processing.

Analytic Few Photon Scattering in Waveguide QED for Entanglement Generation

David L. Hurst, Pieter Kok

We develop an approach to light-matter coupling in waveguide QED based upon scattering amplitudes evaluated via Dyson series. For optical states containing more than single photons, terms in this series become increasingly complex and we provide a diagrammatic recipe for their evaluation, which is capable of yielding analytic results. Our method fully specifies a combined emitter-optical state that permits investigation of matter-matter entanglement generation protocols. We use our expressions to study a scheme for entangling spatially separated two-level systems and find that an entangled two-photon input provides a clear advantage over a separable single photon state.

Sequential generation of matrix-product states in cavity QED

Christian Schön, Klemens Hammerer, Michael M. Wolf +2 more

We study the sequential generation of entangled photonic and atomic multiqubit states in the realm of cavity QED. We extend the work of C. Sch\"on et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 110503 (2005)], where it was shown that all states generated in a sequential manner can be classified efficiently in terms of matrix-product states. In particular, we consider two scenarios: photonic multiqubit states sequentially generated at the cavity output of a single-photon source and atomic multiqubit states generated by their sequential interaction with the same cavity mode.

Sequential Generation of Projected Entangled-Pair States

Zhi-Yuan Wei, Daniel Malz, J. I. Cirac

We introduce plaquette projected entangled-pair states, a class of states in a lattice that can be generated by applying sequential unitaries acting on plaquettes of overlapping regions. They satisfy area-law entanglement, possess long-range correlations, and naturally generalize other relevant classes of tensor network states. We identify a subclass that can be more efficiently prepared in a radial fashion and that contains the family of isometric tensor network states [M. P. Zaletel and F. Pollmann, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 037201 (2020)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.124.037201]. We also show how this subclass can be efficiently prepared using an array of photon sources.
