Abstract

We provide an analytical expression for the entanglement decay of initially maximally entangled orbital-angular-momentum biphoton states, when scattered off an obstruction. We show that the decay is controlled by the diffraction-induced mutual overlap between the diffracted field modes, and quantify its dependence on the size and position of the obstruction.

Diffraction-induced entanglement loss of high-dimensional orbital angular-momentum states

Kuntuo Zhu, Zhangdong Ye

Abstract The entanglement loss of high-dimensional entangled orbital angular-momentum states in far-field diffraction by a circular aperture was studied theoretically. A general expression for high-dimensional entanglement decay is provided. The results show that the loss depends on both the parity and the magnitude of the orbital angular-momentum index, and it is not affected by a small misalignment error of the aperture.

Universal entanglement loss induced by angular uncertainty

Giacomo Sorelli, Vyacheslav Shatokhin, Andreas Buchleitner

Abstract We study the diffraction of two maximally entangled qubits encoded into spatial modes of light with orbital angular momenta ±ℏ l 0 , on angular apertures. Exploiting the uncertainty relation between angular position and momentum, we quantify the diffraction-induced entanglement loss, for different l 0 , as a function of the angular uncertainty Δ ϕ induced by the apertures. We demonstrate that the degradation of entanglement follows a universal law parametrised by the product l 0 Δ ϕ alone.

Universal entanglement decay of photonic-orbital-angular-momentum qubit states in atmospheric turbulence

Nina Leonhard, Vyacheslav Shatokhin, Andreas Buchleitner

We consider the propagation of two photonic qubits, initially maximally entangled in their orbital angular momenta (OAM), across a weakly turbulent atmosphere. By introducing the phase correlation length of an OAM beam, we show that the photonic entanglement exhibits a universal exponential decay.

Resilience of orbital-angular-momentum photonic qubits and effects on hybrid entanglement

The orbital angular momentum of light (OAM) provides a promising approach for the implementation of multidimensional states (qudits) for quantum-information purposes. In order to characterize the degradation undergone by the information content of qubits encoded in a bidimensional subspace of the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom of photons, we study how the state fidelity is affected by a transverse obstruction placed along the propagation direction of the light beam. Emphasis is placed on the effects of planar and radial hard-edged aperture functions on the state fidelity of Laguerre-Gaussian transverse modes and the entanglement properties of polarization-OAM hybrid-entangled photon pairs.

Universal entanglement decay of photonic orbital angular momentum qubit states in atmospheric turbulence: an analytical treatment

David Bachmann, Vyacheslav Shatokhin, Andreas Buchleitner

Abstract We study the entanglement evolution of photonic orbital angular momentum qubit states with opposite azimuthal indices l 0 , in a weakly turbulent atmosphere. Using asymptotic methods, we deduce analytical expressions for the amplitude of turbulence-induced crosstalk between the modes l 0 and − l 0 . Furthermore, we analytically establish distinct, universal entanglement decay laws for Kolmogorov’s turbulence model and for two approximations thereof.
