Quantum radiative corrections for a model in NMR in quantum electrodynamics

Abstract

In this article, we are interested in a spin model including the quantized electromagnetic field (photons). With this model of quantum electrodynamics (QED) related to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) we give explicit quantum radiative corrections of the time evolution for the spin observables, for the electric and magnetic fields observables and for the photon number observable. As a by-product, this underlines that Bloch equations are the semiclassical limit of the model in QED considered here. In addition, transition probabilities for the same model are investigated.

Infinite dimensional semiclassical analysis and applications to a model in NMR

Laurent Amour, Lisette Jager, Jean Nourrigat

We are interested in this paper with the connection between the dynamics of a model related to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) with its classical counterpart known as the Maxwell-Bloch equations. The model in QFT is a model of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) considering fixed spins interacting with the quantized electromagnetic field in an external constant magnetic field. This model is close to the common spin-boson model. The classical model goes back to F. Bloch [15] in 1946. Our goal is not only to study the derivation of the Maxwell-Bloch equations but to also establish a semiclassical asymptotic expansion of arbitrary high orders with control of the error terms of this standard nonlinear classical motion equations. This provides therefore quantum corrections of any order in powers of the semiclassical parameter of the Bloch equations. Besides, the asymptotic expansion for the photon number is also analyzed and a law describing the photon number time evolution is written down involving the radiation field polarization. Since the quantum photon state Hilbert space (radiation field) is infinite dimensional we are thus concerned in this article with the issue of semiclassical calculus in an infinite dimensional setting. In this regard, we are studying standard notions as Wick and anti-Wick quantizations, heat operator, Beals characterization theorem and compositions of symbols in the infinite dimensional context which can have their own interest.

Hamiltonian systems and semiclassical dynamics for interacting spins in QED

Laurent Amour, Jean Nourrigat

In this article, we consider fixed spin-1/2 particles interacting through the quantized electromagnetic field in a constant magnetic field. We give approximate evolutions of coherent states. This uses spins-photon classical Hamiltonian mechanics. These approximations enable to derive that the approximate average fields and spins follow Maxwell-Bloch equations with a current density coming from spins. In addition, we obain a law concerning the evolution of the approximate average number of photons. Next, we provide stationary points of the spins-photon Hamiltonian when the spin particles belong to an orthogonal plane to the constant magnetic field. This allows for the construction of quasimodes with spins colinear to the constant magnetic field. Finally, a quasimode with an arbitrary high accuracy is built up and its first order radiative correction is computed.

Lindblad approximation and spin relaxation in quantum electrodynamics

Laurent Amour, Jean Nourrigat

Abstract This article is concerned with the time evolution of spin observables for generalized spin boson models. This applies in particular to a model of nuclear magnetic resonance, namely a 1 2 -spin particle in a constant external magnetic field and in interaction with the quantized electromagnetic field (photons). We derive a Lindblad (or GKLS) type approximation of the spin dynamics initially in a photon vacuum state together with a precise control of the error coming from this approximation. The error term is bounded by g 2 where g is the coupling constant of the spin–photon interaction. The point here is the uniformity in time t > 0 of this error control.

A quantum description of radiation damping and the free induction signal in magnetic resonance

James S. Tropp

We apply the methods of cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED), to obtain a microscopic and fully quantum-mechanical picture of radiation damping in magnetic resonance, and the nascent formation of the free induction signal. Numerical solution of the Tavis-Cummings model - i.e., multiple spins 1∕2 coupled to a lossless single-mode cavity - shows in fine detail the transfer of Zeeman energy, via spin coherence, to excite the cavity - represented here by a quantized LC resonator. The case of a single spin is also solved analytically. Although the motion of the Bloch vector is non-classical, we nonetheless show that the quantum mechanical Rabi nutation frequency (as enhanced by cavity coupling and stimulated emission) gives realistic estimates of macroscopic signal strength and the radiation damping constant in nuclear magnetic resonance. We also show how to introduce dissipation: cavity losses by means of a master equation, and relaxation by the phenomenological method of Bloch. The failure to obtain the full Bloch equations (unless semi-classical conditions are imposed on the cavity) is discussed in light of similar issues arising in CQED (and in earlier work in magnetic resonance as well), as are certain problems relative to quantization of the electromagnetic near-field.

Quantum electrodynamic equations for magnetic resonance- and optical spectroscopic transitions have been for the first time obtained. New phenomena - stochastic electrical and magnetic spin wave resonances are predicted to be the effects of EM-field quantization.

Coherent states in Magnetic Resonance

Navin Khaneja

In NMR experiments, interaction of quantized radio-frequency (rf) field leads to entanglement of nuclear spin with the electromagnetic field. In an entangled state, the nuclear spins are depolarized with no net magnetization, which cannot give a detectable signal in inductive detection. We show that when the electromagnetic field is in coherent state, inductive detection is just true. We develop the mathematics to study the evolution of a coherent rf-field with a sample of all polarized spins. We show that evolution can be solved in closed form as a separable state of rf-field and spin ensemble, where spin ensemble evolves according to Bloch equations in an rf field. We extend the analysis and results to a spin ensemble with Boltzmann polarization. The rabi frequency and coupling strength of spins to rf-field depends on number state of the rf-field. We show that in interaction with a coherent rf-field, this variation in coupling strength, introduces negligible error.
