Abstract

In this paper, we study an SYK model and an SYK-like tensor model with global symmetry. First, we study the large N expansion of the bi-local collective action for the SYK model with manifest global symmetry. We show that the global symmetry is enhanced to a local symmetry at strong coupling limit, and the corresponding symmetry algebra is the Kac-Moody algebra. The emergent local symmetry together with the emergent reparametrization is spontaneously and explicit broken. This leads to a low energy effective action. We evaluate four point functions, and obtain spectrum of our model. We derive the low energy effective action and analyze the chaotic behavior of the four point functions. We also consider the recent 3D gravity conjecture for our model. We also introduce an SYK-like tensor model with global symmetry. We first study chaotic behavior of four point functions in various channels for the rank-3 case, and generalize this into a rank-(q − 1) tensor model.

Supersymmetric SYK model with global symmetry

Prithvi Narayan, Junggi Yoon

Abstract In this paper, we introduce an $$ \mathcal{N}=1 $$ N = 1 supersymmetric SYK model with SO(q) global symmetry. We study the large N expansion of the bi-local collective action of our model. At strong coupling limit, this model exhibits a super-reparametrization symmetry, and the SO(q) global symmetry is enhanced to a $$ \widehat{\mathrm{SO}}(q) $$ SO ^ q local symmetry. The corresponding symmetry algebra is the semi-direct product of the super-Virasoro and the super-Kac-Moody algebras. These emergent symmetries are spontaneously and explicitly broken, which leads to a low energy effective action: super-Schwarzian action plus an action of a super-particle on the SO(q) group manifold. We analyze the zero mode contributions to the chaotic behavior of four point functions in various SO(q) channels. In singlet channel, we show that the out-of-time-ordered correlators related to bosonic bi-locals exhibit the saturation of the chaos bound as in the non-SUSY SYK model. On the other hand, we find that the ones with fermionic bi-locals in the singlet channel have $$ \frac{\pi }{\beta } $$ π β Lyapunov exponent. In the anti-symmetric channel, we demonstrate that the out-of-time-ordered correlator related to a SO(q) generator grows linearly in time. We also compute the non-zero mode contributions which give consistent corrections to the leading Lyapunov exponents from the zero modes.

SYK and SYK-like Models

Pyry Kuusela

In this thesis, we discuss the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and tensor models with similar properties. The SYK model is a quantum field theoretical model describing N interacting fermions, whose coupling constants are drawn from a Gaussian ensemble. Noteworthy properties of the SYK model include that it is analytically solvable in the large N limit, that it exhibits conformal symmetry at low energies and that it is maximally chaotic. These properties are remarkably similar to those of a 1 + 1 dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. It has been conjectured the SYK model is a holographic dual to the black hole. We introduce a set of Feynman rules for the SYK model. Using these rules, we show that in the large N limit the diagrams that contribute to the two-point function are all so-called iterated melonic diagrams. This allows us to derive a Schwinger-Dyson equation for the two-point function, which, in turn, can be solved exactly in the infrared limit. We also consider the four-point function. In the large N limit, the leading-order correction to the four-point function is given by so-called ladder diagrams. This allows us to derive an explicit expression for the four-point function. The SYK model can be generalized in a few different ways. In this thesis, we consider the generalization where the fermions act through q-fold interactions instead of quartic interactions present in the original SYK model. In particular, considerable simplifications can be achieved in the q → ∞ limit or q = 2 case, which we study. While the SYK model has many interesting properties, its random couplings limit its usability especially as a dual to a Schwarzschild black hole. We therefore also consider tensor models which do not have this drawback but manage to preserve the interesting properties of the SYK model. In the last chapter, we briefly inspect the chaotic behaviour of the SYK and tensor models and derive Lyapunov exponent for them. It can be shown that the expression saturates an upper bound for Lyapunov exponents of a large class of quantum systems, including large N systems.

SYK-like tensor models on the lattice

Prithvi Narayan, Junggi Yoon

We study large N tensor models on the lattice without disorder. We introduce techniques which can be applied to a wide class of models, and illustrate it by studying some specific rank-3 tensor models. In particular, we study Klebanov-Tarnopolsky model on lattice, Gurau-Witten model (by treating it as a tensor model on four sites) and also a new model which interpolates between these two models. In each model, we evaluate various four point functions at large N and strong coupling, and discuss their spectrum and long time behaviors. We find similarities as well as differences from SYK model. We also generalize our analysis to rank-D tensor models where we obtain analogous results as D = 3 case for the four point functions which we computed. For D > 5, we are able to compute the next-to-subleading $$ \frac{1}{N} $$ corrections for a specific four point function.

Investigations on the SYK Model and its Dual Gravity Theory

Kenta Suzuki

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a quantum mechanical many body system with random all-to-all interactions on fermionic N sites (N>>1). This model is shown to saturate the known maximal chaos bound of many body system and then based on this observation it is conjectured to be dual to a quantum black hole in the sense of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this dissertation, we show that the large N physics of the SYK model is systematically described by a single bi-local field. In particular, we emphasize the appearance of the emergent conformal reparametrization symmetry at the critical IR fixed point and the corresponding divergent contribution of the symmetry modes in the propagator of the bi-local field. We discuss non-linear-level derivation of the zero modes effective action, which is given by the Schwarzian derivative for finite reparametrization symmetry. Besides the symmetry modes, which correspond to the dilaton-gravity sector in the dual AdS theory, the SYK model also predicts an infinite tower of matter fields in AdS_2. We demonstrate that this infinite spectrum can be nicely packaged into a single field in 3-dimensional space-time. Finally, we consider the question of identifying the dual space-time of the SYK model. Focusing on the signature of emergent space-time of the (Euclidean) model, we explain the need for non-local (Radon-type) transformations on external legs of n-point Green's functions. This results in a dual theory with Euclidean AdS signature with additional leg-factors. We speculate that these factors incorporate the coupling of additional bulk states similar to the discrete states of 2D string theory.

Note on global symmetry and SYK model

Junyu Liu, Yehao Zhou

Abstract The goal of this note is to explore the behavior of effective action in the SYK model with general continuous global symmetries. A global symmetry will decompose the whole Hamiltonian of a many-body system to several single charge sectors. For the SYK model, the effective action near the saddle point is given as the free product of the Schwarzian action part and the free action of the group element moving in the group manifold. With a detailed analysis in the free sigma model, we prove a modified version of Peter-Weyl theorem that works for generic spin structure. As a conclusion, we could make a comparison between the thermodynamics and the spectral form factors between the whole theory and the single charge sector, to make predictions on the SYK model and see how symmetry affects the chaotic behavior in certain timescales.

Thickening and sickening the SYK model

Dmitri V. Khveshchenko

We discuss higher dimensional generalizations of the 0 + 1-dimensional Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that has recently become the focus of intensive interdisciplinary studies by, both, the condensed matter and field-theoretical communities. Unlike the previous constructions where multiple SYK copies would be coupled to each other and/or hybridized with itinerant fermions via spatially short-ranged random hopping processes, we study algebraically varying long-range (spatially and/or temporally) correlated random couplings in the general d+1 dimensions. Such pertinent topics as translationally-invariant strong-coupling solutions, emergent reparametrization symmetry, effective action for fluctuations, chaotic behavior, and diffusive transport (or a lack thereof) are all addressed. We find that the most appealing properties of the original SYK model that suggest the existence of its 1+1-dimensional holographic gravity dual do not survive the aforementioned generalizations, thus lending no additional support to the hypothetical broad (including’non-AdSd+2/non-CFTd+1’) holographic correspondence.
