Abstract

The quantum Rényi relative entropies play a prominent role in quantum information theory, finding applications in characterizing error exponents and strong converse exponents for quantum hypothesis testing and quantum communication theory. On a different thread, quantum Gaussian states have been intensely investigated theoretically, motivated by the fact that they are more readily accessible in the laboratory than are other, more exotic quantum states. In this paper, we derive formulas for the quantum Rényi relative entropies of quantum Gaussian states. We consider both the traditional (Petz) Rényi relative entropy as well as the more recent sandwiched Rényi relative entropy, finding formulas that are expressed solely in terms of the mean vectors and covariance matrices of the underlying quantum Gaussian states. Our development handles the hitherto elusive case for the Petz–Rényi relative entropy when the Rényi parameter is larger than one. Finally, we also derive a formula for the max-relative entropy of two quantum Gaussian states, and we discuss some applications of the formulas derived here.

A limit of the quantum Rényi divergence

Nilanjana Datta, Felix Leditzky

Recently, an interesting quantity called the quantum Rényi divergence (or 'sandwiched' Rényi relative entropy) was defined for pairs of positive semi-definite operators ρ and σ. It depends on a parameter α and acts as a parent quantity for other relative entropies which have important operational significance in quantum information theory: the quantum relative entropy and the min- and max-relative entropies. There is, however, another relative entropy, called the 0-relative Rényi entropy, which plays a key role in the analysis of various quantum information-processing tasks in the one-shot setting. We prove that the 0-relative Rényi entropy is obtainable from the quantum Rényi divergence only if ρ and σ have equal supports. This, along with existing results in the literature, suggests that it suffices to consider two essential parent quantities from which operationally relevant entropic quantities can be derived—the quantum Rényi divergence with parameter α ⩾ 1/2, and the α-relative Rényi entropy with α ∈ [0, 1).

Maximal Rényi Relative Entropy for $α>2$

Roberto Rubboli

Quantum relative entropies play a fundamental role in quantum information theory. In the classical setting, Rényi relative entropies constitute, up to linear combinations, the most general class of relative entropies, naturally motivating the search for their minimal and maximal quantum extensions. The minimal extension is known to be the reverse sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for $α\in[0,1/2)$ and the sandwiched Rényi relative entropy for $α\geq 1/2$. In contrast, the maximal extension had previously been identified only for $α\in[0,2]$, where it is given by the geometric Rényi relative entropy. In this work, we complete this characterization by proving that for $α>2$, the maximal extension is given by the $α$-$z$ Rényi relative entropy with $z=α-1$. As an application, we determine when an energy-incoherent state can be transformed into an energy-coherent state by a Gibbs-preserving operation assisted by an uncorrelated catalyst, thereby fully characterizing the coherence-generating power of this class of operations in the catalytic setting.

Quantum Fisher information matrices from Rényi relative entropies

Mark M. Wilde

Quantum generalizations of the Fisher information are important in quantum information science, with applications in high energy and condensed matter physics and in quantum estimation theory, machine learning, and optimization. One can derive a quantum generalization of the Fisher information matrix in a natural way as the Hessian matrix arising in a Taylor expansion of a smooth divergence. Such an approach is appealing for quantum information theorists, given the ubiquity of divergences in quantum information theory. In contrast to the classical case, there is not a unique quantum generalization of the Fisher information matrix, similar to how there is not a unique quantum generalization of the relative entropy or the Rényi relative entropy. In this paper, I derive information matrices arising from the log-Euclidean, $α$-$z$, and geometric Rényi relative entropies, with the main technical tool for doing so being the method of divided differences for calculating matrix derivatives. Interestingly, for all non-negative values of the Rényi parameter $α$, the log-Euclidean Rényi relative entropy leads to the Kubo-Mori information matrix, and the geometric Rényi relative entropy leads to the right-logarithmic derivative Fisher information matrix. Thus, the resulting information matrices obey the data-processing inequality for all non-negative values of the Rényi parameter $α$ even though the original quantities do not. Additionally, I derive and establish basic properties of $α$-$z$ information matrices resulting from the $α$-$z$ Rényi relative entropies. For parameterized thermal states and time-evolved states, I establish formulas for their $α$-$z$ information matrices and hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for estimating them, with applications in quantum Boltzmann machine learning.

On quantum Rényi entropies: A new generalization and some properties

Martin Müller-Lennert, Frédéric Dupuis, Oleg Szehr +2 more

The Rényi entropies constitute a family of information measures that generalizes the well-known Shannon entropy, inheriting many of its properties. They appear in the form of unconditional and conditional entropies, relative entropies, or mutual information, and have found many applications in information theory and beyond. Various generalizations of Rényi entropies to the quantum setting have been proposed, most prominently Petz's quasi-entropies and Renner's conditional min-, max-, and collision entropy. However, these quantum extensions are incompatible and thus unsatisfactory. We propose a new quantum generalization of the family of Rényi entropies that contains the von Neumann entropy, min-entropy, collision entropy, and the max-entropy as special cases, thus encompassing most quantum entropies in use today. We show several natural properties for this definition, including data-processing inequalities, a duality relation, and an entropic uncertainty relation.
