Abstract

We study the low-frequency dynamics of periodically driven one-dimensional systems hosting Floquet topological phases. We show, both analytically and numerically, in the low frequency limit Ω→0, the topological invariants of a chirally symmetric driven system exhibit universal fluctuations. While the topological invariants in this limit nearly vanish on average over a small range of frequencies, we find that they follow a universal Gaussian distribution with a width that scales as 1/sqrt[Ω]. We explain this scaling based on a diffusive structure of the winding numbers of the Floquet-Bloch evolution operator at low frequency. We also find that the maximum quasienergy gap remains finite and scales as Ω^{2}. Thus, we argue that the adiabatic limit of a Floquet topological insulator is highly structured, with universal fluctuations persisting down to very low frequencies.

Universal transport in periodically driven systems without long-lived quasiparticles

Iliya Esin, Clemens Kuhlenkamp, Gil Refael +3 more

An intriguing regime of universal charge transport at high entropy density has been proposed for periodically driven interacting one-dimensional systems with Bloch bands separated by a large single-particle band gap. For weak interactions, a simple picture based on well-defined Floquet quasiparticles suggests that the system should host a quasisteady state current that depends only on the populations of the system's Floquet-Bloch bands and their associated quasienergy winding numbers. Here we show that such topological transport persists into the strongly interacting regime where the single-particle lifetime becomes shorter than the drive period. Analytically, we show that the value of the current is insensitive to interaction-induced band renormalizations and lifetime broadening when certain conditions are met by the system's nonequilibrium distribution function. We show that these conditions correspond to a quasisteady state. We support these predictions through numerical simulation of a system of strongly interacting fermions in a periodically modulated chain of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dots. Our paper establishes universal transport at high entropy density as a robust far from equilibrium topological phenomenon, which can be readily realized with cold atoms in optical lattices. Dynamic winding number for Floquet topological insulators with arbitrarily driving frequencies

Bo Zhu, Tan Zhi, Yongguan Ke +1 more

Winding number and Zak phase, as topological invariants, play crucial roles in characterizing the topological phases of one-dimensional Floquet topological insulators. It is difficult to directly detect Floquet topological invariants with a unified scheme, especially for low driving frequencies. Here, by defining the dynamic winding number based on the time-averaged spin textures, we propose to use it to characterize one-dimensional Floquet topological phases with arbitrarily varying frequencies. In the high-frequency regime, both the conventional winding number and Zak phase can be fully determined by measuring the dynamic winding number of time-averaged spin textures, regardless of initial states and initial phases. In the low-frequency regime, only conventional winding number can accurately describe the system's topological phase due to the presence of large topological numbers, the Zak phase only captures the parity of the winding number and fails to characterize the number of topological edge states. However, one can still correctly characterize the Floquet topological phases through our dynamic winding number approach, in which stroboscopic measurement of spin textures is needed and the initial phases should guarantee chiral symmetry of the time-evolution operator. Our paper not only clarifies the necessity of stroboscopic measurements, but also provides a general dynamic approach for the detection of Floquet topological insulators.

Topological phases in the periodically kicked Chern insulators

Fei Yang, Zheng Wei, TianMeng Li +1 more

Novel topological properties that arose in the periodically driven system are unique, in which there are two kinds of quasienergy gaps, the zero quasienergy gap and the $π$ quasienergy gap. The corresponding edge modes would traverse either the zero quasienergy gap or the $π$ quasienergy gap, or traverse both two quasienergy gaps. And the characterization of these two kinds of edge modes might not be the same. However, in this paper, we find that both the zero edge modes and the $π$ edge modes in the Floquet Chern insulators can be characterized by the same topological invariant, where the corresponding Dirac mass term is periodically kicked. Particularly, we take the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model as an illustrative example. In this model, the topology is characterized by the Floquet Chern number $C_F$, and there are six different topological phases in total, denoted as $C_F=\{-1_0,-2,-1_π,1_π,2,1_0\}$. Furthermore, we find that the Floquet operator associated with the periodically kicked Qi-Wu-Zhang model reduces to a Dirac Hamiltonian in the low-energy limit. Then, the phase diagram is uncovered by examining the topology of this Dirac Hamiltonian. Additionally, we explore the orders of topological phase transitions in the context of Floquet stationary states by analyzing the von Neumann entropy of these states. Our work provides further insights into the topological phases in periodically driven systems.

Gapless Floquet topology

Gabriel Cardoso, Hsiu-Chung Yeh, Leonid Korneev +2 more

Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases in insulators and superconductors are known for their robust edge modes, linked to bulk invariants through the bulk-boundary correspondence. While this principle traditionally applies to gapped phases, recent advances have extended it to gapless systems, where topological edge-states persist even in the absence of a bulk gap. We extend this framework to periodically driven chains with chiral symmetry, revealing the existence of topological edge zero and $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes despite the lack of bulk gaps in the quasienergy spectrum. By examining the half-period decomposition of chiral evolutions, we construct topological invariants that circumvent the need to define the Floquet Hamiltonian, making them more suitable for generalization to the gapless regime. We provide explicit examples, including generalizations of the Kitaev chain and related spin models, where localized $\ensuremath{\pi}$ modes emerge even when the bulk is gapless at the same quasienergy as the edge modes. We numerically study the effect of interactions, which give a finite lifetime to the edge modes in the thermodynamic limit with the decay rate consistent with Fermi's golden rule.

Floquet topological superconductors with many Majorana edge modes: topological invariants, entanglement spectrum and bulk-edge correspondence

Hailing Wu, Shenlin Wu, Longwen Zhou

Abstract One-dimensional (1D) Floquet topological superconductors possess two types of degenerate Majorana edge modes at zero andπquasienergies, leaving more room for the design of boundary time crystals and quantum computing schemes than their static counterparts. In this work, we discover Floquet superconducting phases with large topological invariants and arbitrarily many Majorana edge modes in periodically driven Kitaev chains (KCs). Topological winding numbers defined for the Floquet operator and Floquet entanglement Hamiltonian are found to generate consistent predictions about the phase diagram, bulk-edge correspondence and numbers of zero andπMajorana edge modes of the system under different driving protocols. The bipartite entanglement entropy further shows non-analytic behaviors around the topological transition point between different Floquet superconducting phases. These general features are demonstrated by investigating the KC with periodically kicked pairing or hopping amplitudes. Our discovery reveals the rich topological phases and many Majorana edge modes that could be brought about by periodic driving fields in 1D superconducting systems. It further introduces a unified description for a class of Floquet topological superconductors from their quasienergy bands and entanglement properties.

Disordered Chern insulator with a two-step Floquet drive

Sthitadhi Roy, G. J. Sreejith

We explore the physics of a Chern insulator subjected to a two-step Floquet drive. We analytically obtain the phase diagram and show that the system can exhibit different topological phases characterized by the presence and chirality of edge modes in the two bulk gaps of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, around 0 and $\ensuremath{\pi}$. We find that the phase of the system depends on the mean but not on the amplitude of the drive. The bulk topological invariants characterizing the phases can be extracted by mapping the unitary evolution within a time period to an energetically trivial but topologically nontrivial time evolution. An extensive numerical study of the bulk topological invariants in the presence of quenched disorder reveals transitions induced by strong disorder (i) from the different topological to trivial insulator phases and (ii) from a trivial to a topological Anderson insulator phase at intermediate disorder strengths. Careful analysis of level statistics of the quasienergy spectrum indicates a ``levitation-annihilation'' mechanism near these transitions.
