We discuss (2+1)-dimensional gapless surface theories of bulk (3+1)-dimensional topological phases, such as the BF theory at level
K, and its generalization. In particular, we put these theories on a flat (2+1)-dimensional torus
T3 parameterized by its modular parameters, and compute the partition functions obeying various twisted boundary conditions. We show the partition functions are transformed into each other under
SL(3,Z) modular transformations, and furthermore establish the bulk-boundary correspondence in (3+1) dimensions by matching the modular
S and
T matrices computed from the boundary field theories with those computed in the bulk. We also propose the three-loop braiding statistics can be studied by constructing the modular
S and
T matrices from an appropriate boundary field theory.
We analyze
2+1d and
3+1d bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of matter protected by onsite symmetry group
G by using dual bulk and boundary approaches. In the bulk, we study an effective field theory, which upon coupling to a background flat
G gauge field furnishes a purely topological response theory. The response action evaluated on certain manifolds, with appropriate choice of background gauge field, defines a set of SPT topological invariants. Further, SPTs can be gauged by summing over all isomorphism classes of flat
G gauge fields to obtain Dijkgraaf-Witten topological
G gauge theories. These topological gauge theories can be ungauged by first introducing and then proliferating defects that spoil the gauge symmetry. This mechanism is related to anyon condensation in
2+1d and condensing bosonic gauge charges in
3+1d. In the dual boundary approach, we study
1+1d and
2+1d quantum field theories that have
G 't-Hooft anomalies that can be precisely canceled by (the response theory of) the corresponding bulk SPT. We show how to construct/compute topological invariants for the bulk SPTs directly from the boundary theories. Further, we sum over boundary partition functions with different background gauge fields to construct
G characters that generate topological data for the bulk topological gauge theory. Finally, we study a
2+1d quantum field theory with a mixed ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{T/R}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{U}(1)$ anomaly where
Z2T/R is time-reversal/reflection symmetry, and the
U(1) could be a 0-form or 1-form symmetry depending on the choice of time reversal/reflection action. We briefly discuss the bulk effective action and topological response for a theory in
3+1d that cancels this anomaly. This signals the existence of SPTs in
3+1d protected by 0,1-form $\text{U}(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{T,R}$.
Symmetry fractionalization on topological excitations is one of the most remarkable quantum phenomena in topological orders with symmetry, i.e., symmetry-enriched topological phases. While much progress has been theoretically and experimentally made in two dimensions (2D), the understanding on symmetry fractionalization in 3D is far from complete. A long-standing challenge is to understand symmetry fractionalization on looplike topological excitations, which are spatially extended objects. In this paper, we construct a powerful topological-field-theoretical framework approach for 3D topological orders, which leads to a systematic characterization and classification of symmetry fractionalization. For systems with Abelian gauge groups (
Gg) and Abelian symmetry groups (
Gs), we successfully establish equivalence classes that lead to a finite number of patterns of symmetry fractionalization, although there are notoriously infinite number of Lagrangian-descriptions of the system. Based on this, we compute topologically distinct types of fractional symmetry charges carried by particles. Then, for each type, we compute topologically distinct statistical phases of braiding processes among loop excitations and external symmetry fluxes. As a result, we are able to unambiguously list all physical observables for each pattern of symmetry fractionalization. We present detailed calculations on many concrete examples. As an example, we find that the symmetry fractionalization in an untwisted ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological order with
Z2 symmetry is classified by ${({\mathbb{Z}}_{2})}^{6}\ensuremath{\bigoplus}{({\mathbb{Z}}_{2})}^{2}\ensuremath{\bigoplus}{({\mathbb{Z}}_{2})}^{2}\ensuremath{\bigoplus}{({\mathbb{Z}}_{2})}^{2}$. If the topological order is twisted, the classification reduces to
(Z2)6 in which particle excitations always carry integer charge. Inspired by the field-theoretical analysis, we find that our classification of symmetry fractionalization with twist $\ensuremath{\omega}$ can be formally organized into an algebraic formalism: ${⨁}_{{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i}}{\mathcal{H}}^{4}({G}_{g}{\ensuremath{\leftthreetimes}}_{{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i}}{G}_{s},U(1))/{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\omega}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i}),$ where anomaly-free symmetry fractionalization on particles ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i}\ensuremath{\in}{\mathcal{H}}_{non}^{2}({G}_{s},{G}_{g})$. Despite the lack of detailed dependence of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\omega}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i})$ on $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i}$, the present field-theoretical approach allows us to efficiently calculate and understand ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\omega}}({\ensuremath{\nu}}_{i})$. Several future directions are presented at the end of this paper.
Topological spin liquids can be described by topological gauge theories with global symmetry. Due to the presence of both nontrivial bulk deconfined gauge fluxes and global symmetry, topological spin liquids are examples of the so-called ``symmetry enriched topological phases'' (SETs). In this paper, we find that, in some twisted versions of topological gauge theories (with discrete Abelian gauge group
Gg), implementing a global symmetry (denoted by
Gs) is anomalous although symmetry charge carried by topological pointlike excitations is normally fractionalized and classified by the second cohomology group. To demonstrate the anomaly, we fully gauge the global symmetry, rendering a new gauge theory that is not gauge invariant. Therefore, the SET order of the ground state is anomalous, which cannot exist in the three-dimensional system alone. Such an anomalous state construction generalizes the ``2D surface topological order'' to three dimensions. A concrete example with ${G}_{g}={\mathbb{Z}}_{2}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{4}$ and
Gs=Z2 is calculated.
Topological phases of matter in (2+1) dimensions are commonly equipped with global symmetries, such as electric-magnetic duality in gauge theories and bilayer symmetry in fractional quantum Hall states. Gauging these symmetries into local dynamical ones is one way of obtaining exotic phases from conventional systems. We study this using the bulk-boundary correspondence and applying the orbifold construction to the (1+1)-dimensional edge described by a conformal field theory (CFT). Our procedure puts twisted boundary conditions into the partition function and predicts the fusion, spin, and braiding behavior of anyonic excitations after gauging. We demonstrate this for the electric-magnetic self-dual
ZN gauge theory, the twofold symmetric
SU(3)1, and the
S3-symmetric
SO(8)1 Wess-Zumino-Witten theories.
Symmetry-protected topological phases (SPT) are short-range entangled gapped states protected by global symmetry. Nontrivial SPT phases cannot be adiabatically connected to the trivial disordered state (or atomic insulator) as long as certain global symmetry
G is unbroken. At low energies, most of the two-dimensional SPTs with Abelian symmetry can be described by topological quantum field theory (TQFT) of the multicomponent Chern-Simons type. However, in contrast to the fractional quantum Hall effect where TQFT can give rise to interesting bulk anyons, TQFT for SPTs only supports trivial bulk excitations. The essential question in TQFT descriptions for SPTs is to understand how the global symmetry is implemented in the partition function. In this paper, we systematically study TQFT of three-dimensional SPTs with unitary Abelian symmetry (e.g., ${\mathbb{Z}}_{{N}_{1}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{{N}_{2}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}...$). In addition to the usual multicomponent
BF topological term at level-1, we find that there are new topological terms with quantized coefficients (e.g., ${a}^{1}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{2}\ensuremath{\wedge}d{a}^{2}$ and ${a}^{1}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{2}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{3}\ensuremath{\wedge}{a}^{4}$) in TQFT actions, where
a1,a2,... are 1-form U(1) gauge fields. These additional topological terms cannot be adiabatically turned off as long as
G is unbroken. By investigating symmetry transformations for the TQFT partition function, we end up with the classification of SPTs that is consistent with the well-known group cohomology approach. We also discuss how to gauge the global symmetry and possible TQFT descriptions of Dijkgraaf-Witten gauge theory.
