Abstract

We discuss (2+1)-dimensional gapless surface theories of bulk (3+1)-dimensional topological phases, such as the BF theory at level $\mathrm{K}$, and its generalization. In particular, we put these theories on a flat (2+1)-dimensional torus ${T}^{3}$ parameterized by its modular parameters, and compute the partition functions obeying various twisted boundary conditions. We show the partition functions are transformed into each other under $SL(3,\mathbb{Z})$ modular transformations, and furthermore establish the bulk-boundary correspondence in (3+1) dimensions by matching the modular $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ matrices computed from the boundary field theories with those computed in the bulk. We also propose the three-loop braiding statistics can be studied by constructing the modular $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ matrices from an appropriate boundary field theory.

Gauging (3+1)-dimensional topological phases: An approach from surface theories

Xiao Chen, Apoorv Tiwari, Chetan Nayak +1 more

We discuss several bosonic topological phases in (3+1) dimensions enriched by a global ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry, and gauging the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ symmetry. More specifically, following the spirit of the bulk-boundary correspondence, expected to hold in topological phases of matter in general, we consider boundary (surface) field theories and their orbifold. From the surface partition functions, we extract the modular $\mathcal{S}$ and $\mathcal{T}$ matrices and compare them with $(2+1)$-dimensional toplogical phase after dimensional reduction. As a specific example, we discuss topologically ordered phases in $(3+1)$ dimensions described by the BF topological quantum field theories, with abelian exchange statistics between pointlike and looplike quasiparticles. Once the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ charge conjugation symmetry is gauged, the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ flux becomes non-Abelian excitation. The gauged topological phases we are considering here belong to the quantum double model with non-Abelian group in $(3+1)$ dimensions.

Bosonic topological phases of matter: Bulk-boundary correspondence, symmetry protected topological invariants, and gauging

Apoorv Tiwari, Xiao Chen, Ken Shiozaki +1 more

We analyze $2+1d$ and $3+1d$ bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases of matter protected by onsite symmetry group $G$ by using dual bulk and boundary approaches. In the bulk, we study an effective field theory, which upon coupling to a background flat $G$ gauge field furnishes a purely topological response theory. The response action evaluated on certain manifolds, with appropriate choice of background gauge field, defines a set of SPT topological invariants. Further, SPTs can be gauged by summing over all isomorphism classes of flat $G$ gauge fields to obtain Dijkgraaf-Witten topological $G$ gauge theories. These topological gauge theories can be ungauged by first introducing and then proliferating defects that spoil the gauge symmetry. This mechanism is related to anyon condensation in $2+1d$ and condensing bosonic gauge charges in $3+1d$. In the dual boundary approach, we study $1+1d$ and $2+1d$ quantum field theories that have $G$ 't-Hooft anomalies that can be precisely canceled by (the response theory of) the corresponding bulk SPT. We show how to construct/compute topological invariants for the bulk SPTs directly from the boundary theories. Further, we sum over boundary partition functions with different background gauge fields to construct $G$ characters that generate topological data for the bulk topological gauge theory. Finally, we study a $2+1d$ quantum field theory with a mixed ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{T/R}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\text{U}(1)$ anomaly where ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{T/R}$ is time-reversal/reflection symmetry, and the $\text{U}(1)$ could be a 0-form or 1-form symmetry depending on the choice of time reversal/reflection action. We briefly discuss the bulk effective action and topological response for a theory in $3+1d$ that cancels this anomaly. This signals the existence of SPTs in $3+1d$ protected by 0,1-form $\text{U}(1)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{T,R}$.

From orbifolding conformal field theories to gauging topological phases

Xiao Chen, Abhishek Roy, Jeffrey C. Y. Teo +1 more

Topological phases of matter in (2+1) dimensions are commonly equipped with global symmetries, such as electric-magnetic duality in gauge theories and bilayer symmetry in fractional quantum Hall states. Gauging these symmetries into local dynamical ones is one way of obtaining exotic phases from conventional systems. We study this using the bulk-boundary correspondence and applying the orbifold construction to the (1+1)-dimensional edge described by a conformal field theory (CFT). Our procedure puts twisted boundary conditions into the partition function and predicts the fusion, spin, and braiding behavior of anyonic excitations after gauging. We demonstrate this for the electric-magnetic self-dual ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ gauge theory, the twofold symmetric $\text{SU}{(3)}_{1}$, and the ${S}_{3}$-symmetric $\text{SO}{(8)}_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theories.

Topological quasiparticles and the holographic bulk-edge relation in (2+1) -dimensional string-net models

Tian Lan, Xiao-Gang Wen

String-net models allow us to systematically construct and classify (2+1)-dimensional [(2+1)D] topologically ordered states which can have gapped boundaries. We can use a simple ideal string-net wave function, which is described by a set of F-matrices [or more precisely, a unitary fusion category (UFC)], to study all the universal properties of such a topological order. In this paper, we describe a finite computational method, Q-algebra approach, that allows us to compute the non-Abelian statistics of the topological excitations [or more precisely, the unitary modular tensor category (UMTC)], from the string-net wave function (or the UFC). We discuss several examples, including the topological phases described by twisted gauge theory [i.e., twisted quantum double ${D}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}(G)$]. Our result can also be viewed from an angle of holographic bulk-boundary relation. The (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] anomalous topological orders, that can appear as edges of (2+1)D topological states, are classified by UFCs which describe the fusion of quasiparticles in (1+1)D. The (1+1)D anomalous edge topological order uniquely determines the (2+1)D bulk topological order (which are classified by UMTC). Our method allows us to compute this bulk topological order (i.e., the UMTC) from the anomalous edge topological order (i.e., the UFC).

Gauging or extending bulk and boundary conformal field theories: Application to bulk and domain wall problem in topological matter and their descriptions by mock modular covariant

Yoshiki Fukusumi

We formulate the ${Z}_{N}$ group gauging operations (or group extensions) in (smeared) boundary conformal field theories (BCFTs) and bulk conformal field theories, and study their applications to various phenomena in topologically ordered systems. We apply the resultant theories to analyze the correspondence between the renormalization group (RG) flow of CFTs and the classification of topological quantum field theories using the testable information of general classes of partition functions. One can obtain the bulk topological properties of the $2+1$ dimensional topological ordered phase corresponding to the massive RG flow of the $1+1$ dimensional systems equivalent to the smeared BCFT. We present an obstruction to mass condensation for the smeared BCFT analogous to the Lieb-Shultz-Mattis theorem for noninvertible symmetry. Corresponding to the bulk topological degeneracies in $2+1$ dimensions and gapped quantum phases in $1+1$ dimensions, we construct a new series of BCFT. We also study the implications of the massless RG flow of the $1+1$ dimensional CFTs corresponding to the domain wall or coupling problem in $2+1$ dimensional topological orders, which corresponds to the earlier proposal by L. Kong and H. Zheng [Nucl. Phys. B 966, 115384 (2021)] closely related to the integer-spin simple current by Schellekens and Gato-Rivera. We reveal that two distinct kinds of massless RG flow exist, coming from anomaly cancellation and anomaly matching related to Witt equivalence of bulk CFTs. The anomaly cancellation flows produce a new series of modular invariants as coupled models, and the anomaly matching flows produce nontrivial domain walls changing the chirality of anyons. Our paper gives a unified direction for future theoretical and numerical studies of the topological phase based on the established data of classifications of conformal field theories or modular invariants (and the corresponding category theories).

Topological defects of 2+1D systems from line excitations in 3+1D bulk

Wenjie Ji, Xie Chen

The bulk-boundary correspondence of topological phases suggests strong connections between the topological features in a d+1-dimensional bulk and the potentially gapless theory on the (d-1)+1-dimensional boundary. In 2+1D topological phases, a direct correspondence can exist between anyonic excitations in the bulk and the topological point defects/primary fields in the boundary 1+1D conformal field theory. In this paper, we study how line excitations in 3+1D topological phases become line defects in the boundary 2+1D theory using the Topological Holography/Symmetry Topological Field Theory framework. We emphasize the importance of "descendent" line excitations and demonstrate in particular the effect of the Majorana chain defect: it leads to a distinct loop condensed gapped boundary state of the 3+1D fermionic Z2 topological order, and leaves signatures in the 2+1D Majorana-cone critical theory that describes the transition between the two types of loop condensed boundaries. Effects of non-invertible line excitations, such as Cheshire strings, are also discussed in bosonic 3+1D topological phases and the corresponding 2+1D critical points.
