Abstract

A theoretical analysis is performed to explain the nonexponential decay of the macroscopic quantum tunneling of a Bose-Einstein condensate, where it is found that the self-interaction is responsible for the macroscopic decaying behavior.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling of a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Attractive Interaction

Masahito Ueda, Anthony J. Leggett

A Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interaction can be metastable if it is spatially confined and if the number of condensate bosons ${N}_{0}$ is below a certain critical value ${N}_{\mathrm{c}}$. By applying a variational method and the instanton technique to the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional, we find analytically the frequency of the collective excitation and the rate of macroscopic quantum tunneling. We show that near the critical point the tunneling exponent vanishes according to $({1\ensuremath{-}N}_{0}/{N}_{\mathrm{c}}{)}^{5/4}$ and that macroscopic quantum tunneling can be a dominant decay mechanism of the condensate for ${N}_{0}$ very close to ${N}_{\mathrm{c}}$.

A Model for Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling of Bose-Einstein Condensate with Attractive Interaction

Yan Ke-zhu, TAN WEI-HAN

Based on the numerical wave function solutions of neutral atoms with attractive interaction in a harmonic trap, we propose an exactly solvable model for macroscopic quantum tunneling of a Bose condensate with attractive interaction. We calculate the rate of macroscopic quantum tunneling from a metastable condensate state to the collapse state and analyze the stability of the attractive Bose-Einstein condensation.

Tunneling Dynamics of Two—Species Bose—Einstein Condensates

YANGLI-Min, YUZhao-Xian, JIAOZhi-Yong

We have studied the tunneling dynamics of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates. It is shown that the population difference and the Josephson-like tunneling current between the two condensates exhibit oscillation behaviors and there exists macroscopic quantum self-trapping, which strongly depends on the initial state, interatomic nonlinear self-interaction, interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the total number of atoms in the two condensates.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensate with ϕ6 interaction

Yuhua Hao, Beibing Huang

Macroscopic quantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein Condensate in a double-well potential is discussed in the frame of an experimentally realizable Hamiltonian with ϕ 6 interaction under the two-mode approximation. Concentrating on a special case Δ E = Λ = 0, we analyze the stationary states and dynamics of the system to find that such system possesses very small phase spaces for Josephson oscillation and usually lies in the macroscopic quantum self-trapping state (MQST). Importantly we obtain three kinds of MQSTs and in terms of them show the phase diagrams of the system.

Macroscopic quantum self-trapping and atomic tunneling in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

Le‐Man Kuang, Zhongwen Ouyang

We present a theoretical treatment of macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) and quantum coherent atomic tunneling in a zero-temperature two-species Bose-Einstein condensate system in the presence of the nonlinear self-interaction of each species, the interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the Josephson-like tunneling interaction. It is shown that the nonlinear interactions can dramatically affect the MQST and the atomic tunneling, and lead to the collapses and revivals (CR) of the population imbalance between the two condensates. The competing effects between the self-interaction of each species and the interspecies interaction can lead to a quenching of the MQST and a suppression of the CR and the Shapiro-like steps of the atomic tunneling current. It is revealed that interatomic nonlinear interactions can induce coherent atomic tunneling between two condensates even though interspecies Josephson-like tunneling coupling does not exist.
