Proving genuine multiparticle entanglement from separable nearest-neighbor marginals

Abstract

We address the question of whether or not global entanglement of a quantum state can be inferred from local properties. Specifically, we are interested in genuinely multiparticle entangled states whose two-body marginals are all separable, but where the entanglement can be proven using knowledge of a subset of the marginals only. Using an iteration of semidefinite programs we prove that for any possible marginal configuration up to six particles multiqubit states with the desired properties can be found. We then present a method to construct states with the same properties for more particles in higher dimensions.

Multiparticle entanglement as an emergent phenomenon

Genuine multipartite entangled states can be traced from separable marginals by an iterative method based on semidefinite programming. Viewed from another perspective, it is shown that localizable entanglement is not a precondition for genuine multiparticle entanglement.

Nonlocal multipartite correlations from local marginal probabilities

Lars Erik Würflinger, Jean-Daniel Bancal, Antonio Acín +2 more

Understanding what can be inferred about a multiparticle quantum system given only the knowledge of its subparts is a highly nontrivial task. Clearly, if a global system does not contain an information resource of some kind, neither do its subparts. For the case of entanglement as an information resource, it is known that the converse of this last statement is not true: Some nonentangled reduced states are only compatible with global states which are entangled. We extend this result to correlations and provide local marginal correlations that are only compatible with global genuinely tripartite nonlocal correlations. Quantum nonlocality can thus be deduced from the mere observation of local marginal correlations.

Certifying emergent genuine multipartite entanglement with a partially blind witness

Viktor Nordgren, Olga Leskovjanová, Jan Provazník +3 more

Genuine multipartite entanglement underlies correlation experiments corroborating quantum mechanics and it is an expedient empowering many quantum technologies. One of many counterintuitive facets of genuine multipartite entanglement is its ability to exhibit an emergent character. That is, one can infer its presence in some multipartite states merely from a set of its separable marginals. Here we show that the effect can also be found in the context of Gaussian states of bosonic systems. Specifically, we construct examples of multimode Gaussian states carrying genuine multipartite entanglement which can be verified solely from separable nearest-neighbor two-mode marginals. The key tool of our construction is an entanglement witness acting only on some two-mode reductions of the global covariance matrix, which we find by a numerical solution of a semidefinite program. We also propose an experimental scheme for preparation of the simplest three-mode state, which requires interference of three correlatively displaced squeezed beams on two beam splitters. Besides revealing the concept of emergent genuine multipartite entanglement in the Gaussian scenario and bringing it closer to experimentally testable form, our results pave the way to effective diagnostics methods of global properties of multipartite states without complete tomography.

Almost all even-particle pure states are determined by their half-body marginals

Wanchen Zhang, Fei Shi, Xiande Zhang

Abstract Determining whether the original global state is uniquely determined by its local marginals is a prerequisite for some efficient tools for characterizing quantum states. In this paper, we show that almost all generic pure states of even N-particle with equal local dimension are uniquely determined among all pure states (UDP) by four of their half-body marginals. Furthermore, we give a graphical description of the marginals for determining genuinely multipartite entangled states, which leads to several lower bounds on the number of required marginals. Finally, we present a construction of N-qudit states obtained from certain combinatorial structures that cannot be UDP by their k-body marginals for some k ⩾ ⌊ N / 2 ⌋ .

Entanglement marginal problems

Miguel Navascués, F. Baccari, Antonio Acín

We consider the entanglement marginal problem, which consists of deciding whether a number of reduced density matrices are compatible with an overall separable quantum state. To tackle this problem, we propose hierarchies of semidefinite programming relaxations of the set of quantum state marginals admitting a fully separable extension. We connect the completeness of each hierarchy to the resolution of an analog classical marginal problem and thus identify relevant experimental situations where the hierarchies are complete. For finitely many parties on a star configuration or a chain, we find that we can achieve an arbitrarily good approximation to the set of nearest-neighbour marginals of separable states with a time (space) complexity polynomial (linear) on the system size. Our results even extend to infinite systems, such as translation-invariant systems in 1D, as well as higher spatial dimensions with extra symmetries.
